    Water is all around us! Whether it’s the rhythmic lullaby of ocean waves, the tranquil serenity of a mountain lake, or the playful tinkling of a babbling brook, water possesses an uncanny ability to heal, inspire, and rejuvenate. Perhaps you’ve heard about the benefits of “green spaces” and their positive effect on children’s physical and mental health. Green spaces, such as parks and forests, can calm a child’s mind, help them focus, and reduce their anxiety. But, just as beneficial in other ways are the lesser talked about “blue spaces.” Today, marine biologist, photographer, writer, and South Florida mom of two, Bethany Augliere, sheds light on the powerful benefits of spending time near and around water, called Blue Hours. We will delve into the transformative magic of water, exploring why it is essential for our well-being, and how embracing the beauty of “Blue Hours” can lead to a richer, more fulfilling life.     Our attraction to water

    Humans have an innate and profound attraction to water, and this connection is deeply rooted in our evolutionary history and our basic biological needs. Water comprises about 70% of the human body. Water covers more than 70% of Earth. Humans spend the first 9 months of our existence in a watery womb. We require water for various physiological functions, including digestion, circulation, temperature regulation, and waste elimination.

    Our attraction to water may be instinctual, as our ancestors needed to locate and consume freshwater sources to survive. But water also provides a natural playground for humans. From swimming in oceans and lakes to kayaking down rivers or simply relaxing on a beach, water offers a wide range of recreational activities, as well as natural therapy for stress relief. 

    Many of us have heard that green space, or time in nature, benefits the body and mind, especially to combat all our time behind screens and inside under fluorescent lights. Less attention has, though, been paid to blue spaces —  areas around rivers, lakes, oceans, and ponds. Recognizing the importance of water and “blue spaces” in our lives can lead to a deeper appreciation of its value and the need to protect and preserve this precious resource for future generations.

    Ocean memories

    Childhood is a time of wonder and exploration, a period when the world’s mysteries are unveiled through the lens of innocence and curiosity. For many of us, some of the most cherished and enduring memories of our early years are those spent in those blue spaces near water. These experiences aren’t just fleeting moments in our past; they lay the foundation for a lifelong connection with nature. The time we spend as children near water not only forms indelible memories but also fosters a profound bond with these environments that can shape our relationship with the natural world throughout our lives. 

    Some of my best memories involve water, from my childhood to just this past summer. When I was growing up, the water was like a second home. My dad’s parents lived on a lake in northern Virginia, and my mom’s parents lived five minutes from the beach in Long Island, New York. I spent my childhood learning how to bodysurf and boogie board with my grandma, cousins, and friends. We often got tossed in waves, emerging from the water with sand burns on our legs. In the winter, we took family trips down to the Florida Keys. I loved snorkeling in the tranquil waters, scuba diving on coral reefs, and kayaking in mangroves. I have fond memories of searching for hermit crabs with my little brother at the shore’s edge.

    Blue space and mental health 

    Today, Western countries are experiencing a rise in mental health issues, including social anxiety, especially among young people, which is linked to increasing social media use and academic and social pressures. Among all disease groups worldwide, mental disorders are the leading cause of years lived with a disability. We all have stress, but how can we better cope with that stress?

    Blue Mind Theory

    The Blue Mind theory, popularized by marine biologist and neuroscientist Wallace J. Nichols, Ph.D., is the mildly meditative state people fall into when they are near, in, under, or on water. This theory posits that spending time near or around water (be it oceans, lakes, or rivers), triggers a neurological and psychological response that promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and enhances overall well-being. By immersing ourselves in the sights and sounds of blue spaces, we tap into a deep-seated connection with water that calms our mental state, encourages creativity, inspires reflection, and fosters a sense of interconnectedness with the natural world. 

    Blue spaces vs. green spaces

    Spending time in both green spaces (parks, forests, meadows), and blue spaces (near water) can offer a range of benefits to physical and mental well-being, yet they provide distinct experiences due to their unique characteristics. The key difference between green and blue spaces lies in their sensory experiences. Green spaces provide a predominantly visual and olfactory experience, with lush landscapes and the smell of vegetation. In contrast, blue spaces engage multiple senses, including visual, auditory, and tactile sensations. The sound of water and the feeling of coolness in the air or on the skin contribute to a more holistic sensory experience.

    Benefits of blue spaces (and spending time near water)

    The presence of water has an inherently calming effect on the human mind. The benefits of spending time in blue spaces come from 4 main ways: physical activity, stress reduction, providing a space for socialization, and the environmental factors that impact health. Experts have found that spending time in blue space lowers the risk of stress, anxiety, obesity, heart disease, and even premature death.

    Some scientists claim that bodies of water can unlock problem-solving and creativity and that water’s color, sound, and feel can lower pulse rates. Water’s ever-changing patterns and reflections often inspire creativity and introspection, making it a source of artistic inspiration and personal insight.

    The rhythmic sounds of waves, the reflection of the sky on the water’s surface, and the cool breeze all contribute to a sense of serenity. Blue spaces are associated with improved mood and increased feelings of happiness and relaxation. Being near water can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

    Like green spaces, blue spaces also offer opportunities for physical activity, such as swimming, kayaking, or boating. These activities promote physical fitness and mental well-being. Swimming, hiking, exploring, enjoying the company of friends, soaking up vitamin D, it all happens when exploring blue spaces. Many people report feeling a profound connection with nature when near water, which can foster a sense of interconnectedness and environmental stewardship.

    Benefits of blue spaces for kids

    A recent study reveals that recreational exposure to blue space as a child can have a major impact on a person’s adult mental health and can encourage them to maintain a healthy relationship with nature into adulthood. In the study, respondents shared their experiences with blue space during childhood, including how frequently they visited it and how comfortable their parents were allowing them to be in and near water. In a nutshell, more blue space exposure as a child results in better adult mental health and a greater propensity to spend recreational time in nature as an adult.

    And not only that, but adults who had familiarity and confidence around coasts, rivers, and lakes, were more likely to spend recreational time in nature during adulthood, leading to continued benefits. 

    Spending time recreating in blue spaces can also help with your child’s social skills and behavior. Another study found that higher beach attendance each year during childhood was associated with decreased total difficulties and peer relationship problems and increased pro-social behavior.

    Turning a love of water into a career

    While you won’t find this in the study, to me, there’s no question that spending so much time in and around water as a child made a profound impact on who I became and sparked a curiosity that turned a passion into a career.  I whole-heartedly believe that being in and around the water is good for my mind and body, and I feel lucky I had the exposure I did to lakes and oceans as a kid. I truly feel that’s where my love for the water began and shaped the person that I am now. 

    As a young adult, I spent a decade studying wild dolphins in the Bahamas to film and photograph their underwater behavior as a marine biologist with the Wild Dolphin Project. I loved the water so much that I learned the art of freediving — holding your breath while diving until resurfacing. Descending beneath the surface with nothing but the air in my lungs is a sense of peace I often cannot find on land. My time underwater has brought me eye-to-eye with tiger sharks, great hammerheads, dolphins, manta rays, whale sharks, moray eels, sea horses, sea turtles, and countless other fascinating creatures. 

    Fear of what lies beneath

    While I have always loved water and have loved discovering what the open ocean holds, water can illicit fear and anxiety for some people. What’s lurking beneath the surface that I cannot see? Will I get bitten by a shark? The good thing is that countless ways exist to enjoy and benefit from blue spaces. You don’t even have to get wet if you don’t want to.

    For those who harbor a fear of open water and the mysteries it may hold beneath its surface, the benefits of blue spaces are still accessible and transformative without ever having to take the plunge. The simple act of being in blue spaces (near water), can offer a profound sense of calm and connection. The soothing sounds, the refreshing breeze, and the visual serenity of the water’s expanse can instill a deep sense of peace and tranquility. These moments allow one to breathe in the therapeutic essence of blue spaces, nurturing mental well-being, reducing stress, and providing a valuable opportunity to reflect and recharge while maintaining a comfortable distance from the depths that may elicit fear. In this way, the healing power of water remains fully accessible, catering to individuals with varying comfort levels, ensuring that everyone can experience the restorative embrace of nature’s watery wonders.

    Ways to start exploring blue spaces

    Blue space, which encompasses the sea and coastline, rivers, lakes, canals, waterfalls, and even fountains, has been used therapeutically for years. Whether you are already an outdoorsy family looking for new adventures or simply want to find yourself in more blue space, here are some ways you can incorporate water into your life.  

    Keep it simple

    If spending time in lakes or oceans is outside your comfort zone, then start small. Take a walk along a lake or stream, or sit on your patio and watch the rain. Take your little ones to jump in a puddle and watch the water splash or search for salamanders in a small creek. The point is to be intentional with your mind and time. Searching for places to explore water can often lead to finding cool new areas in general that you might not have otherwise found.

    Try something new

    If you are feeling adventurous, try a new (to you) activity on the water, like stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, or tubing down a river. We started bringing a boogie board and skim board to the beach for my 4-year-old just so he could start getting comfortable with them. (We get most of our sports equipment second-hand from thrift shops or friends, especially when we are just starting to try stuff out). 

    Snorkeling

    Most people think you can only snorkel on tropical vacations to Hawaii or the Caribbean, but I often bring my mask and snorkel to lakes and rivers to see what I can find. This summer, I found a newt while snorkeling in a lake in Oregon. In prior years I’ve found giant snapping turtles, American eels, and landlocked salmon in the lakes of Maine or river otters and snakes in the freshwater springs of Florida, in addition to manatees. So, put on a mask and dip your head beneath the surface; you’ll never know what you are going to find.

    Let them lead

    It can be tempting to want to push your kid into trying something new or something that you love. But pushing them is rarely an effective method and can often backfire. Let them lead and take it slow. When I was teaching my then three-year-old to snorkel, I’d take him to a calm lagoon area, let him stay where he could stand, and just dip his head under with goggles to look for critters. Finding calm, clear water is one of the best ways to start building confidence when swimming in lakes or the ocean.

    In Florida, if it’s windy and choppy at the beach, we often take the kids to little spots on the Intracoastal, an inland waterway system made up of natural inlets, saltwater rivers, bays, sounds, and man-made canals. It’s more protected than the beach, which means the water is much calmer and without waves. 

    Bring friends

    Nature is a great place to reconnect with friends and socialize. Adventure friends, shared joy, and positive peer influence can help us and our kids expand our horizons and potentially try new things we might not otherwise try. And parents might also feel more comfortable trying new things with more experienced parents nearby. I love being that positive influence, helping other families feel a bit more comfortable in the ocean if they are with us.

    100 Blue Hours movement

    My passion is to help others enjoy the water for their own mental and physical well-being. Ultimately, I also hope this inspires people to care about these vital ecosystems and take positive action toward the environment, whether it’s recycling more, shopping second-hand, minimizing single-use plastics, participating in beach cleanups or learning about a local endangered species.

    For this reason, I co-founded the 100 Blue Hours movement along with Brittini Arlene, a fellow marine biologist and water-loving mom.

    The mission: spend 100 hours in or around the water in one year. This averages to about 2 hours a week.

    The movement underscores the importance of reconnecting kids with the natural world. Spending quality time in blue spaces fosters a deep and lasting connection between children and the environment. These experiences instill a sense of wonder, respect, and appreciation for the natural world, encouraging future generations to become stewards of the environment. After all, “in the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand,” said Baba Dioum.

    Why 100 blue hours in a year?

    The goal of spending 100 hours in blue spaces over the course of a year is significant for several reasons, but it is also achievable, striking a balance between setting a meaningful target and ensuring it’s realistic for most families:

    100 hours represent a substantial amount of time spent in nature, which can lead to tangible physical and mental health benefits for children and adults alike. Regular exposure to blue spaces can reduce stress, boost mood, and promote overall well-being.  Setting a specific goal of 100 hours encourages families to consciously prioritize outdoor activities in blue spaces. This intentionality can lead to positive behavioral changes, such as reducing screen time and increasing physical activity.

    One hundred hours spread across 365 days provides flexibility for families to plan outings at their own pace. It allows for a variety of short and long visits, accommodating busy schedules and different seasons. 100 hours over a year adds up to meaningful and cumulative experiences. Over time, these experiences can shape a child’s perspective, fostering a deep and lasting connection with the natural world.

    We also think the goal of 100 hours over a year is attainable for families of varying backgrounds and access to blue spaces. It doesn’t require expensive vacations or extensive travel. It doesn’t require you to homeschool or forgo other meaningful activities. Many communities have accessible local water bodies, parks, or green spaces where families can spend quality time. While it encourages regular outdoor time, the 100-hour target is not overly demanding. It allows families to enjoy the process without feeling pressured to meet strict quotas, making the experience enjoyable and sustainable.

    Kayaking is a highly popular water-based activity, but it also provides kids with a host of different benefits. Here are a few benefits of kayaking for kids that we really appreciate:

    • Nature appreciation – Kayaking can be a superb way to help foster a love and appreciation for nature and the world around them. From a kayak, your child will be able to see things in and on the water that they’d never see from land. This can awaken their sense of curiosity about ecology, wildlife, and the environment.

    • Unique vantage point – There’s nothing better than seeing birds and animals from a close vantage point, and kayaking can be a great way to achieve this. It can allow your kid to explore areas that they wouldn’t be able to reach on foot, which gives them a whole new perspective on and appreciation of the world around them.

    • Teaches cooperation and determination – In order to successfully complete a kayak trip, everyone needs to work together.     Best age to start kayaking with kids

    Kayaking is one of our family’s favorite water sports. And one of the great things about kayaking is that you can start kayaking with kids from an early age. The age at which you start kayaking with your kids will depend on the child’s maturity level, swimming skills, and physical ability, as well as your own kayaking skill and experience.

    Kids as young as 2 or 3 can kayak with a grown-up by sitting in the center of a tandem kayak (called “duffing”). However, this is only recommended if you have some kayaking experience, your child can sit still for the length of your kayaking adventure and can float on their own face-up when wearing a personal-floatation device. This is a great option for smaller kids and toddlers to get them started. 

    Around age 5, kids can sit in the front seat of a double kayak and help paddle. This is also the age when younger children can consider getting a solo kayak that’s the right size for them.

    When can a child paddle their own kayak?

    Kids can start practicing their kayaking skills in a single child-sized kayak on calm water as young as four years old. At this age, practice will primarily involve holding the paddle, practicing moving it around, and paddling for a few minutes. In calm waters, young children can manage very short distances in a small kayak. There should always be a skilled adult close by, and small children should wear a PFD and be able to swim.

    By the age of seven, most kids will be able to paddle their own kid-sized kayak independently. By this age, most kids have a longer attention span and the physical strength needed to kayak continuously for half a mile to a mile (this means younger paddlers should be able to paddle between a half an hour to an hour).

    Safety tips for kayaking with kids

    1. Personal floatation devices 

    All children under 13 years of age are required to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable life vest or personal flotation device (PFD) when on a boat. There are different size requirements for children of different weights. Infant-size PFDs fit children who are 8-30 lbs. and have a neck pad and a crotch strap.  Child-size PFDs fit kids 30-50 lbs. Youth PFDs fit kids that are 50-90 lbs.

    2. Choose the right location to kayak

    Another important safety consideration when kayaking with kids is choosing your destination. Locations with high currents, waves, or heavy boat traffic can easily become scary and overwhelming for kids. When starting kayaking with young kids, we highly recommend starting in calm open waters that are clear, no waves or wind, and are less trafficked by larger boats. The first time your kids kayak should be a safe and fun (and relatively short) outing. 

    3. Master a few skills

    It’s highly recommended that your kids know how to swim before you start kayaking with kids. Even with a personal floatation device, knowing how to get in and out of your kayak and what to do in case of tipping over or getting stuck is important. Before you go, make sure to practice wet-exits, braces, and other safety techniques.     4. Smaller paddle

    The paddle is your connection with the water, so be sure to get your child a paddle that is the right size and comfortable. Kayak paddles come in various sizes for children. You’ll want one that is shorter and lighter than adult-sized kayaking paddles. The perfect paddle length for your child will depend on their height and the kayak’s width. But usually, child-specific paddles will be shorter, lighter, and with smaller blades than regular paddles. Consider paddles that are about 200 cm long with a narrow shaft. Kids can tire easily and will have more trouble managing a large paddle that’s large and unruly for them. The right paddle could make the difference between a pleasant trip and a frustrating (and exhausting) one. 

    5. Know before you go

    Water and weather conditions are important when deciding where to kayak with kids. Make sure you do your research on the place where you’ll be kayaking with kids. Study tides, currents, and boat traffic with the kids ahead of time so you know what to expect (and when). Be sure to check the weather forecast ahead of your trip so that you know what to expect (and then check again on the day of your kayaking excursion).

    6. Never strap a child into a kayak

    Never ever strap your child into a kayak. Although you may think this is a good idea for wiggly children, it’s extremely dangerous if you capsize. 

    7. Set the rules

    Safety rules are essential when spending time on the water with kids. Before you ever get into the water, let your kids know the rules and what the consequences will be if they do not follow them. Kayaking rules may be different when on a small pond, as opposed to going down a river with current. Make sure your child knows how far from you they can go and any rules about stopping along the way. Depending on your kayaking location, other rules could include the following:

    • Life jackets are to be worn at all times.
    • No standing on the kayaks. 
    • No fooling around, leaning, or reaching out of the kayak.
    • No jumping in and out of the kayak without permission.
    • Paddles are not toys and should only be used for paddling, not as a play pretend sword or fighting staff.

    8. Have a plan

    Create a float plan each time you go paddling, and inform a friend or family member where you’re going and when to expect you back. Go over emergency situations with the other adults (and older children) so that you know who’s in charge of what if a situation should arise. Your plan should include what to do if a boat tips over (capsizes), someone gets hurt, falls out of their boat, or gets separated from the fleet. Procedures should be established and understood by each adult for each of these situations.

    8. Maintain your ratio

    You should always aim to have one adult for every child in your kayaking group until you’re confident in all paddlers’ skills and experience, including kids. Beginner paddlers should never take kids on the water without an experienced kayaker to accompany them.

    Unless you are a very experienced kayaker, you will generally want to find calm water and minimal current to start kayaking with kids. The best places to go kayaking with kids have little to no current and lots of things to do and see. 

    Small protected lakes, bays, and slow rivers or streams are a great place to start kayaking with kids in order to develop your child’s paddling and navigation skills. Places with different landscapes, wildlife, bridges, tunnels, and other features are fun and motivating for kids to kayak through.  Shallow waters also make kayaking stress free and fun. One-way downstream paddling is fun for kids at this age because it requires little strength (not a lot of paddling) and is a lot of fun.  

    To find kid-friendly paddling destinations, talk to experienced paddlers or paddling experts at your local outdoor shop. You might also try your county or state parks service websites or a local conservation agent. Local parenting Facebook groups or outdoor adventure clubs are also great resources and can provide lots of options for safe kayaking locations.

    How to choose a kayak for kids

    Once your child has mastered the basic paddle strokes and safety techniques and has the maturity to paddle solo, you might want to consider getting them a child-sized kayak of their own. Adult kayaks are built for adults and are not always the best option for kids (even larger kids). Kayaks designed specifically for kids will help your child learn to be a confident kayaker and last for years. 

    There are two main different types of kayaks – sit-on kayaks and sit-in kayaks. Sit-on-top kayaks are probably the easiest kayak to start with kids and the best choice for warm water kayaking. These types of kayaks offer a variety of positions for kids to sit in, which helps them get comfortable and stay in the kayak longer.

    Sit-on kayaks (as opposed to a sit-in kayak) also tend to be more stable, difficult to capsize, and nearly impossible to sink because they have built-in drainage holes. Kids often prefer sit-on-top kayaks because they’re less restricting. They’re also easier to enter and exit, meaning that your kid can go for a swim and climb back on. And, if they flip over, the water drains out easily and quickly. 

    When choosing a kayak for kids, you’ll also want to consider the size and weight of the kayak. Buying a kayak is an investment, so you want one that’s easy to transport (so you’ll actually use it) and can be used for years as your child grows. Other things to consider (and great features to have) are storage options, ergonomic features, durability, carry handles, and material.

Kids of all ages love water play, and water activities can keep kids entertained for hours. Having a few easy water activities on hand is a great parental trick to have up your sleeve.     Backyard water toys

    Get ready to have some water fun and be inspired to let your kids get wet! Nothing says summer fun, like outdoor water games for kids. Water is one of most fun ways to stay cool, keep kids entertained, and have a blast! We’ve put together the ultimate list of outdoor water activities, so be sure to take note of your favorites and try them with your kids the next time they’re looking to cool off or find something fun to do outside.

    Water sprinkler

    Kids will delight in playing in the sprinkler! It’s one of the best backyard water toys! And as a bonus, the garden gets watered too! When it’s warm, a simple sprinkler set up in the yard can keep your little ones entertained, active, and laughing for HOURS. All you need to do is set up a basic yard sprinkler in an open area where the kids can run through it and play. At first, they’ll jump and squeal and run away from the water, but eventually, they’ll fully embrace it and go all in! It’s so much fun to watch kids play in the sprinkler. And it’s a great opportunity to get your camera out and practice taking some amazing sprinkler photos. If you have really little kids, maybe this sprinkler splash pad would be fun!

    Trampoline play

    A trampoline might not sound like a water toy, but it can certainly be fun to add water to! A trampoline may be one of the best overall toys for a backyard you can invest in for year-round play. However, during the summer months, it can get a little toasty. To cool things down, try adding a trampoline sprinkler attachment so you can amp up your summer bouncing with some water fun.     Slip and slide

    A slip and slide is a super fun and easy way to get your kids outside, active, and having a blast! If you’ve got the room, we like the ones that have built-in sprinklers and end in a big fun splash pool! Don’t want to buy one? Create your own homemade slip and slide using a long piece of tarpaulin and a garden hose. It’s even better if you have a kid’s water slide to go down. If your kids like thrills, try using a squidge of liquid dish soap to make the slide extra slippery (and a little bubbly)!

    Swimming pool/inflatable pool

    If you have access to a swimming pool, the summer water fun never ends! We’ve got all kinds of fun games to play in the swimming pool and fun pool toys, if you need some ideas. If you don’t have an in ground pool, a small inflatable kiddie pool is a great backyard activity for warm spring and hot summer days. We have this inflatable pool that the kids love to play in! It’s big enough that the whole family can get in and play, but shallow enough for the little ones.

    Water game ideas for kids

    Kids love playing games. And when you add water to any game, you take it to the next level of fun! These fun water games are perfect for siblings or groups of friends to play together. They can be played in a garden, the backyard, or a field at your local park. They work brilliantly if you need some outdoor party games for hot weather festivities. 

    Pass the water 

    All you need for this fun game is some water and a few cups! Have the kids stand in a line. The first person has a plastic cup filled with water. They have to move the cup over their head and pour the water out behind them for the next person to catch in their cup. Repeat all the way down the line until the water is gone! After each kid has poured the water, have them run to get in line at the back of the line to keep it going. 

    Water obstacle course 

    You can get creative with making a water obstacle course for kids. Build an outdoor obstacle course with simple things that everyone has in the house, such as brooms, buckets, rope, pillows, pool noodles, etc. Try using pool noodles as archways to run through, doing a water limbo under the garden hose, or add running through a sprinkler or jumping in an inflatable pool! If you have backyard playground equipment (swings and slides), add them to the course. Then divide the kids into teams and have them make their way through the obstacle course one at a time. This is a fun outdoor game where the kids can challenge each other in teams!

    Water battle games

    Water guns/water blasters

    Let your kids loose with water guns or water blasters for the ultimate water cool-down activity! No squirt guns; feel free to use a spray bottle or a squirt bottle instead. Let them have free reign to make up their own games or give them some rules. My kids like playing tag with water guns. Only the person who is “it” can shoot the others with their squirt gun, and everyone else runs around like crazy until it’s their turn! You could also set up targets (cans or empty water bottles) for them to shoot and challenge each other on who has the most accurate aim. Keep a bucket of water available for refilling. 

    Water balloon fight

    There’s nothing better on a warm summer’s day than getting competitive with a water balloon fight! Without a doubt, water balloon fights will cool off the kids from the summer heat and cause them to squeal in delight! You could also use water balloons for other games, including water balloon baseball! Pro tip: Don’t love the trash and mess of traditional water balloons?     Water balloon toss

    Not interested in a full-on water balloon fight? If you’re looking for something a bit tamer, try a water balloon toss. Line the kids up across from each other and let them toss the water balloon back and forth to each other. Each time they successfully toss the balloon and catch it, they have to get farther away from each other by taking a step backwards. Each step will make it a little harder. The last team with an unpopped balloon wins.

    Water play ideas for toddlers and preschoolers 

    Water table 

    Water tables are fun and one of the best open-ended toys for toddlers and preschoolers. We’ve had the same water table for years, and all my kids have loved playing with (and in/on) it. Little ones just pulling up can stand at a water table and splash away! And the simple joy of it grows with the kids. It’s easily adaptable for lots of ages with a little creativity and imagination. Add some measuring cups, balls, toy boats, or dolls/characters, and turn a simple water table into a water playhouse! When you’re not using it with water, fill it with sand, mud, or water beads for a different type of sensory play. There are so many great ways to play with a simple water table.

    Frozen water sensory play 

    The best water play activity for toddlers is to set up some easy water sensory play. On a hot day, they’ll appreciate a frozen water activity! Try freezing ice cubes with their favorite plastic toys inside and see if they can melt the ice cubes to free their toys!

    Or, freeze water in various containers of different shapes and sizes to create an assortment of ice blocks. Supply kids with washable paint and paint brushes and let them paint the frozen ice shapes with their brushes, fingers, or even toes. The ice will melt as they paint (and as it sits out), creating cool paint designs and changing the color and texture of the paint. This sensory activity is a great option for younger kids, but older ones will still enjoy getting a messy and creative, too.

    Try freezing orbeez (water beads) for a lovely cooling ice play activity. But only use this for children over 3 years old. Orbeez are not safe to eat, so can’t be played with by kids that still put things in their mouths! 

    Car wash

    Get out the hose, buckets, and soap, and get ready for some fun! Set up a car wash for your kids so that they can wash whatever needs washing! Use towels or sponges to clean all your family vehicles outside and get your cars nice and shiny! Or wash the kids’ bikes, wagons, muddly Matchbox cars, or Cozy Coupes! You could even have a dog wash if you run out of vehicles!

    Water chalk paint 

    If you have leftover bits of chalk from summertime chalk pavement drawing – mix them with water, leave them to soften, and then you have your own water chalk paint to paint on the pavement with! No leftover chalk, no problem! Here’s what you’ll need to make your own sidewalk chalk paint:

    • 1 cup warm water
    • 1 cup corn starch
    • Food dye colors of your choice
    • Muffin tin
    • Mixing bowl
    • Whisk
    • Paintbrushes

    In your mixing bowl, add the warm water and corn starch. Whisk until cornstarch is dissolved. Pour your mixture in equal parts into the muffin tin. Add food dyes. Let the kids grab a paintbrush and go to work!

    Outdoor STEM water activities for kids

    Make a DIY water wall 

    Use your recycling and engineering skills to create a really easy DIY water wall for your kids! All you need to do is collect some empty plastic bottles and cut the bottoms off or poke holes in them. Then, tie them to a frame or a fence (zip ties work great for this) so that the water pours from one to another. Let your kids figure out where everything should go and how to get the water down the wall and into the next bottle. Add some water runs (old plastic train tracks, PVC pipe, or bottles cut in half length-wise work great for this) if you need more help moving the water along. And then you’ll have your own water wall! They’ll enjoy this in all seasons!

    Make your own stream 

    Older kids will love this science water activity! Get your kids to create a stream with rocks, pebbles, tin foil, etc. Challenge them to make a stream that not only contains the water, but flows. You can make this more tricky for slighter older kids by removing the tin foil and only using nature items. You just may be super impressed by their creativity and ingenuity! 

    Natural outdoor water fun for kids

    You certainly don’t need to stay in the backyard to play with water. There are so many amazing ways to take water play further afield and out into nature! Adding natural elements and bodies of water will entertain kids of any age, throughout the year. 

    Lake and stream play

    If you’re lucky enough to live near a stream or lake, make sure to visit and check it out. There are so many fun things to do on the water. If you have a small pond, consider doing some pond dipping and study what you find. Or how about try your hand at skipping stones (there’s a science to it). You could try taking out a remote-controlled boat for a spin on the lake. Younger kids can try their hand at making boats out of nature items and sailing them down the stream or even having a race with them.

    Play in a creek

    Exploring a creek is by far my children’s all-time favorite outdoor activity. If you’re lucky enough to live anywhere close to a creek (and I bet you are!), take your kids to check it out. Creeks provide so many amazing opportunities for exploration, curiosity and imaginative play! We’ve got a great post all about the incredible benefits of exploring creeks with kids. Kids will have hours of fun playing in a creek. Try searching for waterfalls or bring a net and search for creek wildlife.     Splash parks & splash pads

    For those of you who aren’t near nature-made splash areas, you can still have fun getting active in places like splash playgrounds or splash pads! A splash park is a brilliant way for small kids to cool down in hot weather. More and more cities are building wonderful splash pads to run around in!  These are especially great for families with babies and toddlers because you don’t have to worry about the water being too deep!

    Adventurous water activities for older kids and teens

    Go fishing 

    Fishing is a great water activity for kids because it teaches kids lots of life lessons. Fishing is fun for younger kids, too, but older kids will be able to fish by themselves and so have a higher level of independence. In our day and age, instant gratification is almost a way of life for kids and teens, but fishing teaches patience and perseverance. It’s a great way to teach kids about anticipation and how to slow down. Lots of fun family time can happen whilst fishing – great family conversations can happen whilst fishing!     Rockpooling/tidepooling

    If you’re lucky enough to live close to the ocean, head to a beach and find a rock pool (tidepool) to explore. Tidepooling is an activity that will guarantee keeping kids occupied for ages! There’s so much to see and discover. Search for crabs, snails, starfish, jellyfish, urchins, and cool shells. Kids will love the surprise element of rock pooling because you never know what you will find!     Stand-up paddle boarding

    Paddle boarding is a great activity for families. If your kids are happy in the water, then they will love stand-up paddle boarding! If you are taking your kids out for stand-up paddle boarding, make sure the place you go has calm water (low surf, no waves) so that your kids can learn to paddle board more easily. And make sure they get comfortable falling in, because that’s part of the process! But it doesn’t just have to be about paddleboarding. If they enjoy swimming, then get off the board and swim with them together! Or fish from your paddleboard. Paddle boarding is a great way to enjoy the water together!     Kayaking 

    Another favorite water activity of ours is kayaking. Depending on the age/size of your kids, they can join you on a ride or paddle along in their own kayaks! This is by far our favorite and most recommended kayak for kids. Starting out on slow, shallow, tranquil waters will make your first kayaking adventures safe and enjoyable for every member of your family. Small protected lakes are the best places to learn and teach your kids how to paddle and make sure that you have lessons first or head out with an experienced kayaker.

    You’ll be surprised how quickly children will learn how to use their paddles to navigate a kayak. And if they’re able to go a distance on their own (even in very shallow water where you’ll easily be able to walk to them if they need help), the pride on their faces from that sense of independence is absolutely priceless. It’s like learning to ride a bike for the first time!

    Canoeing 

    Once you’ve mastered kayaking, perhaps try canoeing? It’s a bit trickier than a kayak, but you can fit a lot more into a canoe. Seeing the world from the water is a different perspective for kids and is such a fun adventure.     Wild swimming / lake swimming 

    Whilst wave swimming in a pool is a fun activity for kids of any age, wild swimming or swimming in open water can make swimming more of an adventure. Whether it’s the sea, a river, or a lake, conquering the fear of open water unlocks a world of fun and adventure. Although, parents must still be extremely cautious with water as the risk of drowning is extremely serious (life jackets are a must). However, with the right preparation and knowledge, open swimming can become one of the most exhilarating ways to spend time in the wild with your kid.

    To make it safe, make sure you know the tide and currents of the water that you’re planning to swim in. Know the depth of any water you’re jumping into. Provide constant supervision at all times while kids are swimming in open water, even in your kids are good swimmers.

    Bodyboarding (boogie boarding)

    Bodyboarding (or boogie boarding) is one of the best ways to spend time in the water and one of our favorite summer activities! Bodyboarding blends beach fun with a more exciting experience for older kids! We absolutely love catching waves with the kids, you don’t need to have the technique of surfing, you don’t have to go deep into the water, and you can bodyboard in waves of any height too!     Skimboarding

    Skimboarding is a fun, active, and affordable way to keep your kids entertained on the beach. Skimboarding is gaining in popularity, and for a good reason. It’s a safe way to introduce your kids to the ocean, challenge their abilities, boost their confidence, and let them have fun!     Surfing

    Once you’ve mastered body boarding – try surfing! Surfing is an excellent way to build water confidence in kids and also builds balance and coordination. Remember to check whether you can surf on the beach you’re at and ensure that you only surf where there is a lifeguard presence. Surfing can be tricky when you first start, but it can be an exciting and fun way to spend time in the water as a family!   • How to Get Started in Youth Sailing

    Sailing on a boat in the open sea sounds like a magical (albeit expensive) adventure. But, getting into sailing is easier and more affordable than you might think. Youth sailing is a really exhilarating recreational activity and an exciting sport. If you think sailing is something that your kids might be interested in trying out, you may be at a loss on where and how to get started. However, you’re in luck! Today, Jen Barnes, South Carolina mom of three teens, is here to walk you through everything you need to know to get started with youth sailing. She’ll give you info on where to go, the best age to get started sailing, what to expect from lessons, how to find a youth sailing program near you, what gear you need, and so much more!

    Getting into youth sailing

    Sailing is not only one of the oldest modes of transportation, it’s one of the oldest water activities for enjoyment. How to get started in youth sailing may sound like a mystery – some hidden gem of knowledge that you need a personal invitation to get into. However, that’s not the case! I have personally been in that exact position with my own children and can speak to how intimidating it can feel to get started. But, if you have kids who love the water and want to learn some new skills, sailing is a great activity, sport, and hobby. After going through this learning process with my own kids, I’m excited to be able to pass this info on to you! I’ve put together this article with all the details and resources you need to get started with sailing. I’m here to encourage you and help you introduce your kids to the adventurous new activity of youth sailing.

    You don’t need an ocean to learn how to sail

    It may come as a surprise that you can find youth sailing programs in all 50 states in America. The only things you really need to sail are a body of water large enough to hold dinghy size sailboats and a location where wind can be utilized. There are a lot of places that can happen, so don’t worry if you don’t live on the coast somewhere. While coastal areas have more sailing opportunities, even landlocked states offer places for young sailors to get their start. My son learned on a large man-made lake in South Carolina, nowhere near the coast.

    Where to get started in youth sailing

    The best place to get a good start with learning how to sail is a youth sailing camp held at a local sailing club. Clubs that offer beginner sailing classes and lessons often have week-long camps for kids, designed to get them from zero to sailing proficiently in a week.

    Some locations may not have a “sailing club” per se, but rather a marina with a few small crafts and a single instructor. My son first learned how to sail over the course of a week while at Boy Scout summer camp. There are a wide variety of summer programs for kids to learn about sailing. Summer is a good time to start because the weather conditions are most favorable.

    Do your research to find a sailing club or camp

    If your child is interested in learning how to sail, the first step is to do an internet search to find a sailing club near your home base. Alternatively, if your kids are ready to go away to camp, you may find a few sleep-away summer sailing camp options.

    In my opinion, the two most important factors in choosing a program for new sailors are: (1) a focus on water safety and (2) a fun environment. The focus on safety is self-explanatory – your child needs to know how to stay safe when on the water. Making it fun is just as important, though. People who love sailing love for kids to learn sailing! Sailing instructors will work to teach kids because they want to pass on the skills and help others find the same enjoyment and love for the sport. Instructors that make sailing fun will make a huge difference in your child’s experience.

    The best age to get started in youth sailing

    You will find most programs divide kids based on their ability levels and not necessarily by age. There are sailing kids who have been on boats from an early age, but most begin learning the basics of sailing between 7 and 10 years of age. However, plenty of adults are also learning how to sail, so you’re never too old to learn. 

    Kids sailing lessons should only begin after a child can pass a swim test. Your child must be comfortable in the water on his/her own. Sailing instruction in a camp format will not always be one-on-one. So, if your child is not ready for group instruction, you may want to consider a few private sailing lessons first.

    Consider the maturity level and attention span of your child

    It is necessary for your child to have a good attention span and the ability to receive and pay attention to detailed verbal instruction. Expect light classroom instruction at the start of each day or lesson. However, sailing for children is best taught through hands-on, experiential learning. Kids will be shown a skill and then asked to show what they have learned.

    Also, I think it’s best to have a conversation with your child to see how he/she feels about being in a potentially stressful situation. Most programs will put kids into a capsize drill and teach them how to respond for safety reasons. If you or your child is not ready for this, put off learning to sail for a bit until they are ready.

    What to expect from youth sailing camp or lessons

    Youth programs focusing on sailing are usually divided by skill level, not by age. Youth sailing classes can be categorized in the following ways: (1) beginner, (3) intermediate, and (3) advanced. Depending on the children’s skill levels, here are a few things they may learn and focus on at each level. 

    Beginner-level sailing lessons for kids

    If your child is just starting out learning to sail and is brand new to sailing, you can expect sailing instruction to include both a foundation of basic sailing terms and a fundamental understanding of sailing. On-land seamanship, which includes boat rigging, basic sailing knots, and getting the boat ready to sail, are a part of beginner sailing. In addition, your child will learn how to get the boat into the water and how to handle it. This includes how to maneuver the sail lines, the rudder, and other technical skills.

    Intermediate-level sailing lessons for kids

    Intermediate sailing courses and camps will reinforce the sailing vocabulary and basic sailing rules. Then they add etiquette of boat handling around other boats on the water. Instructors will give intermediate youth sailors more experience out in the water. Weather and other circumstances beyond their control will challenge them. They will develop an understanding of the physics of sailing and learn how to sail upwind, downwind, and how to tack.

    Advanced-level sailing lessons for kids

    More advanced sailors will begin to learn about adventure sailing in more challenging conditions and may even begin to dip their toes into sail racing.  High school sailing can be for the joy of sailing or the sport of sailing, so many kids continue to develop their skills through youth sailing lessons and camps as they reach their teen years. Junior sailing programs and high school teams usually focus on racing teams competing in regattas. This type of sailing requires more advanced instruction that goes into depth all about sailing and develops racing skills.

    What gear do you need to get started sailing 

    Every beginner sailing program will provide kids with the sailing equipment they need, including beginner sailing boats. The club will loan all aspects of the kids’ sailboat, such as ropes and sails, and a youth sailing life jacket as part of the program.

    Initially, you’ll just need to provide proper clothing for sailing. The best clothes to wear sailing are materials that dry quickly and don’t allow the cold dampness to linger. You will also need to send a sailing wetsuit with your child if your child will be learning in cold water. 

    As your child progresses in their sailing into experienced sailors, you may need to incorporate additional kids sailing gear. Sailing shoes and gloves will become necessary later. Depending on the climate where you live, you may need to invest in cold weather sailing gear, such as heavy waterproof jackets to keep kids warm and dry. 

    Otherwise, all beginner sailing camps and lessons should take care of the major gear. Sun protection is a must, though, so send your kids with sunscreen, a hat, and polarized sunglasses. Hours on the water can take a toll!

    Preparing kids for sailing camp or lessons

    If your child is apprehensive about learning to sail, I would encourage you to check out a few books from the library and a few YouTube videos so he/she can visualize what is ahead. There are also some fun sailing movies that your child can watch (just make sure to watch them first and vet them – some sailing movies have intense weather scenes that can be scary for some kids).

    Benefits of learning how to sail

    Youth sailing has many benefits, no matter how advanced a child’s skills become. The obvious benefits of sailing are the time outdoors and having an activity on the water that brings enjoyment. Basic sailing skills make this a lifelong benefit and an activity your child can enjoy for years and years. 

    Learning to harness the wind and make it work for your purpose is an incredible hands-on experience in physics. Your kids will hardly know they are learning because they will be having so much fun. I’ve also seen firsthand the confidence it gives kids in and around the water. Confidence in boat handling is also a lifelong skill that is very important, especially if you live close to water. 

    Young people love to learn new skills, and sailing is a skill that can get kids on a path to lifelong outdoors enjoyment. Sailing also comes with a lot of chores and responsibility. As much as kids can complain about tedious tasks, when you attach those tasks to something fun most kids enjoy the work aspect. There is a sense of pride in taking care of something you care about. As kids grow, they enjoy proving themselves in these ways. Watching kids pull their sailboats out of the water and de-rig their sailboats is rewarding as a parent, too.

    Moving beyond basic sailing

    Kids who want to explore sailing with more advanced sailing instruction can prepare themselves for even more sailing adventures and take their skills to the next level. Some will go on to enjoy the competitive aspect of racing sailboats, which can be exciting for kids who may not be particularly athletic. However, kids will find the physical aspects of sailboat racing are still a part of the sport. It tends to be more of a thinking sport than athletic prowess. Racing sailboats is a really unique team sport that could allow your child to thrive in a competitive environment, learn good sportsmanship, and be a part of something amazing. It also opens up scholarship opportunities at some schools. 

    Further explorations may open doors to family sailing trips where your child can take the rest of the family on adventures. It might also lead to a job. Perhaps some will get certified so they can bareboat charter for multi-day sailing in a really fabulous destination.

    Learning the art of stone skipping

    When you approach a body of water, be it a stream, lake, pond, or ocean, what are you inclined to do:
     
    A)    Walk, wade, or jump into the water
    B)     Gaze at the water and think deep thoughts
    C)     Pick up a stone and start skimming it across the water
     
    While there is absolutely no wrong answer here, for many years I would have toggled between options A & B. Mainly that’s because as an adult, I didn’t know how to skip stones! I’m not sure how it happened, but I seemed to have missed that chapter of childhood. I hope I’m not the only adult in this pickle!

    Fortunately, my husband quickly remedied the situation and became my rock skipping coach. He took it upon himself to teach me how to skip stones and the fun of this super simple outdoor activity. I was so excited to be a purveyor of this newfound talent that I couldn’t wait to teach my son how to do the same. Now that I find myself squarely in camp option C, I am happy to share with the Run Wild My Child community the physics and fun of skipping stones. 

    Teaching kids how to skip stones

    Throwing rocks into the water and making a huge splash is fun for all kids. But, learning how to skip a rock is a childhood wonder! It seems like skipping rocks should be impossible! Rocks are heavy and they sink in water. Skimming stones across the surface of the water seems almost magical to a child and it’s a blast (for both the child and the adult) practicing and perfecting your technique.

    Today, I’ll walk you through the basics of how to skip stones and how to teach your children to skip stones. We’ll go over how to choose the perfect skipping rock, the right throwing technique, and the physics behind how to make rocks bounce on water!

    The history of skipping stones

    The first written record of stone skipping dates back to 1583. Who knew that skipping stones has such a long history? Legend has it that an English King skipped sovereigns (a.k.a British coins) across the River Thames in London, England. And stone skipping appeared in the written works of Shakespeare and Homer.

    Culturally speaking, stone skipping has its own unique word or term across different languages and cultures. In France, when one skips a stone, it’s referred to as ricochet. In Denmark, skipping stones is called snuffing. The Eskimos skip rocks on ice while Bedouins skip rocks across smooth sand. And, if you’re into pop culture, we even saw a character slide rocks across the ice in Game of Thrones! 

    Best stones for skippin’

    When it comes to rocks and stones, no two skip alike. You’ll want to take a few minutes doing some rock-onnaissance (you know, looking for the types of stones most conducive to skipping) in order to find the perfect skipping stone. Because throwing the stone is only half the battle, you also need to carefully choose the right rock for skipping. 

    Flattish stones that aren’t perfectly shaped, but have a uniform thickness and a little heft seem to work best. Helf is important because the rock needs weight in order to be thrown well. Imagine you’d have a hard time skipping a cracker or a paperweight across the water. The uniform thickness means that the weight is equally distributed and the rock won’t flip end over end when thrown. And the stone’s flatness maximizes its lift and provides a landing/bouncing surface. 

    How to hold a stone for skipping

    Find flat water

    The best places to skip stones are bodies of water that have a nice wide flat surface. Lakes and ponds are ideal. Rivers and streams can work, but you need a stretch of open water and few obstacles. Ocean and swift-moving rivers are tough due to the waves and uneven surface of the water. When you’re practicing your stone skimming, you’ll want to look for the best option and a place with lots of available rocks! 

    The best stone skipping technique: it’s all in the wrist

    Once you’ve selected a nice flat stone, the next step is mastering how to hold it. You’ll want to set the rock in the crook of your pointed finger and thumb. Then, curl your other fingers beneath it. Holding a rock in this fashion helps to set it up for a fast spin, which is needed to skip along the water’s surface.
     
    Next, you’ll want to stand up straight, feet parallel to the water, with your wrist cocked high above your shoulder. From there, throw the stone down and release the stone at your side, as parallel to the water as possible. A good throw is all in the wrist. It’s important to throw the stone from the side angle (much like a baseball pitcher might throw a curveball) because an overhand or overhand throw will only sink your stone, not skip it.

    The physics of skipping stones

    Skipping stones is a super fun way to pass time in nature. It is also an excellent way to scratch the surface of subjects like science and physics with kids.  The physics behind successful stone skipping is pretty simple.

    There are two key forces at work when skipping rocks: (1) gravity (which pulls the rock down) and (2) lift (which pushes the stone up). For successful stone skipping, the lift force needs to be greater or the stone will sink. For this to happen, attention to the type of rock and the thrower’s form is important.

    When a rock is thrown with enough force (velocity) and spin at the right angle, it creates a small wave of air. That wave pushes the stone as it hits the surface of the water. When the velocity of the stone is greater than the lift force of the wave, the rock will continue to rise up and skip off the surface of the water again and again until maxed out and then the rock will sink.

    The gyroscopic effect (spinning) stabilizes the stone as it bounces along the water. As long as it is spinning fast enough, the spinning will prevent it from tipping over and/or sinking into the water. This is similar to a spinning top – it has to be spinning fast enough to stay upright.

    In case you ever find yourself as a contestant on Jeopardy or simply want to impress the family with a few fun factoids, here are a few stone skipping trivia gems for you:

    • The magic angle between a skipping stone and water is 20 degrees.
    • The distance between stone skips is usually 80% of the previous skip.
    • The world record number of skips is currently 88 consecutive skips, set by Kurt Steiner! Here’s a video documenting that world record.
    • A right-handed throw will result in skips that eventually veer to the right.

In our family, we have yet to make it into the Guinness Book of World Record or get invited to the world championships, but my son skipped a stone FOUR times on our last outing. He is stoked!

If going on a canoe trip with kids sounds fun, but intimidating or overwhelming, we’re here to show you just how much fun (and easy) it can be.  Today, we have outdoor adventurer and mom of two, Brianna from Adventure Families, here sharing the best beginner tips for canoeing with kids.  With her practical advice and packing tips, you’ll be expertly paddling your way across the water before you know it!

    As we pushed off the shore for our first family canoe trip of the summer, I held my breath. Our one-year-old daughter had protested loudly when I strapped on her life jacket, making me think we might be in for a miserable afternoon. While our son, Talon, had dozens of canoe trips under his size 4T belt, Lyra hadn’t yet been afloat as a busy toddler. We were not quite sure what we were getting into.

    Luckily, Lyra’s screams turned into delighted coos as our boat skimmed across the green water. She bounced between my legs, pointing at the birds and trees. From his perch in the center, Talon picked up his small paddle, proud to help propel us across the lake.

    Tips & Advice for Canoe Trips with Kids

    Got water? Just add kids

    My husband and I are water people. We’ve sailed across the Pacific Ocean, snorkeled around the Caribbean, paddled through the Everglades, and rafted down plenty of wild rivers. Once we had kids, we began integrating them into our adventures from the get-go.

    Canoes have been the perfect way for us to introduce our children to the water.

    Two years ago we bought a used 15-foot Coleman to explore lakes and rivers near our home in Montana. We’ve since added a small outboard motor and a sail, too. Sometimes we go out for an hour, and sometimes we pile in the camping gear and head out for a week.

    Reasons to canoe with kids

    There are so many amazing benefits of canoeing for kids and families. From spending time outdoors together to learning a skill, canoeing with your children is a great way to get active on the water at any age. Canoeing is something my family has enjoyed through many phases/seasons with (hopefully) many more years of canoeing in our future. Here are my top reasons why I’d recommend canoeing for your family, too.

    Teaching Kids how to Canoe and Paddle

    Low-risk and low-investment

    Canoeing is a low-risk and low-investment sport to try out. You can buy a good used canoe for ~$300, or rent one for ~$50/day to try it out first to see if it’s something your kids and family would like.  Canoes come in a wide range of sizes and styles, ranging from sleek wooden boats (which tend to be very expensive) to wide plastic boats and even inflatable versions. (Hint: these are the cheapest options and easiest to transport, but they don’t last as hard-shell canoes and require more time to inflate/deflate.) Some canoes are specifically-designed for speed or to handle whitewater, but all canoes will work on any calm water bodies you want to float.

    How to get started canoeing together as a family

    Tough and transportable

    Canoes can be stored in or outside, and are virtually maintenance-free! They’re also easy to transport, which means you can take them nearly anywhere. Most canoes only weigh 50-80 pounds, which is totally manageable for 1-2 adult(s). They can be placed upside-down on top of your car, no trailer needed.

    Pro tip: Use foam pool noodles to protect your vehicle’s roof/paint if you don’t have a roof rack.

    Aluminum and plastic boats are particularly good for kids and families. They are tough, washable, and more stable. When choosing a good canoe for kids, look for boats with flatter bottoms, which feel less “tippy.” As you might expect, it’s possible to tip over in a canoe, especially with squirmy kids around. Test the stability near the shore, wiggling hips and moving around in the boat to see how much side-to-side leeway you have before it feels uncomfortable.

    Pro tip: You can purchase stabilizer pontoon floats for your canoe, which make it super safe and allow you to walk around the boat or stand up to cast for fish.

    It doesn’t take long to learn how to paddle a canoe, even for young kids. You can watch videos online to see the basic steering strokes and rowing positions. Or if you’re a hands-on learner, play around in a small pond to figure it out on your own.

    Ready to try canoeing out this fall? Here are some helpful tips for beginners when canoeing with kids:

    1. Get excited! 

    Your happiness (or crankiness) is contagious to your children. Kids love seeing their parents get excited about things, particularly things that involve spending time with them. If you’re thrilled to be on the water, your kids will be, too. Spark excitement for this adventure in them by talking about your canoeing trips, the things you’ll do/see, the reasons why you love it and how much fun canoeing will be for them. Let them help plan the trip and help pack the canoe so the whole family is invested in the outing.

    2. Offer clear safety rules and rewards

    Before you launch, set a few clear safety rules: (1) don’t stand up without asking, (2) no leaning or jumping over the side, (3) keep life jackets on at all times, (4) no whining (ha! good luck with that one). Spending time together outside in a canoe is a reward in and of itself, but if your little ones need a bit of extra incentive to follow the safety rules, try offering a reward at the end of the day, such as a sweet treat or a movie.

    3. Designate a special spot for everyone

    Having a plan is half the battle. Before you get started, decide which adult will be in the stern (back seat) steering. This person will have less leeway to help manage the kids. The adult in the bow (front seat) can help paddle forward when needed, but can also take breaks easily. If you have a toddler, stand them between the adult’s legs in the bow where they can be the lookout and move around a little. Babies can be worn in a soft carrier. Older kids can sit on the center crossbars or a middle seat (if the canoe has one) to help paddle. Or kids can hunker down to play in the bottom of the boat. Letting the kids know exactly where they’ll be and what their “job” is, helps manage expectations.

    4. Take your time

    Like most outings with children in tow, the trip will probably take longer than you think. While you and your partner might want to race across the lake, the kids will enjoy it more if you take plenty of breaks. In fact, much of the joy in canoeing is playing on shore! Stop often at interesting spots to swim, have lunch, and explore islands or beaches you couldn’t get to without a boat. And don’t expect (or force!) the kids to add much (any) horsepower. Paddling is simply a fun diversion for them.

    5. Just remember, it gets easier

    As with any new activity with kids, canoeing as a family might be tough at first until everyone learns the ropes. This is doubly true if your kids are very young. But don’t give up! Remember that even if canoeing isn’t quite as fun as you’d hoped the first couple of times out, you’re building skills that will last you and your kids a lifetime. You’re creating wonderful bonding opportunities for years to come. And trust me, eventually, it will get easier!

    Canoeing trip packing list

    I’ve also put together a list of necessary, helpful and optional items that you may want to include in your bag on your first/next canoeing trip with kids. All of the items below should be placed in a waterproof bag since the bottom of the canoe usually gets wet from everyone’s shoes and dripping paddles. If you don’t have a dry bag, wrap your backpack or tote in a sturdy trash bag. Buckets also make for great storage in a canoe.

    Life jackets

    Everyone in the canoe needs to wear a life jacket. Even if the grown-ups are stellar swimmers. You’re the role models for your kids and safety starts and stops with you. Have kids practice wearing theirs before you get in the boat, so they get used to them.

    Pro tip: If you can’t find a comfortable jacket for your kiddo, try U.S. Coast Guard-approved water wings that are less bulky.

    Clothing

    Certain clothing will help out on your canoe trip with kids. Here’s a shortlist of must-pack clothing items. 

    • Sandals with straps or waterproof rain boots.
    • Sun hats and sun-protective clothing.
    • Rain gear, which can double as windbreakers.
    • Extra outfit for little kids who will likely get wet and muddy playing.

    Food and drinks

    Like all outings with kiddos, make sure you pack lots of easy-to-grab snacks to keep them occupied, fueled, and happy. We like to bring “special” drinks for the kids to make sure they stay hydrated in the sun: lemonade powder in their water bottles is a favorite.

    • Toilet paper if you’re not near public restrooms
    • Umbrella or pop-up tent for shade in the boat or on shore—perfect for passing rainstorms, too!
    • Seat pads or stadium-style folding seats
    • Rope to attach to the bow to help pull the boat on shore
    • Maps of the area you’re paddling
    • Tarp or blanket for picnics or for “beds” for kids in the bottom of the canoe
    • Extra paddle(s) for the kids: emergency paddles that are adjustable and light-weight work well

     Fun stuff

    • Binoculars (monoculars work best for you young kids—we love ours!)
    • Field guides
    • Fishing rod
    • Frisbee
    • Bubbles
    • Chalk (to draw on rocks or the inside of the boat—it washes right off!)
    • Bucket (have the kids fill it with rocks/sticks/leaves on shore, then throw them overboard one at a time while you paddle)
