El Capitan Canyon, explore along the California Coast

Along the Central Pacific California coast, near Santa Barbara, you will find El Capitan Canyon. The resort is nestled in the Santa Ynez Mountains, offering endless opportunities for activities and outdoor adventures.

El Capitan Canyon has been a beloved retreat since the 1970s, originally a rustic private campground that’s now transformed into a serene rural glamping escape. Spanning 300 acres just a short walk from El Capitan State Beach, it’s the perfect place for families to unplug, reconnect, and soak up some fresh air. Picture this: evenings spent around a glowing campfire, stargazing under an open sky, and falling asleep to the gentle murmur of a creek winding its way through the canyon. Sounds dreamy, right?

All accommodations at El Capitan Canyon are thoughtfully designed to give you that cozy, camp-like experience while still offering a touch of luxury. Imagine sleeping in a Cedar Cabin or an Adventure Yurt, complete with beautiful willow beds and wood-burning fireplaces to keep you warm and comfortable. From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel a sense of calm wash over you, with quiet creeks babbling nearby and stunning canyon views all around. It’s a little slice of ZEN heaven—and yes, there’s even a llama farm!

    Explore El Capitan Canyon Resort

El Capitan Canyon is just a short walk from El Capitan State Beach, but what really wowed us was the sheer number of activities offered right at the resort. Our first stop? The Market Cafe, where we grabbed fresh, locally brewed coffee and a delicious breakfast. The cafe is conveniently just steps from the cabins, making it the perfect spot to start the day. There’s nothing like sipping a hot cup of coffee while soaking in those gorgeous canyon views—talk about a peaceful morning!

For the kids, the highlight was hands-down the llama farm. They’d been buzzing about it since we arrived, and it did not disappoint. The hike to the farm was about a mile through the canyon, and the journey itself was breathtaking, with stunning views of the Central Coast along the way and glimpses of the ocean from the top.

Once we arrived, the magic really began. The kids got to feed the llamas and even had the unforgettable experience of bottle-feeding a baby lamb. Watching their excitement and connection with the animals was incredible. It was such a unique way to spend the morning, surrounded by natural beauty and a peaceful sense of adventure. A perfect start to our day!

    Hiking trails

El Capitan Canyon truly brings together the best of California’s natural beauty. With views of the Gaviota Coast, the Pacific Ocean, and the Santa Ynez Mountains, this resort is an outdoor adventure family’s dream. The landscape is absolutely stunning, and there’s no shortage of hiking trails to explore right from your doorstep.

One of the highlights is the Selma Rubin Trail, where you can join a docent-led hike to learn more about the area’s unique ecology. The entire resort is surrounded by serene spaces and over 2,500 acres of protected State Park land, offering endless possibilities for exploration. Whether you’re up for a challenging trek or a gentle stroll, there’s a trail for everyone.

For families, the kid-friendly trails are a must-try, especially the hike to the llama and goat farm, which is a big hit with my little ones. Maps and directions are conveniently provided at the resort, so all you have to do is lace up your hiking boots and get out there! We loved this hike!

    Cruising down to the beach

One of the best perks of staying at El Capitan Canyon is the complimentary adult beach cruiser bicycles available to all guests. Naturally, we couldn’t resist hopping on and pedaling our way to the beach! The ride to El Capitan State Beach is quick and easy, either by bike or on foot. It’s a lovely scenic journey that instantly puts you in a beachy, relaxed state of mind. Once we arrived, we spent the afternoon cruising along the shoreline, soaking up the salty breeze and letting the kids explore the beach and the tidepools. It was such a simple yet magical way to connect as a family and enjoy the beauty of the coast.

After our beach adventure, we headed back to the resort. The kids couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated swimming pool. Watching them splash and laugh in the water while we lounged nearby was the perfect way to wind down after an active day. The pool area is thoughtfully designed, offering plenty of space for families to relax and play.

And these are just a few of the incredible activities El Capitan Canyon has to offer. From hiking trails and farm visits to beach rides and poolside fun, there’s no shortage of things to explore. Explore along the coast

The Central Coast is brimming with opportunities for adventure and exploration for families, and we took full advantage during our stay at El Capitan Canyon. Here are some of the highlights from our trip—each one adding its own unique charm to the experience.

    Solvang

Known as “The Danish Capital of America,” Solvang is a must-visit destination just a short drive from the resort. Walking through the quaint streets feels like stepping into a real Danish village. It’s complete with charming architecture, historic windmills, and an unbelievable lineup of European bakeries and boutique shops. We couldn’t resist stopping at several bakeries to sample buttery Danish pastries. They’re famous for Aebleskiver (a fluffy, pancake-like treat that’s as fun to say as it is to eat!). The kids were enchanted by the holiday decorations and had a blast riding the Wooden Street Car and the iconic Solvang Trolley. Whether you’re visiting during the festive season or not, this little village is a delight and absolutely worth the trip.

    Ostrich Land

We made a stop at what is considered a Central Coast landmark, Ostrich Land in Buellton, CA.  This one was a huge hit with the kids! They loved feeding the massive ostriches and watching their funny antics up close. We also got to meet the emus, who were surprisingly friendly and curious. It’s a unique, hands-on experience that’s both entertaining and educational, making it a perfect stop for families.

    Santa Barbara

Just 17 miles from the resort, Santa Barbara offers endless opportunities for exploration. Whether you’re strolling down State Street to shop and dine, exploring the fascinating marine life at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center, or relaxing on the sandy shores of East Beach, there’s something for everyone. The city is full of vibrant culture and natural beauty. Plus, it’s close enough to El Capitan Canyon to make a fun day trip or an evening excursion.

These destinations made our Central Coast getaway even more memorable and offered a little something for everyone in the family. If you’re planning a stay at El Capitan Canyon Resort, make sure to carve out time for a few of these stops—you won’t regret it!

    Evenings at the Canyon

Evenings at El Capitan Canyon are truly something special—dare I say, magical. There’s a sense of calm that settles over the resort as the sun dips behind the canyon walls, and the glow of twinkle lights and fire pits creates the perfect setting to unwind. One of our favorite spots was the Canyon Market sitting area, where families gathered to share stories, roast marshmallows, and enjoy the crisp evening air.

A highlight for us was the BBQ kit from the Canyon Market. We went with the Canyon Diamond Ranch Smoked Baby Back Ribs Kit, which came with a full rack of tender, pre-cooked ribs, tangy BBQ sauce, garlic bread, and a selection of sides. After heating everything up, we feasted by the cozy firepit outside our cabin. There’s just something about good food, firelight, and being surrounded by nature that makes everything taste better. It was one of those moments where we could fully relax and soak in the magic of the outdoors—no distractions, just great food and family time.

    Wine & Tastings

For wine lovers, El Capitan Canyon doesn’t disappoint. The Canyon Market features an impressive selection of wines from the Santa Barbara County wine region, as well as the Santa Rita Hills and Paso Robles—all renowned for their exceptional vintages. I couldn’t resist grabbing a bottle of local pinot noir to pair with our BBQ dinner, and it was the perfect complement to our evening under the stars.

If you happen to visit during the summer or a holiday weekend, don’t miss their Friday night wine tastings. It’s a fantastic opportunity to sample local flavors while mingling with other guests and learning more about the world-class wine scene in the region. Even if wine isn’t your thing, the atmosphere alone is worth experiencing—laid-back, welcoming, and quintessentially California.

    Dining

The Canyon Market Café quickly became one of our favorite stops during our stay. What we loved most was the emphasis on fresh, regional ingredients and made-to-order dishes. From hearty soups and crisp salads to stacked sandwiches and daily specials, every meal felt thoughtful and delicious.

Breakfast was a daily treat for me, especially their Santa Barbara Roasting Company drip coffee. There’s nothing like starting your morning with a steaming cup of expertly brewed coffee while taking in the serene canyon views. Whether you choose to dine in the cozy café or take your meal back to enjoy on your cabin deck, the quality and care in each dish is undeniable. It’s the kind of dining experience that makes you feel connected to the region—simple, fresh, and full of flavor.

    Something for everyone….

One of the most unforgettable parts of our stay at El Capitan Canyon was how beautifully it balanced two seemingly opposite experiences: the peaceful serenity of nature for us grown-ups and endless entertainment for the kids. It’s rare to find a place where everyone in the family feels equally fulfilled, but this canyon retreat nailed it.

For us, the magic was in the simplicity. The lush natural surroundings, the sound of the creek winding through the property, and the warm glow of the firepit in the evenings all made it so easy to unplug and disconnect. There’s something so freeing about being able to set aside the chaos of everyday life and just be present. No deadlines, no notifications—just the rhythm of the canyon and the joy of watching the kids discover new things.

Speaking of the kids, they had the time of their lives! From hiking to the llama farm and feeding the animals to splashing in the heated pool and riding bikes to the beach, they were constantly entertained in the best way possible—by nature itself.  Watching them run free, climb trees, and giggle about feeding a baby lamb reminded us why we love these kinds of trips so much.

What we loved most was how accessible the adventure felt. Every activity encouraged us to get outside and explore without feeling overwhelming. Whether it was a leisurely stroll on the trails or just sitting quietly with a cup of coffee while the kids played nearby, it was the kind of experience that recharges your soul and strengthens family connections. El Capitan Canyon really does have something for everyone, and it’s a place we’ll treasure in our memories for years to come.

    Growing trend of e-bikes

In recent years, there has been an incredible surge in the popularity of electric bikes (also known as e-bikes) and for good reason. These cutting-edge two-wheelers have revolutionized the way we commute, explore, and enjoy the great outdoors. E-bikes combine the efficiency and eco-friendliness of traditional bicycles with the power and convenience of electric motors, creating a thrilling and sustainable mode of transportation.

E-bikes are incredibly eco-friendly, producing zero emissions, and reducing our carbon footprint. By opting for an e-bike instead of a car for short commutes or leisurely rides, we actively contribute to a greener future. Another significant advantage of e-bikes is their versatility. They provide a reliable mode of transportation for both urban commuters and outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re conquering steep hills, zipping through city streets, or exploring scenic trails, an e-bike offers the power and assistance you need, making uphill battles a thing of the past.

    To bike or e-bike?

Let me start by saying that I wasn’t sure if I’d ever become an e-bike kind of girl. I have loved traditional cycling and bike riding all my life!  From biking along the famed Pacific Coast Highway to hitting the trails along historic Revolutionary War battlefields, I approach bike riding as a way to explore plus exercise. And the “exercise” portion of that equation is a big deal to me.

Never fully sold on the cardiovascular benefits of an e-bike, I watched them zoom by and figured they didn’t offer as many health benefits as my traditional bike. However, I’ve been getting more and more interested in e-bikes as I hear friends and family members (and everyone on the internet) rave about them, so when presented with the opportunity to take a Himiway Step-Thru Cruiser for a spin, I was curious and all in!

The Himiway Step Thru Cruiser E-Bike is an impressive blend of style, functionality, and sustainability, designed to elevate your riding experience to new heights. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or someone looking to embark on a thrilling adventure, this e-bike is poised to become your faithful companion on the road less traveled. Not only was I wrong about it not being a great way to exercise, but it was so much fun to ride! I had no idea what I was missing! Here’s my honest review of the Himiway Step-Thru Cruiser e-bike, in all it’s glory!

    Fitness potential of e-bikes

First things first, I was pleasantly surprised by my recent experience with the Himiway Step Thru Cruiser e-bike. Sure, this bike has a powerful motor, but I was delighted to see that I could still pedal to get my exercise, and throttle it when I needed more speed.

E-bikes have often been a subject of debate when it comes to their fitness potential. Skeptics argue that electric assistance diminishes the exercise aspect of cycling, while enthusiasts assert that e-bikes offer unique fitness benefits. In reality, e-bikes can be a fantastic way to get exercise, provided they are used correctly and with the right mindset. Contrary to my preconceived notions about an e-bike, there is a lot of fitness potential, not to mention practical uses, of e-bike riding. Let’s explore the fitness potential of e-bikes and how you can still get a workout while riding one.

    Increased duration and distance

One of the primary advantages of e-bikes is that they extend your riding capabilities. The electric motor assists your pedaling, making it easier to cover longer distances and ride for extended periods of time. By exploring new routes and venturing further, you can engage in low-impact aerobic exercise, improving cardiovascular fitness and endurance.

    Uphill challenges

Hills can be intimidating for many cyclists, especially beginners or those with physical limitations. With an e-bike, climbing uphill becomes more manageable as the electric motor provides a boost. However, it’s important to remember that you can still choose to exert yourself and contribute your own pedaling effort. By actively pedaling while utilizing the electric assistance, you can still engage your leg muscles and reap the benefits of hill climbing.

    Tailored intensity levels

Most e-bikes offer different levels of electric assistance, allowing you to customize the level of exertion required. You can choose a higher assistance level when you want to enjoy a leisurely ride or conserve energy, or opt for a lower assistance level to challenge yourself and engage in more intense exercise. E-bikes provide the flexibility to adapt to your fitness goals and gradually increase the effort as your strength and stamina improve.

    Interval training

Another way to maximize the fitness potential of e-bikes is through interval training. Interval training involves alternating between bursts of high-intensity efforts and recovery periods. With an e-bike, you can push yourself during the high-intensity intervals, utilizing the electric assistance to maintain higher speeds and intensities. This type of training can enhance cardiovascular fitness, improve muscular endurance, and burn calories effectively.

    Cross-training and rehabilitation

E-bikes can be beneficial for individuals recovering from injuries or those looking to engage in cross-training activities. The electric assistance reduces the impact on joints and muscles, allowing for low-impact exercise. E-bikes provide an opportunity to maintain or regain fitness levels while minimizing strain on the body, making them a viable option for rehabilitation or complementing other sports and activities.

    Health benefits of e-biking

Riding an e-bike also offers a range of health benefits, contributing to both physical and mental well-being. E-bike riding is an excellent way to improve cardiovascular fitness. By engaging in regular cycling, even with electric assistance, you can strengthen your heart, lower blood pressure, and enhance blood circulation. The aerobic nature of cycling helps to increase endurance and improve overall cardiovascular health.

Cycling, including e-bike riding, is a low-impact form of exercise that puts minimal stress on the joints. This makes it particularly suitable for individuals with joint pain, arthritis, or those recovering from injuries. E-bikes provide an opportunity to engage in physical activity without putting excessive strain on the knees, hips, or ankles. The pedaling motion involved in e-bike riding helps to promote joint mobility and improve flexibility.

E-bike riding also contributes to mental well-being. Physical exercise releases endorphins, which are known as “feel-good” hormones that help reduce stress, improve mood, and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Cycling outdoors exposes riders to fresh air and natural surroundings, promoting relaxation, mindfulness, and a sense of overall well-being. When it comes to the health benefits of outside fun, soaking up Vitamin D (a.k.a. Vitamin Sunshine!) is tops on that list.

E-bikes are great for motivating reluctant outdoorsy people to get outside for a fun outing whether it’s a trip to the park, farmer’s market or to cruise around and explore where you live. E-bikes also improve your brain health and state of mind. Being outdoors and exercising on a bike boosts endorphins, relieves stress, and reduces cortisol in the body. You know what that means, right? Better sleep! What parent doesn’t want that?

    Himiway Step-Thru Cruiser

Now, let’s focus on the standout features that make the Himiway Step Thru Cruiser e-bike an exceptional choice for parents (or any adult looking for a great e-bike option).

First and foremost, its step-thru frame design ensures easy mount and dismount, catering to riders of all ages and physical abilities. This thoughtful design feature enhances accessibility and comfort, eliminating the need to swing a leg up high over the saddle. The step-thru frame is great for people like me who have shorter legs since it is easier to mount/dismount (short mamas rejoice!). The frame sits higher off the ground than most bikes. The height of the frame also makes it suitable for all types of terrain. Whether you want to ride at the beach, on the trail, over gravel, or on the pavement, this e-bike should be able to traverse all surfaces.

Powered by a robust electric motor, the Himiway Step Thru Cruiser e-bike also delivers impressive performance on all terrains. With its pedal-assist feature, you can effortlessly conquer challenging inclines, extend your riding range, and reach higher speeds with minimal effort. The electric motor seamlessly integrates into your pedaling, providing a smooth and powerful boost when needed.

In terms of durability, this e-bike doesn’t disappoint – it’s sturdy! It boasts a sturdy construction, featuring a high-strength aluminum alloy frame that can withstand the demands of various riding conditions. The Step Thru Cruiser is also equipped with a reliable suspension fork, ensuring a comfortable and controlled ride even on rough or bumpy surfaces.

    Himiway e-bike features & amenities

Fairly easy to assemble, the Himiway Step Thru Cruiser e-bike comes standard with a lot of amenities that might ordinarily be considered an upgrade. Himiway ships their bikes with a wood-paneled rear rack, handlebar bell, front and back plastic fenders, and a comfortable saddle. It also features a simple LCD bike monitor that tracks how fast you’re riding, how far you’ve ridden, and how much charge is left in the battery. All Himiway e-bikes come with a standard 2-year warranty, a 15-day return policy, and free shipping.

The manufacturer also offers additional accessories like bike baskets and rear rack bags to enhance your cargo-carrying capacity. These thoughtful accessories turn a reasonably-priced e-bike into a fully-loaded biking machine. Whether it’s camping equipment, picnic supplies, or sporting gear, e-bikes provide a practical and eco-friendly alternative to transporting items in a car. Parents can effortlessly carry the necessary equipment, ensuring a smooth and well-prepared outdoor experience for the entire family.

    Himiway tires, traction & power

At first glance, you’ll notice that the Himiway tires are thick. These 4-inch wide fat tires will make it possible to ride any terrain, making it a great option for outdoorsy parents that are up for adventures. With these tires and drivetrain, you can toggle between 7 gears and go from no assistance, throttle only, to full pedal assist to achieve maximum speeds on the bike. Speaking of, according to the manufacturer this bike tops out 25 mph! That’s FAST! I have yet to test top speeds as I’m just getting used to the power of this e-cruiser.

Right out of the gate, I could tell that the Himiway Step-Thru Cruiser packs a serious punch. Since it has such a heavy frame I found it to be more user-friendly to start the bike on its first level. The benefit of doing so is that it doesn’t require as much effort to pedal and get going. Even on level 1, as soon as you begin pedaling you’ll feel a slight kick and the bike will begin accelerating. When you stop pedaling, the bike slows to cruising mode until you start pedaling again. It’s easy to have fun cycling on such a smooth ride.

    Battery power and distance

The Himiway Step-Thru Cruiser is a powerful e-bike, with a long-lasting battery. The battery is easy to disassemble and charge. A single charge can last anywhere from 35-60 miles according to the manufacturer. When not in use, it’s important to power down the bike. Not only to save the battery but for safety reasons as well. If the bike is on and you move the pedals, the bike will accelerate and start moving regardless of whether you’re on it, or ready.

    The e-bike learning curve

There’s a bit of a learning curve riding this bike, especially for novice e-bike users. However, with a little practice and familiarity, you’ll quickly adapt to the unique features and characteristics of your e-bike.

The primary difference between a traditional bike and an e-bike lies in the electric assistance provided by the motor. I may take some time to understand the different assistance levels and how they affect your pedaling effort. Experiment with the various settings to find the one that suits your preferences and riding style.

In addition to anticipating the acceleration kick, it’s helpful to keep a two-finger grip on the brakes in anticipation of needing to slow the bike down at a moment’s notice. E-bikes tend to be slightly heavier than traditional bikes due to the additional components such as the motor, battery, and frame reinforcements. It may take a little time to adjust to the increased weight, especially when maneuvering at low speeds or navigating tight spaces. Practice handling the e-bike, turning, and braking in different scenarios to get a feel for its stability and balance.

As with riding any bike, but perhaps even more important on an e-bike, is keeping your eyes up and maintaining a high-level horizon. Even when turning in level 1, the moment you start pedaling the acceleration will kick in and that takes a little getting used to. When starting with an e-bike, it’s important to become accustomed to the power and acceleration it provides. Gradually increase your speed as you gain confidence and ensure that you maintain control and awareness of your surroundings.

Himiway e-bike maintaining a high level horizon

    E-bike? Yes, definitely e-bike!

I have absolutely loved riding the Himiway Cruiser and I am so excited to take it for a spin at the beach (a.k.a my happy place). One of my favorite childhood pastimes is bike riding and I love to share my love for bikes with my son. On our first ride together, he was excited to prove he could keep up with me on the e-bike. Even my husband took it for a spin, the road bike purist that he is, and liked it.

Embarking on e-biking adventures with your family opens up a world of exciting possibilities. I can’t wait to explore new places on the Himiway Step-Thru Cruiser. We not only have plans to take it to the beach, but I’m excited at the possibility of hitting some local trails and greenways, taking on trips to the store and farmer’s market, and using it to explore our city and its cute little neighborhoods. It’s the perfect companion (well, next to family and friends) for fun two-wheeled adventures this summer.

  • Cross Country Skiing with Kids

Cross-country skiing with kids is a great way to get outside in the winter months, explore your area, and get physically active! And it’s easier to get started than you might think! Today, Executive Team member and California mom of three, Araceli Gonzalez, is here sharing her family’s recent experience cross-country skiing for the first time! Araceli’s family took a cross-country skiing lesson with the experts at Wylder Hope Valley and is here passing on all the great tips and advice they received to you!

*This post was sponsored by Wylder Hope Valley. Activities and accommodations were exchanged for review purposes. All opinions expressed and all photos contained herein belong to the author.

    Cross-country skiing with kids

Are you looking for a fun way to get outside, explore, and be active with your kids during the winter months? Looking for an activity that is accessible to beginners and does not require much gear to get started?  Well then, we have a great option for you!

Cross-country skiing with kids is such a great sport to try this winter.  With very little (or no!) experience, this is a great winter outdoor activity for children and a great way for the whole family to explore during the cold winter months together!

    What is cross-country skiing?

Unlike downhill skiing, cross-country skiing involves gliding across relatively flat terrain, relying on your own power and strength to move yourself from point A to B. The classic style of cross-country skiing entails shuffling your legs back and forward (as if you’re running). The more-complex skating method involves moving your legs side to side in an ice skating-like motion.

Cross-country skiing is a sport you can try on your own, as a family, with a friend, or take lessons from a professional instructor.  Most ski resorts offer cross-country ski rentals, coupled with lessons. Cross-country skiing is definitely less daunting than traditional downhill skiing or snowboarding, more affordable, and much more accessible.

Benefits of cross-country skiing for kids

Cross-country skiing is a low-impact sport and an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise. Sliding across snow-covered trails is much more strenuous than it looks! Cross-country skiing works every single muscle you have and helps improve balance, coordination, and agility.

Cross-country skiing is also an activity that’s easy to pick up at any age and can be done together as a family. It’s a great way to get outside and explore together during those cold dark winter months when kids can really benefit from fresh air and physical exercise. The mental benefits of spending time outside also apply, such as a reduction of stress and anxiety.

    Wylder Hope Valley

We had the opportunity to visit a beautiful resort that offers cross-country skiing sessions, along with many other family-friendly winter activities.  We love to discover destinations where access to adventure is easy for the entire family. Let me introduce you to Wylder Hope Valley; it is an all-season resort tucked away in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Alpine County, California, right in the middle of Hope Valley.

Alpine County (and Hope Valley), is only a 20-minute drive from South Lake Tahoe, but it feels like you’re in another world. This majestic area will take your breath away. Located on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevadas, northeast of Carson Pass, Alpine County is California’s least populous county. The US government owns 96% of Alpine County, the highest percentage in the state, including 3 national forests: Eldorado, Stanislaus, and Humboldt–Toiyabe. And because of its sparse population, Hope Valley is one of the best places in all of California to stargaze!

Located along the banks of West Carson Fork River and nestled in a grove of aspen trees, Wylder Hope Valley offers a variety of lodging options, such as cabins, traditional campsites, RVs, and custom yurts. Most of the adorable cabins were brought in from around the world, themed, and impeccably outfitted.

Cross-country skiing with kids at Wylder Hope Valley

Wylder Hope Valley offers wonderful activities for the whole family all year long! Enjoy fly fishing, wildflower hikes, and mountain biking during the spring and summer months.  Hope Valley is a popular destination in the fall for its picturesque autumn colors and aspen groves.  You can explore the area’s gorgeous trails and fall colors, taking in views of all the beautiful aspen trees and fall foliage.

In the winter, the area turns into a literal Winter Wonderland! You will find amazing views and snow-capped mountains, wide-open valleys, and pristine rivers. During the winter months, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular activities.

We took advantage of all the snow we’ve gotten and decided to give cross-country skiing a try! We booked a lesson through Wylder to learn the basics, which we’re now passing on to you! Joyce and Todd manage the ski shop and have over 30 years of experience skiing and teaching. Joyce set us up with the equipment we needed, and we were on our way!

Todd & Joyce Coker – Wylder Hope Valley Ski Shop

What you need to cross-country ski with kids

You will need the following gear and equipment to cross-country ski:

    • Skis – two styles, classic or skate (see below)
    • Boots – must be compatible with your skis
    • Poles – it is important that they are sized correctly
    • Base layer – made for snow conditions
    • Snow jacket and pants
    • Warm socks
    • Waterproof gloves – when skiing with kids, warm hands and feet are of most importance
    • Eye protection (sunglasses/ski goggles) – really important even on cloudy days

There are two styles of cross-country skis, classic and skating. We opted for classic skis, these are usually made for trails that are already groomed, and you move them in a similar motion like walking or running.  Skate skis are made to move faster and at higher speeds.

    Dress for the weather

It is important to dress in layers that you can remove as you move through your session.  It’s very cold when you’re just getting started, but by the middle of the session, our kids were ready to strip down to their base layers.  It is quite a workout, and you will work up a sweat! We highly recommend a good merino wool base layer because it’s naturally breathable and can absorb large quantities of moisture (so you don’t feel wet and cold).

When it’s cold outside, your child’s head, ears, hands, and feet are most prone to cold exposure. Extremely cold weather can cause two potentially serious conditions: hypothermia and frostbite. To ensure they stay toasty and warm, make sure you have heavy socks, waterproof boots, waterproof gloves, a scarf, and hat, and/or ear muffs on hand depending on changes in weather. For older children and toddlers, gloves are needed when the weather is 40°F or lower.

Additional items to pack for cross-country skiing

Here are a few extra things to consider bringing with you when skiing with littles.  We brought along a backpack and carried a few extra items that came in handy during our session.

    • Snacks
    • Sunscreen – even on cloudy days
    • Hand and feet warmers
    • Water
    • Phone
    • Extra change of clothes – which you can leave in the car to change into afterward

    Cross-country skiing basics

Todd, our amazing instructor, was super patient with us and gave the kids plenty of time to play in a flat area to familiarize themselves with their skis before we got started. We then moved right into the lesson and started working on the basics of cross-country skiing.

We started by learning how to put on the skis and move around on skis, making our way around a flat area. The kids practiced shuffling around and walking back and forth to get a feel for how the skis move. Similar to downhill skiing, balance is very important when cross-country skiing.  We learned how to shift and move our weight correctly so that we could move in the direction we wanted and use our weight to our advantage.

Next, we learned how to use our poles. Our poles were strap-wrapped around our wrists correctly to avoid getting tangled up or lost. If you have little kids (under age 8), you might even start them out without poles. Sometimes poles just get in the way for younger kids who are just learning how to balance and move around.

Finally, we learned how to fall (and get back up again). Practicing this makes falling into less of a fail and more of a game.

    Hitting the cross-country trails

Once we had the basics down, we set out along some groomed trails.  The kids got the hang of it pretty quickly.  The most challenging part was getting up after a fall, but after a few times, they mastered the skill.  They made their way through pretty deep snow-covered trails.  It was definitely a workout, and by the end of our adventure, they were completely exhausted! (I call that a win!)

There was an incredible amount of snow on the ground due to recent storms, so it was pretty difficult to move through so much fresh snow. However, we managed to learn the basics and still had so much fun. We didn’t even mind the cold weather.  The mountains, the fresh air, and something about being out in the middle of this valley made this such a memorable experience. We can’t wait to come back again and put our new skills to good use!

    Cross-country skiing safety

When you’re heading out into the elements with kids, it’s really important to take weather and snow conditions into consideration. Check weather information ahead of your trip and continue to do so the day of. Selecting the right area for skiing is key.

Choose an area that matches your skill and comfort level.  Staying on groomed trails is a much safer option; only experienced skiers should venture out into backcountry trails where the risk of going off trail is higher.  As a beginner, it is important to stick to areas that are marked and closely monitored.  While it is a pretty low-risk sport, and almost everyone can enjoy it, it is important to know our limitations.

Ultraviolet radiation is something to consider and, therefore, it’s super important to wear eye protection and sunscreen.

Last, consider animal safety and familiarize yourself with the area and carry appropriate safety items such as bear spray.

    After skiing fun at Wylder

After a full day of adventure, we went back to our cabin at Wylder to relax and unwind.  Whether you are looking for a cozy rustic log cabin, a camping weekend, or a glamping experience, you will find it at Wylder! We enjoyed the most amazing dinner onsite at Sorenson’s Cafe, which offers seasonal home-cooked meals all year long. Their homemade tomato soup hit the spot after a cold day out!  We picked up a cherry pie from the General Store (right by the Ski Shop) and enjoyed it by a cozy fire back at our cabin.

Like so many families, we are constantly seeking out wild destinations where adventure is easily accessible.  We love places where it is easy to get outside, create memories and disconnect in nature; Wylder Hope Valley offers that and so much more. We have now added a new activity to our skill set and look forward to returning to Hope Valley to put our new skills to use!

    Kayaking with kids

If kayaking with your kids is something you’d like to try, we’re here to help! Getting your kids interested in kayaking is probably easier than you think. Kids love being on the water, and kayaking is a really fun way to explore your local waterways. Start talking to your kids about your paddling adventures, the wildlife and nature they’ll see on their trip, and how you can’t wait to spend this time with them. You can also encourage them by letting them try sitting in a kayak at home or at a sporting goods store, or enroll them in a kayaking class if they’re old enough.

Once they’re interested, start planning your kayaking trip together so that your child feels involved at every step of the journey. Suggest some of their favorite local lakes, ponds, or bay to get started. Or, choose a familiar route that you know will be interesting for them and keep their attention. Or consider letting them invite a friend if you have a second adult available to help supervise. The main thing is that they have fun, so make that the purpose of your trip.

    Benefits of kayaking for kids

Kayaking is a highly popular water-based activity, but it also provides kids with a host of different benefits. Here are a few benefits of kayaking for kids that we really appreciate:

    • Nature appreciation – Kayaking can be a superb way to help foster a love and appreciation for nature and the world around them. From a kayak, your child will be able to see things in and on the water that they’d never see from land. This can awaken their sense of curiosity about ecology, wildlife, and the environment.

    • Unique vantage point – There’s nothing better than seeing birds and animals from a close vantage point, and kayaking can be a great way to achieve this. It can allow your kid to explore areas that they wouldn’t be able to reach on foot, which gives them a whole new perspective on and appreciation of the world around them.

    • Teaches cooperation and determination – In order to successfully complete a kayak trip, everyone needs to work together. This will help your child learn how important it is for everyone to cooperate in order to achieve a common goal. Kayaking can be a challenging activity, especially for beginners. It takes time, effort and practice to master the art and learn a new skill. This can be an excellent lesson for kids, that with hard work and dedication, they can achieve anything they set their mind to.

    • Water safety – When kayaking, kids learn to act responsibly while on the water in order to protect themselves and others around them. They must be good listeners and follow the rules. They learn to appreciate water and weather conditions, evaluate their skill levels, and be safe around water.

Best age to start kayaking with kids

Kayaking is one of our family’s favorite water sports. And one of the great things about kayaking is that you can start kayaking with kids from an early age. The age at which you start kayaking with your kids will depend on the child’s maturity level, swimming skills, and physical ability, as well as your own kayaking skill and experience.

Kids as young as 2 or 3 can kayak with a grown-up by sitting in the center of a tandem kayak (called “duffing”). However, this is only recommended if you have some kayaking experience, your child can sit still for the length of your kayaking adventure and can float on their own face-up when wearing a personal-floatation device. This is a great option for smaller kids and toddlers to get them started.

Around age 5, kids can sit in the front seat of a double kayak and help paddle. This is also the age when younger children can consider getting a solo kayak that’s the right size for them.

safety tips for kayaking with kids

When can a child paddle their own kayak?

Kids can start practicing their kayaking skills in a single child-sized kayak on calm water as young as four years old. At this age, practice will primarily involve holding the paddle, practicing moving it around, and paddling for a few minutes. In calm waters, young children can manage very short distances in a small kayak. There should always be a skilled adult close by, and small children should wear a PFD and be able to swim.

By the age of seven, most kids will be able to paddle their own kid-sized kayak independently. By this age, most kids have a longer attention span and the physical strength needed to kayak continuously for half a mile to a mile (this means younger paddlers should be able to paddle between a half an hour to an hour).

how to teach your kids how to kayak

Safety tips for kayaking with kids

    1. Personal floatation devices

All children under 13 years of age are required to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable life vest or personal flotation device (PFD) when on a boat. There are different size requirements for children of different weights. Infant-size PFDs fit children who are 8-30 lbs. and have a neck pad and a crotch strap.  Child-size PFDs fit kids 30-50 lbs. Youth PFDs fit kids that are 50-90 lbs.

Check out this post for more information on PFDs, size and weight limits, and our recommendations for the best life jackets for kids

    2. Choose the right location to kayak

Another important safety consideration when kayaking with kids is choosing your destination. Locations with high currents, waves, or heavy boat traffic can easily become scary and overwhelming for kids. When starting kayaking with young kids, we highly recommend starting in calm open waters that are clear, no waves or wind, and are less trafficked by larger boats. The first time your kids kayak should be a safe and fun (and relatively short) outing.

    3. Master a few skills

It’s highly recommended that your kids know how to swim before you start kayaking with kids. Even with a personal floatation device, knowing how to get in and out of your kayak and what to do in case of tipping over or getting stuck is important. Before you go, make sure to practice wet-exits, braces, and other safety techniques. REI has some great posts on these topics: How to Do a Wet Exit from a Kayak (for sit-in kayaks) and How to Edge and Do a Brace Stroke in Your Kayak. The best way to be prepared is to practice.

    evrwild kayaks for kids

    4. Smaller paddle

The paddle is your connection with the water, so be sure to get your child a paddle that is the right size and comfortable. Kayak paddles come in various sizes for children. You’ll want one that is shorter and lighter than adult-sized kayaking paddles. The perfect paddle length for your child will depend on their height and the kayak’s width. But usually, child-specific paddles will be shorter, lighter, and with smaller blades than regular paddles. Consider paddles that are about 200 cm long with a narrow shaft. Kids can tire easily and will have more trouble managing a large paddle that’s large and unruly for them. The right paddle could make the difference between a pleasant trip and a frustrating (and exhausting) one.

    5. Know before you go

Water and weather conditions are important when deciding where to kayak with kids. Make sure you do your research on the place where you’ll be kayaking with kids. Study tides, currents, and boat traffic with the kids ahead of time so you know what to expect (and when). Be sure to check the weather forecast ahead of your trip so that you know what to expect (and then check again on the day of your kayaking excursion).

    best kid-sized kayak

    6. Never strap a child into a kayak

Never ever strap your child into a kayak. Although you may think this is a good idea for wiggly children, it’s extremely dangerous if you capsize.

    7. Set the rules

Safety rules are essential when spending time on the water with kids. Before you ever get into the water, let your kids know the rules and what the consequences will be if they do not follow them. Kayaking rules may be different when on a small pond, as opposed to going down a river with current. Make sure your child knows how far from you they can go and any rules about stopping along the way. Depending on your kayaking location, other rules could include the following:

    • Life jackets are to be worn at all times.
    • No standing on the kayaks.
    • No fooling around, leaning, or reaching out of the kayak.
    • No jumping in and out of the kayak without permission.
    • Paddles are not toys and should only be used for paddling, not as a play pretend sword or fighting staff.

child sized kayaks - evrwild kayakbest kids' kayak on the market - amazon evrwild kayaks

    8. Have a plan

Create a float plan each time you go paddling, and inform a friend or family member where you’re going and when to expect you back. Go over emergency situations with the other adults (and older children) so that you know who’s in charge of what if a situation should arise. Your plan should include what to do if a boat tips over (capsizes), someone gets hurt, falls out of their boat, or gets separated from the fleet. Procedures should be established and understood by each adult for each of these situations.

    8. Maintain your ratio

You should always aim to have one adult for every child in your kayaking group until you’re confident in all paddlers’ skills and experience, including kids. Beginner paddlers should never take kids on the water without an experienced kayaker to accompany them.

Best places to kayak with kids

Unless you are a very experienced kayaker, you will generally want to find calm water and minimal current to start kayaking with kids. The best places to go kayaking with kids have little to no current and lots of things to do and see.

Small protected lakes, bays, and slow rivers or streams are a great place to start kayaking with kids in order to develop your child’s paddling and navigation skills. Places with different landscapes, wildlife, bridges, tunnels, and other features are fun and motivating for kids to kayak through.  Shallow waters also make kayaking stress free and fun. One-way downstream paddling is fun for kids at this age because it requires little strength (not a lot of paddling) and is a lot of fun.

To find kid-friendly paddling destinations, talk to experienced paddlers or paddling experts at your local outdoor shop. You might also try your county or state parks service websites or a local conservation agent. Local parenting Facebook groups or outdoor adventure clubs are also great resources and can provide lots of options for safe kayaking locations.

How to choose a kayak for kids

Once your child has mastered the basic paddle strokes and safety techniques and has the maturity to paddle solo, you might want to consider getting them a child-sized kayak of their own. Adult kayaks are built for adults and are not always the best option for kids (even larger kids). Kayaks designed specifically for kids will help your child learn to be a confident kayaker and last for years.

There are two main different types of kayaks – sit-on kayaks and sit-in kayaks. Sit-on-top kayaks are probably the easiest kayak to start with kids and the best choice for warm water kayaking. These types of kayaks offer a variety of positions for kids to sit in, which helps them get comfortable and stay in the kayak longer.

Sit-on kayaks (as opposed to a sit-in kayak) also tend to be more stable, difficult to capsize, and nearly impossible to sink because they have built-in drainage holes. Kids often prefer sit-on-top kayaks because they’re less restricting. They’re also easier to enter and exit, meaning that your kid can go for a swim and climb back on. And, if they flip over, the water drains out easily and quickly.

When choosing a kayak for kids, you’ll also want to consider the size and weight of the kayak. Buying a kayak is an investment, so you want one that’s easy to transport (so you’ll actually use it) and can be used for years as your child grows. Other things to consider (and great features to have) are storage options, ergonomic features, durability, carry handles, and material.

Best kayak for kids: Evrwild Kayak

Started by a mom and dad during the pandemic, Evrwild Kayaks are the best youth kayak and child-sized option for kids. The Evrwild Water Bear Youth Kayak is specifically designed for kids ages 4-12. And it’s not just a scaled-down version of an adult-sized kayak.

Evrwild kayaks are ergonomically designed with everything a child needs while out on the water. Footrests that fit a kid, a cup holder within easy reach, and places to store special finds and gear that kids love. On top of that, the Evrwild kayak is a sit-on-top kayak that’s built to the highest standards of quality and durability, ensuring many years of adventure.

The wide stance provides a stable paddling platform to keep your child safely in the kayak. The Evrwild kayak has a padded slip-resistant seat, swim-up deck (for easy re-entry), paddle rest, and stable hull design with great maneuverability and steady tracking.

We absolutely LOVE our Evrwild kayaks. They are easy enough for my 4-year-old to maneuver, but large and sturdy enough for the 10-year-old to use as a fishing kayak. The swim-up step comes in very handy when kids are in and out of the water.

The Evrwild kayaks come in two colors – blue and purple. It’s made in the USA and comes with a 5-year limited warranty. We think it’s the best kids kayak on the market.

  • Letters to the Earth: A Photography Challenge

** This photography challenge is sponsored by and in collaboration with Vivobarefoot Kids. **

Letters to the Earth is a global campaign to raise awareness about climate change. We want to help bring your messages to life and share them with people around the world. We’re co-hosting a photography challenge with Vivobarefoot Kids to raise awareness for the Letters to the Earth campaign, as well as the climate crisis in general. All the info you need to be a part of this is below. We hope you’ll join us!

Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.”

    Khalil Gibran

How the Letters to the Earth campaign began

In the early spring of 2019, a small group of women came together around a kitchen table to talk about the increasingly dire news of climate and ecological collapse. They were inspired to bring that news to the forefront of the public conversation and get people thinking and talking about the state of our planet.

In collaboration with Culture Declares Emergency, the British public was invited to put pen to paper and write a creative response to our planet regarding climate change. The invitation was open to interpretation and open to all. Within a month, thousands of letters poured in from all over the world – from 4-year-olds to great grandparents, artists, scientists, nurses. The Letters to the Earth campaign took off!

Now in 2021, Letters to the Earth continues to be a huge success, thanks to the efforts of the coordinators and the support of Climate 2025, a small team of educators, creatives, and publicists, and people like YOU with a voice and a passion for change.

    The power of a letter

Writing a letter to the Earth can be a simple and powerful way to deepen our connection with the natural world and the people we are sharing it with. Writing a letter is an opportunity to bring out all your fears, your frustrations, and your love, to process what is happening to the world, and to create something new and beautiful and powerful.

A letter can express your hopes or fears for the future.  What future do you want for your children? What do you want to say to the government policymakers about their decisions for the Earth? How can you thank the Earth?  What is your love letter to the Earth?

The letters that came in were powerful. They were beautiful and haunting, inspiring and heart-breaking. They expressed love, anger, gratitude, humor, awe, despair, and hope. And most importantly, they all send the message that it’s time for change.

    How the Letters are used

In 2019, batches of Letters to the Earth were sent to over 50 venues and community spaces worldwide. They organized their own readings on a day of joint action. Some venues opened their doors free of charge to the public, others live-streamed and others took to the streets to read the letters aloud. High-profile readers alongside young people and local communities were involved in the presentation of these letters.

Musicians such as Yoko Ono, journalists such as Rebecca Solnit, and poets such as Kae Tempest contributed their words. Actors such as Andrew Scott, Paapa Essiedu, Alex Lawther, and Emma Thompson read letters at live events and on camera.

The campaign facilitated hundreds of cultural organizations and artists to Declare Climate & Ecological Emergency as part of Culture Declares Emergency; the first sector to ‘Declare’ globally.

This November at the next UN Climate Summit, decisions will be made that will determine the rest of our lives and the lives of generations to come. Now is the time to act to let our world leaders know that we need an answer to climate change and action now.

A select number of Letters to the Earth will be read at the Summit to showcase a diversity of voices and experiences so as to raise awareness of the climate and ecological emergency and stimulate the will to act.

    A letter in photo form

This year, we want to encourage and inspire you to take action and write your own letter to the Earth. A letter to the Earth can be written to or from anything – another species, a person, or a moment in time. It could be the Earth, the future, a person in a position of power, the sea, or an animal. You can submit your letters to  http://www.letterstotheearth.com and add your voice to the campaign

And it doesn’t have to be a physical letter…how about a photo?

The Run Wild My Child community is filled with photographers, artists, storytellers, musicians, and creatives. We want to see (and share) your IMAGES inspired by this campaign. We hope that your photos will serve as a visual way to inspire others to write letters.

If a pen is mightier than the sword and if a picture is worth 1,000 words, just think of how powerful your image will be.

Together we can encourage even more participants to write their own letter and tell their story.

Vista Verde is a gorgeous luxury cowboy dude ranch nestled in the Colorado Rockies, just north of Steamboat Springs.  It backs up into a national forest and feels as if they carved out space for this gorgeous ranch, making it the most pristine location.

From the minute you arrive, you will be blown away by gorgeous views of the Rocky Mountains and struck by the beauty of 100+ horses roaming throughout the property.  Cozy log cabins are scattered throughout the property, offering rustic charm and the feeling of alpine luxury comfort. I loved the wood-burning fireplace, spa robes, and local handmade soap. There were so many thoughtful details and amenities, which created a cozy and restful experience, even with vacationing with kids! We all know that a vacation with kids can be nearly anything but relaxing, so I was very impressed with how easy they made everything for us.

Vista Verde has something for everyone

Vista Verde makes it easy to vacation as a family.  They really do have something for everyone, which makes it perfect for large families with lots of different ages and interests! With a large family, it’s sometimes tough to find activities that we all like, so the more options, the better. The kids’ program is designed for children 6 years and older and you can choose to do activities as a family or break apart for part of the day to give each family member the chance to do what they want to do.  We were so impressed with the attention to detail and careful planning that goes into making sure every family has a memorable experience.

    A winter dream come true

While Vista Verde Ranch is a spectacular place to visit any time of year, we found it to be especially MAGICAL in the winter.  We arrived on a snowy day and truly felt as if we stepped out into a winter wonderland.  As soon as we arrived we were greeted by a staff member who checked in with us every morning to ensure our day was planned for maximum adventuring.  They answered all our questions with patience, attended to our needs and requests, and made the whole experience easy for us. After a day of adventures, it was amazing to go back to our cabin and warm up by the cozy wood-burning fireplace.

In the winter you can select from a wide range of activities such as skiing, ice fishing, massages, sleigh rides, snow tubing, snowmobiling, winter trail rides, yoga and so much more! The best part is that almost all activities were included as part of our all-inclusive experience! Amazing!

The ranch is also an amazing place to rest and disconnect.  We enjoyed board games around the fire and truly enjoyed disconnecting as a family. I already know that the conversations we had as a family will be some of my favorites for years to come!all-inclusive dude ranch for the family - colorado

    The Vista Verde horses

Vista Verde is a traditional dude ranch and home to over 100 beautiful horses.  Horseback riding through snow-covered trails was pure magic and an experience our family will treasure forever.  My kids described it as a scene from “Frozen”.  One of the activities offered through the kids’ program is a sleigh ride to feed the horses.

It was an unbelievable experience to ride through the horse ranch as 100 horses gathered for their nightly feed.  They were the most gentle and beautiful horses.  The work and love that goes into caring for this beautiful herd is evident and it makes for a wonderful experience. We loved waking up and greeting the horses each day on our way to breakfast in the mornings. It was a pretty special experience.

    So many activities!

Vista Verde had such a diverse program of activities! This is what sets Vista Verde apart from other ranches anywhere around. A carefully planned and wonderfully curated adventure program that is part of an all-inclusive experience is a dream come true for busy parents that are excited to get away, but don’t want to deal with the hassle of making all the arrangements for days upon days of activities.  The attention to detail and thoughtful planning really made our stay special.

We opted for a family trail ride, ice fishing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and tubing as part of our stay.  But there are so many fabulous winter activities led by the friendliest guides, it was really hard to narrow it down and choose.  All the staff made us feel like part of the family and did the best job of taking amazing care of us.

    Ice fishing adventures

For our ice fishing excursion, our guide drove us out to a local lake.  We walked across the frozen lake and set up for an afternoon of ice fishing.  The staff was all so knowledgeable and excited to share their passion for the outdoors with all their guests.

    Sledding and snowmobiling

We also had the best time tubing down a magnificent mountain!  We were so surprised (and delighted) to be greeted by our guide in a snowmobile! He took us up the mountain and got us all set up for our trip down in our tubes. We went tubing all the way down and at the end of the run, we were taken back up to the top after every run in a snowmobile!  How cool is that! All the fun and way less work! This is perfect for kids that love action and adventure!

    A divine culinary experience

And if you think the activities look great, wait until I tell you about the food! Food is a celebration at Vista Verde Ranch!  The local chefs and staff made our experience so enjoyable! Every morning we woke up excited to head down to the guest house to enjoy our meals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were each better than the next.

The kids loved ordering a hot hearty breakfast, pancakes to their liking with extra blueberries, homemade bread, avocado toast and so much more.  Lunch was always a delight with amazing hot soups and crisp salads. We often had homemade dessert with lunch!  The dinners were amazing.  We even had the opportunity to enjoy a three-course meal on our own (just us parents!) while the kids enjoyed entertainment and dinner in the play center. That’s nearly unheard of when traveling as a family.

My husband and I enjoyed happy hour nightly, followed by a formal dinner complete with a delicious gourmet meal of scallops and short ribs.  These multi-course meals varied from casual to formal themes and they were all amazing! We celebrated with dessert every single night! We’ve never felt so spoiled!

    Sunriver Resort in Bend, Oregon

If you are looking for sunshine 300 days out of the year, Sunriver, Oregon is waiting for you! This region of the PNW experiences a warm-summer Mediterranean climate and lots of sunshine year-round. In Sunriver, you will find a little gem known as Sunriver Resort. Sunriver is located about 15 miles south of Bend, Oregon right at the foot of the Cascade Mountains.  The Deschutes River (a major tributary of the Columbia River) runs right through this beautiful resort and alongside the bike trails and golf courses.

If you’re looking for a fun getaway with plenty of adventure right at your doorstep, Sunriver Resort has so much to keep the entire family entertained, occupied and having fun outside. We spent a few glorious end of summer days enjoying this beautiful resort and absolutely loved every minute.  I’m so excited to share our experience with you and encourage you to consider adding Sunriver Resort to your “must-see” list as soon as you can. This place is a true gem.  My family and I will definitely be back. Sunriver may just be our new summer tradition.

    Outdoor adventures at Sunriver Resort

The best way to get around Sunriver Resort is on a bicycle.  Bike to grab your morning coffee, go shopping at the village square, dine at beautiful restaurants, all while filling your day with outdoor adventure and exercise.  Every activity is within biking distance. If you don’t want to bring your own bikes, the Bike Barn has over 300 bikes ready to ride! Bikes are available first-come, first-serve and rentals include a helmet, lock and bike map.

Biking is definitely the most popular outdoor activity in the area and something this resort is known for. The bike trails are extensive, impressive and exquisite! Ride alongside the Deschutes River or through the forest on over 40 miles of paved bike paths and some of the best mountain biking trails in Oregon.

    Horseback riding at Sunriver

One of the highlights during our stay was our visit to Sunriver Trail Rides. It is a magnificent Horse Ranch with over 54 beautiful horses. Sunriver offers guided trail rides  in the spring, summer and fall for all experience levels, as well as pony rides for kids ages 2-6. If you need a lesson or refresher course, they also offer horseback riding lessons for those that want to polish up their riding skills.

We spent the day riding along the river and across stunning meadows.  My youngest enjoyed a pony ride while the rest of us set out on “The Great Meadow Experience.”  We saw coyote, deer, and other wildlife roaming through these serene meadows, which was just spectacular!

Also, this is a great place to meet genuine real-life cowboys! How about that? If you do the ride, you will get to experience a trail ride led by a real-life cowboy who will not only teach you, but entertain you with incredible stories and tales of cowboy life.  These two had so much to talk about as we galloped down the meadow.

We also made friends with the most amazing horses.  My children absolutely fell in love with these gentle animals and within minutes, they were the best of friends.

We spent the entire day horseback riding and getting to know these beautiful creatures. I love adventures where we can slow down and really take it all in. This adventure was one that I will always remember for it’s calm and soothing experience. The entire day felt relaxed, un-rushed, fun and grounding. It was such a great way to spend our last days of summer.

Deschutes River float trips at Sunriver Resort

The next day, we set out on a water adventure down the Deschutes River.  A quick bike ride from the resort and we explored a 6 mile stretch of the Deschutes River. This is such a great way to see the beauty of this entire area.  You can float, kayak, or paddle down the river on a raft, canoe, kayak or paddleboard. All rentals are available at the Sunriver Marina and include life jackets, paddles and a shuttle ride back to the marina at the end of the float.

We rented canoes and slowly made our way down the river. This felt just like a real-life lazy river, only better! The scenery was incredible, the company was fantastic and the weather was perfect. We stopped for snacks along the way and enjoyed a slow morning cruising down the river. We had so much fun floating down this picturesque river while lazy ducks moved right along with us!

And last, no trip to Sunriver Resort would be complete without a trip to the pool! The Cove pool is the resort’s outdoor pool and is zero-entry (great for little ones). It also has a hot tub, private cabanas, a waterslide, nature walk and discovery area, a poolside restaurant, lakeside trails, and a spacious deck and lawn. My kids absolutely LOVED the rock slide.  The pool offers gorgeous mountain views and was such a serene experience.

    Adventures for everyone

Sunriver Resort is the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation for the whole family.  The adults had just as much fun as the kids and we all got to do something (multiple things, actually) we loved. Our days were filled with so much adventure and we never had to leave the resort.  The location is inviting and offers so much fun for the entire family and we are already making our list of what we’ll do when we come back.  Because, we will definitely be back!

  • Making a Difference with Vivobarefoot Kids

We humans have been pretty terrible to the planet we live on and the animals that inhabit it. Just since 1970, human activity has destroyed 60% of all the world’s animals. There are now over 16,000 endangered species threatened with extinction. Scientists estimate that 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird, and mammal become extinct EVERY 24 HOURS. Insect populations are declining at a rate that could be “catastrophic” for our ecosystems within two generations. Scientists are describing what’s happening to animal life on earth as “biological annihilation.” Something has to change. And that change starts right here, with us! We are making a difference, one kid at a time!

making a difference - ways kids can help take care of our planet

    Here come the wild ones

Last month we had the honor of teaming up with one of our all-time favorite outdoor kid’s shoe brands – Vivobarefoot Kids – to host a hashtag campaign to raise awareness for our planet and its animals. VivoKids recently launched a new line of eco-friendly kids shoes inspired by endangered species. These “Wild” shoes have minimal impact on the environment and are made with cleaner, greener materials. For example, the Ultra Blooms are made from algae blooms and each pair returns 25 liters of clean water and reduces 6 balloons worth of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

A portion of the profits from the sale of these shoes go directly to The Aspinall Foundation, a British charity that works to promote wildlife conservation through education, captive breeding programmes and, crucially, by reintroducing endangered species into the wild wherever possible. Over the last few years, the Aspinall Foundation has successfully reintroduced a range of animals (including 8 black rhino, 49 Javan Langurs, 9 Javans gibbons, 11 European bison and over 60 western lowland gorillas) back into the wild in their natural habitat.

    #wildkids4wildlife campaign for endangered species

    #wildkids4wildlife

In connection with this amazing collaboration, we became inspired to encourage kids (and their parents!) to learn more about the animals in whose footprints they are walking and to take action to help our planet. We believe the more kids know about the environment and wildlife, the more ingrained it will be in them to care for it and act accordingly as they grow.

During the month of March, we ran a hashtag campaign on Instagram with VivoKids and our favorite hub @wildandbravelittles. We encouraged kids (and parents) to take action with a good deed for the earth and tag us! Our #wildkids4wildlife campaign was born and it was absolutely amazing! Throughout the month we featured these tagged images and were blown away with the incredible response and feedback we received.

    vivokids eco-friendly shoes for kids

Be the change you want to see

We saw kids doing all kinds of good deeds, from picking up litter to planting a tree. From gardening and composting, to recycling and attending rallies on climate change. Some kids made donations to their local wildlife rehabilitation centers, stopped their use of single-serve plastics and wrote letters to their congressional reps about changes that could be made to protect our earth. We saw kids reading books about endangered animals, visiting their local zoo and learning about them and making a commitment to help. It was inspiring! We hope this will be the starting point for a lifetime of conversations, actions and changes so that we can all be kinder to our planet.

With VivoKids’ help, we chose three “winners” from the tagged images. Each of these winners received shoes for their kids from Vivobarefoot. Their images were not only inspiring but told a beautiful story about the compassion and power of kids. We asked the winners a few questions about their images and the story behind them. Their answers are below.

no one is too small to make a difference@amys.place

NSW, Australia, on the Coffs Coast
    4 children; Lara (10), Dylan (7), Freya (5) and Ciara (3)

    The story behind the image

On 15 March 2019, I accompanied my eldest daughter to a local student strike against climate change, which was a globally organized event inspired by Greta Thunberg, a Swedish student who began striking each Friday in August 2018. Greta has been a source of inspiration for my daughter, who is an aspiring biologist and who cares deeply for our planet. On 15 March, Lara woke early and set to work on her sign. Her message was clear, and indeed helped set the theme for the day, that no one is too small to make a difference.

How do you teach/inspire your kids to help protect our planet?

My husband is an environmental scientist and I have a legal background. Both he and I have raised our children with an awareness that our planet cannot be exploited and taken for granted as it has in the past. On a household level, we make efforts to reduce our waste and produce our own food when possible. We use solar energy at home and we collect rubbish from waterways, parks, bushlands, and beaches. Our children all know and recite the phrase “take three for the sea,” (though we often end up with large collections of plastic after a beach trip). We continue to educate our children to respect our planet and to advocate for it. We encourage them to enjoy it, to learn from it, but to never to take it for granted. They will, after all, be the next generation of leaders and decision-makers. Moving forward, I hope that they will learn from our mistakes, but I also hope that we can show them that we learned from them too. We must not wait for the next generation to fix what we broke, because this is impossible. We have to make the change now.

how to teach your kids to take care of the earth

    @soulshinephotographer

    Southeastern Wisconsin
    2 children – Lorenzo (4.5) & Halona (3)

    The story behind the image

This photo was taken while we were planting our first garden at our new house. We really wanted to have the kids be hands-on (literally!) with the gardening process, which they love. This picture was taken on our transplant day when we moved our plants outside. We started all our vegetables from seeds, so when the time was right, most had to be transplanted outdoors into the garden. The kids and I spent the day transplanting our little seedlings with love, care, and tenderness. Yes, it took most of the day as we have well over 200 plants growing!

How do you teach/inspire your kids to help protect our planet?

We are a homesteading family and have been teaching the kids all about the natural world and how to help protect it since they were babies. Taking care of our environment is a big part of our lives. Getting the kids involved in gardening has really helped them become aware of the earth and all it has to offer when treated right and what happens when you don’t. I love talking to the kids about the process and teaching them when to water and feed plants, how the soil absorbs the nutrients and what helps the plants grow strong. Then we introduce other ideas, such as what might happen when other (harmful) things are absorbed by the soil? I like to introduce these types of open-ended questions and let the reasoning happen naturally.

We are also a big hiking family and on our hikes, we observe the natural world. On these hikes we be sure to bring our reusable bags and pick up any trash we see on the way. We have been teaching our children the importance of taking care of our earth by also doing the things listed below. Things you and your family can do too to help protect our earth!

What are some everyday activities we can do to make a difference to our planet?

Some everyday activities we have done/do to make a difference to our planet:
    • turn the lights off when you are not using them;
    • unplug things not in use;
    • use cardboard for burning to reduce the amount being put into landfills;
    • use reusable bags instead of harmful plastic bags;
    • recycle;
    • hang clothes on the line to air dry;
    • use cloth diapers;
    • potty train as soon as possible to eliminate diapers and extra laundry;
    • pick up trash even if it’s not yours;
    • be a part of the community and participate in clean ups;
    • plant tree and bee-friendly flowers;
    • grow our own food to alleviate food transportation waste; and
    • eat less processed foods.

simple things you can do to help the environment with kids

    @erinbethray

    South Florida
    2 boys, ages 7 and 8

    The story behind the image

My images show my boys cleaning up the Broward County waterways. We participated in the 2019 waterway cleanup, which is held across our entire county, from the beaches all the way to the Everglades, and everywhere in between! Wherever there’s a waterway, river, or canal, we’re trying to clean it up.  It’s our county’s largest and longest running environmental event!

How do you teach/inspire your kids to help protect our planet?

We are constantly learning and trying. Every day is a learning experience on how we can help mother earth and protect our planet. I believe if you do good, your kids are always watching and, in turn, they’ll do good! I try to lead by example. We also love to learn about animals. I believe that if you teach children that our earth is the home for these animals, it can help them want to do better for those creatures and our planet. Give them a love of the world and nature and they’ll WANT to help.

What are some everyday activities we can do to make a difference to our planet?

I think one of the easiest things people can to do to make a difference for our planet is to use metal straws. Also, if you’re going out into nature (to the beach, a park, trail, etc.), bring a bag and pick up as much garbage as you can. It’s simple and effective! Also, we should all recycle as much as we can!

how kids can help make a difference in the environment

The earth is not ours to inherit – it’s on loan from our children and grandchildren. If we want there to be anything left we have to act now. All of us.

Every now and then we come across a product or brand that we fall in love with. Whether it’s because the product is amazing, the brand is reputable or the company supports a worthwhile mission, we are all about promoting products we use and companies we believe in. EcoSurvivor is one of those brands that satisfies all of the above attributes. Their products encompass our nature-loving core values in every possible way. From recyclable packaging and energy efficient lighting and power solutions to supporting nonprofit partners like Water4 and their sustainable solutions that are saving millions of lives and changing the world into a cleaner, safer and more eco-friendly place for all.

We had the chance to try out a few of the EcoSurvivor products and were super impressed with them. Not only were they durable enough to stand up to my kid’s abuse, but they’re super functional, practical and affordable. Plus, there’s the added bonus of feeling great about your purchase by supporting a company that’s making a difference in the lives of so many people around the world. If you and your family are outdoorsy, you’re going to love these products!

    Durable dual-purpose products

EcoSurvivor offers a wide-range of durable outdoor tech products such as lighting, speakers and battery packs. Lighting options include LED lanterns, pyramid tent lights, headlamps, night lights and compact lanterns. Their products strike the perfect balance between form and function without sacrificing performance. EcoSurvivor products are made to stand up to the elements – they’re water, dust, sand and impact resistant – making them the perfect gear for hiking, camping and outdoor adventures.

Quite a few of their products are also dual-purpose, making them double handy when you’re outdoors and unplugged. Whether you need portable power combined with LED lighting or a Bluetooth speaker that can also charge your phone, EcoSurvivor products are reliable, versatile and always ready for the next adventure.

Gear Review - Eco Survivor USB Lantern

    EcoSurvivor USB Lantern

If you are an outdoor adventure seeker, make sure you add the EcoSurvivor USB Lantern to your gear list. Built for outdoor use, the lantern has a rugged, impact-resistant construction and rubberized gray finish. It’s waterproof, dust-proof, sand-proof and impact-resistant for those accidental drops and tumbles.  It has a locking carabiner handle for carrying or easy hanging in any location. It’s lightweight, brilliantly bright, tough and durable. This lantern will keep your path well lit during an evening hiking excursion or at the campsite after dark.

The lantern’s energy efficient LEDs provide bright white light (800 lumens) anywhere you need it. The light is dimmable with 3 (high, medium, low) settings to choose from (high is super bright!). All it needs are 6 size D batteries and you’ll get 200-hours (!!) of  battery life when the lantern’s on low. The lantern has a 360° omnidirectional light, so it illuminates a much larger area than flashlights or headlamps. Plus, the light source never needs to be replaced.

Gear Review - Eco Survivor USB LanternBest Outdoor lantern - EcoSurvivor

But my favorite feature is the charger. In case of emergency, the lantern comes equipped with a standard USB port to charge your phone or mobile device using the lantern’s battery power. How handy is that when you’re out on the trail?

    USB Phone charging lantern ecosurvivor

This lantern is a big hit at our house! My only regret is that we don’t have two of these, so the kids could each have their own. With a new baby in the house, we haven’t had time to take it camping or on a night hike, but we will soon! Instead, we are using it for evening backyard/neighborhood exploration in our pajamas (What? You don’t do this?), a bedtime nightlight and basement camping in the kids teepee downstairs. We even dined in the dark with only lantern light the other night, for fun (ok, maybe we’re weird).

It’s stood up to constant love (abuse) from a rowdy 3 and 5 year old. I’m pretty sure it’s been dropped down the stairs a few times and it’s still in great shape. It’s lightweight enough for both kids to carry around and durable enough to be fought over and not break. We highly recommend!

We also had the chance to try out the EcoSurvivor Bluetooth Speaker. I don’t know about you, but we’ve gone through a number of outdoor Bluetooth speakers and have yet to find one that can stand up to the abuse we dish out by taking it hiking, biking, camping, canoeing and beaching. However, we may have finally found “the one.” The EcoSurvivor speaker is super durable and designed to withstand impact and vibration. The IP65 rating means it’s protected from dirt, rain and splashing water.

This speaker pairs wirelessly with your smartphone, tablet or other Bluetooth device, giving you convenient access to your favorite playlists while you’re outdoors and on the go. It has a 30-foot range, perfect for playing DJ at a campsite or on a hike. Use the built-in rubber lanyard for a convenient carrying or hanging options. Perfect for the beach, home, poolside, golfcart and camping.

Best Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker EcoSurvivorGear Review - EcoSurvivor speaker Best Outdoor Gear - Eco Survivor Bluetooth Speaker

This portable speaker uses a rechargeable 4,000 mAh battery, which provides up to 12 hours of play time. It is equipped with a fuel gauge button – just press it to display the remaining battery capacity. Similar to the lantern, this speaker is dual-purpose! It features a USB port (1.0A output) so you can charge your other devices while you listen.

This speaker is also a huge hit with the family. My husband and 3 year-old are the music lovers in our house and they take turns with it (or just fight over it). It’s constantly either playing Avett Brothers or the Trolls soundtrack (I’ll let you figure out who’s picking which). It’s a constant companion for my daughter in my playhouse in the backyard. We also take it with us on our evening bike/wagon rides around the neighborhood. The sound is great, the battery life is long and it’s survived multiple drops in the yard and on the street. We are hard on devices (not on purpose!), but this one has already taken a beating and lived to tell the tale.

While I’m super impressed with the EcoSurvivor products, I’m even more impressed with their mission and charitable giving. When you buy EcoSurvivor products, you’re making a difference around the world. EcoSurvivor donates 50% of its net proceeds to Water4, a 501(c)3 charity that is committed to providing at-risk, indigenous people access to clean water.

The biggest challenge for millions of people today is access to clean water. The world water crisis impacts nearly 1 billion people and causes over 3 million preventable deaths each year. Did you know that women in Africa walk an average distance of 3.75 miles to collect water? And did you know that 80 percent of illnesses in developing countries are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions?

However, your EcoSurvivor purchase can help make this crisis become history. Jasco is helping the fight to end the water crisis by donating 50% of EcoSurvivor net proceeds to clean water projects with Water4 – a nonprofit organization empowering people to eradicate their own water crisis through entrepreneurship, education and technology. It’s Water4’s mission to see the global water crisis eradicated in this lifetime. With each new well that’s drilled — in some of the most remote, hostile places on Earth — the arrival of clean water improves the health of entire villages, provides dignity and self-reliance, freedom from waterborne disease and death, and the promise of long-term health and food security. Access to clean water is truly the foundation for transforming these communities.
