  • Discovering the Joy of Family Challenges

    As parents, we often feel challenged by many things on a day-to-day basis. Just getting out the door can sometimes be a challenge. However, what about the fun challenges? The ones that are inspiring and promote goal-orientated thinking. The ones that push you to try hard, prioritize, and reach. There seems to be a rise on social media of every sort of hashtagged challenge you can think of, from reading a book every week for a year to walking 1000 miles. These are goals that we can set for ourselves, for our families, or even for our communities that can promote a sense of togetherness as we work towards a target. Today, Australian mum-of-two Jacqui from @tiny.adventures.often takes us on a journey of her own tried and tested challenges and explores the benefits of shared family goal setting.

    The allure of a year-long goal 

    Setting a long-term year-long goal can be highly appealing for several reasons, as it offers numerous benefits and advantages. Whether you set a goal or not, time passes either way. Wouldn’t it be great, at the end of 12 months (or earlier), to be able to celebrate reaching a goal? But why a year-long goal? What’s the allure of using such a long time frame?

    Well, there are quite a few. A year-long goal provides a clear and tangible target to work toward over an extended period, which is motivating, without short-term intense pressure. Year-long goals encourage gradual, sustainable progress. They often require consistent effort over time, promoting the development of good habits and routines.

    Year-long goals are typically well-defined and measurable, making it easier to track progress and evaluate success. This measurement can also provide a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction as milestones are achieved. This gives people a sense of purpose and direction, helping them stay committed to their objectives even when faced with challenges.

    Where it began for me

    For me, I began thinking about year-long goals and challenges around the time I got pregnant with my first child in 2016. When she arrived, I finished up work to be a full-time parent. Leaving the workforce to dedicate my life to keeping a tiny human alive left me with a gap when it came to ambition and personal fulfillment, though. I found that setting myself year-long challenges gave me something to work towards and take pride in. 

    In the early years, the challenges I set for myself were purely personal. I set a goal to spend 12 months off social media. I did 12 months with no refined sugar. I went 12 months without buying any new clothes. That sort of thing. These challenges were all difficult at various points throughout each year, and I did let myself have a small bit of leeway (like having a piece of wedding cake at a wedding or buying new underwear).

    Getting to the end of the year felt fantastically empowering. I did it! I was proud of myself. I felt better. Now, what else can I do?

    The goal of getting outside

    It wasn’t until 2022 that I stumbled across the 1000 Hours Outside movement, created by Ginny Yurich and vastly popular on social media. The challenge of spending 1000 hours outside with my kids over the space of a year intrigued me straight away. I was already outdoorsy, so I wasn’t sure whether 1000 hours would actually be a challenge or if I would be meeting that goal already without even realising it.

    Spending 1,000 hours outside in twelve months 

    Almost as soon as I found out about the challenge, I started logging the time my kids spent outside. In a move that might be slightly controversial, I didn’t actually tell my kids the goal that I had set for us. I thought that if I told them the goal, then any time I planned activities outside, they might accuse me of only doing it to ‘get our hours up,’ instead of for the joy and benefits of just being outside.

    I wanted them to appreciate each moment for what it was, not just for the destination. The goal was to spend more time outside for the sake of spending time outside, not hitting a number. In hindsight, I think I didn’t give them enough credit. Either way, it worked for us. I planned our days around getting the kids outside.

    Getting creative and gaining confidence

    Sometimes we’d go outside exploring and take our time. Sometimes we’d take the more mundane activities, like eating dinner or folding laundry, outside to rack up hours. I quickly realized that if I took the kids camping, we could easily get eleven or twelve-hour days outside! These were all things that we already enjoyed doing, but having the goal of 1000 hours at the end of the year inspired me, pushed me, to be more creative, and to really prioritise getting outside.

    And then I began noticing some changes. I noticed my kids becoming more physically confident. I also noticed our moods benefiting from being outside; the kids bickered among themselves a lot less when they weren’t confined to four walls. They showed much more initiative with their imaginative play, building cities out of rocks on riverbeds and money machines with dried leaves. Their creativity blossomed outside; they got better at unstructured free play, and they saw possibilities of play everywhere.  

    I also noticed my own confidence growing in my parenting and outdoor experiences. Where I may have been reluctant sometimes to try new things before, the challenge inspired me to take action and get outside. The more time I spent outside with the kids, the more confident I became. Time outside led to curiosity about our surroundings, which in turn led me to becoming more knowledgeable about the nature around us. We were all changing for the better.

    Reaching our year-long goal 

    It turned out that even though I considered us a very outdoorsy family, hitting that 1,000-hour goal for the year was more of a challenge than I expected. It didn’t help that we spent nearly a whole month with one or more of us down with RSV during that August. That month we only scraped thirty hours outdoors.

    February 18th was our start (and end) date though, which meant that we had nearly the whole of an Australian summer to get over the finish line. A week-long camping trip over New Year’s bumped us up considerably, and by the end of January (spent mostly at the beach), we’d reached the goal.

    Working towards a goal as a family 

    Setting a long-term shared goal as a family can offer a wide range of benefits and can strengthen the emotional bond among family members. Working towards goals together creates a sense of unity and shared purpose. It also encourages open and effective communication, as family members need to discuss their aspirations, priorities, and expectations, leading to better understanding, teamwork, and empathy. Setting and pursuing goals can teach kids important life skills such as planning, time management, problem-solving, and resilience.

    Benefits of family goals

    Even though I chose to work towards that goal, there are benefits to setting a shared goal together as a family, such as:

    • An increase in communication and teamwork, as you work together to achieve a common goal. 
    • Team building and bonding experience.
    • The process of choosing and setting goals often involves discussing values and principles that are important to the family. This can help reinforce shared values and ethical standards.
    • Inspiration and motivation. When everyone is working towards the same goal and aligned in their thinking, it is easier to stay on track and inspire each other. 
    • Creating memories by trying new things together. 
    • Family goals related to health and wellness, such as exercising together or eating healthier meals, can encourage the development of healthy habits that benefit everyone.
    • Pursuing family goals often requires spending quality time together. This can strengthen relationships and create lasting memories.
    • There’s often increased awareness of each other’s needs and interests. When families brainstorm together different challenges and ways to meet their challenges, each family member will bring to the table things that are important to them. This can lead to everyone being aware (and having to take into account) others’ needs. 
    • Flexibility and adaptability. Family goals can be adjusted and adapted over time to accommodate changing circumstances, schedules, and evolving family dynamics.
    • There is a joint sense of accomplishment and joy when the goal is reached (and a lot of fun celebrating)! Achieving shared family goals creates a sense of achievement, pride, and a boost of self-esteem among family members.

    Making the decision to do a family challenge

    Embarking on a year-long family challenge can be an exciting and rewarding experience. If this is something that you want to try, you’ll want to begin by initiating a family discussion. Gather all family members together to talk about the idea of a year-long challenge. Make sure everyone has a chance to express their thoughts, concerns, and ideas.

    Next, you’ll want to clearly define the purpose or objective of the challenge. What do you hope to achieve as a family? This could be related to health, fitness, learning, hobbies, or personal development. Based on the purpose, you can set clear and specific goals for the challenge. These goals should be achievable within a year and measurable so that progress can be tracked. 

    Finally, you’ll want to create a plan for tackling the challenge and establish any rules or guidelines that you want to include. This may mean you’ll need to consider the daily, weekly, or monthly activities or tasks required, put together a timeline specifying when you will start and finish the challenge, procure any necessary resources or equipment, and have a contingency plan for obstacles or setbacks. If the challenge involves rules or guidelines, make sure you define them and communicate them to all family members. This could include how progress will be measured/tracked, what constitutes success, and any consequences for not meeting goals.

    Encourage kids to help choose a family challenge 

    Kids love to feel valued for their opinions and for the role they play in the family model. Encouraging them to come up with their own ideas around setting a family challenge, and choosing one together, will give them even more motivation to achieve the goal.

    At the dinner table recently, I talked to my kids about our next family challenge. I gave them a few ideas, and we talked about our interests, what was important to our family, and what was coming up for us in the year.

    Together, we decided to work towards a goal of spending 20 nights camping together over the next year. I love this choice! Both kids were excited about all the options and places we could camp. My daughter has asked for more time spent in a standard tent rather than our usual rooftop tent, which I think will be a nice way to mix up our routine. I’m already looking forward to all the lifelong memories that this challenge will create for us and the stories that will come out of these 20 nights!

    Ideas for year-long family challenges 

    When it comes to setting a family challenge, the options and possibilities are endless. You could design a family challenge around whatever hobby, activity, or interest you have. You could choose to focus on perfecting one thing, or an open-ended challenge that gives you flexibility to do all kinds of things! There’s no right or wrong answer; no one size fits all challenge. 

    If you’re having trouble thinking of a challenge that resonates with you, consider the following ideas as a sounding board to get you brainstorming. Just add the number/goal that you think would be a good challenge for your family.

    • The Humans Outside 365 Challenge –  spend 20 minutes outside every single day for a year
    • Books read per month or year – choose a number of books to read each month or a total number to read over the course of the year
    • 52 Hike Challenge – one hike per week, for an entire year
    • 100 Blue Hours Challenge – spend 100 hours in blue spaces over the course of a year (created by Run Wild My Child Team Member Bethany)
    • State parks challenge – visit all the state parks in your state in a year 
    • Pounds of rubbish picked up from public parks and beaches – set a goal to pick up a specific amount of trash from public spaces over the year
    • Meals eaten outside – set a goal to eat a set number of meals together outside (picnic style, over the campfire, on a patio, on the trail, etc.)
    • Miles walked, hiked, cycled, or paddled – choose a number to hit over the year
    • Alphabet adventures challenge – go through the alphabet and choose adventures and activities that correspond with each day’s letter (A = aquarium, B = bike ride, C = camping)
    • Times you visit a new place – set a goal to get out of your comfort zone and visit some new places this year
    • Hours spent volunteering in the community – set a goal to spend time doing service projects, acts of kindness, volunteering, etc. as a family
    • New skills learnt/attempted – set a goal to see how many new outdoor skills you can learn over the course of a year
    • Geocaching quest – challenge your family to find a certain number of caches over the year
    • Birdwatching expedition – develop an interest in birdwatching and aim to spot a certain number of bird species throughout the year (keep a family birdwatching journal to record your findings)
    • Nature photography challenge – take up nature photography as a family hobby and aim to capture the beauty of your outdoor experiences and create a family album or calendar
    • Project 365 – take one photo a day of your kids (and/or your outdoor adventures) every day for a year (you’ll be amazed how much your photography improves)
    • Year of the moon challenge – observe and connect with the moon during its full and new phases over the course of a year through stargazing, learning about lunar phases, and each month’s name (e.g. Wolf Moon, Strawberry Moon) and meaning

    The possibilities are endless!

    Celebration ideas for when you reach your goal

    With family challenges, the most fun part is the journey and working towards the goal together. However, the celebration at the end makes it all the more worthwhile. This is a great opportunity to have a lot of fun and an excuse for a family party.

    It’s also a great idea to start planning the celebration at the start of your goal planning, so everyone has it in the back of their minds as they work towards achieving their goal. Here are a few ideas to celebrate the end of a family challenge: 

    • Make a cake in the theme of your challenge (for example, a bicycle cake for a cycling challenge)
    • Each family member dresses up as their favourite book character and makes a meal from their favourite book (for a book-themed challenge)
    • A “glamping” experience as a treat for a camping-themed challenge
    • A trip to somewhere the kids have wanted to go for a long time but haven’t had the opportunity
    • Have a movie night, with the movie related to the theme of your challenge
    • Have a family award ceremony and hand out awards for each member’s accomplishments
    • Make a family donation to a charity related to the theme of your challenge
    • Have your kids invite their friends over for a celebratory party
    • Let your kids pick out new books at the book store, or new camping equipment at the outdoors centre

    Extra tips for more learning through challenges

    For parents who are homeschooling or anyone just wanting to add another layer to the family challenge, consider these ideas to incorporate more areas for learning opportunities. 

    • Have your kids journal their experiences with each step they take towards achieving their goal.
    • Ask local businesses or members of the community to sponsor your challenge. Once you’ve reached the end of the challenge, they might be willing to donate to a local charity on your behalf.
      • Alternatively, the kids could raise money for a charity along the way. 
    • At the very start of the challenge, have your kids write down what they think might be the hardest part, and the easiest part, of the challenge. At the end, have the kids read out their predictions and see how close they were to reality. 
    • Loan books from your local library on the theme of your challenge, or invite guest experts to share their knowledge with your family. This could be a friend, neighbor, or professional in a field related to your challenge.
    • Set aside a designated time each week for family meetings. Discuss what you’ve learned, share interesting facts, and plan future learning activities.
    • Assign family members topics to research and present to the rest of the family (or places to explore, or where you should camp, etc.). This encourages public speaking, research skills, and persuasion. 

    By infusing your family challenges with learning opportunities, you not only achieve your challenge goals but also foster a culture of continuous learning, curiosity, and personal development within your family. These experiences can create lasting memories and a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

    Including friends and your wider community 

    Challenges don’t have to be confined to your immediate family. Once you’ve landed on an idea, why not put it out there for friends and family to join in if they want to? Including friends and extended family members in your year-long outdoor family challenges can enhance the experience, promote social bonding, and create lasting memories.

    The team bonding could extend to cousins, school buddies, and even grandparents. You could put a notice on your local online community noticeboard, and if enough people want to join in, you could even create a new group where you can inspire each other and share your achievements. The more people on board with the challenge, the bigger the celebration can be at the end!

    Feel free to collaborate on specific challenges or activities with friends and family. For example, you could plan joint camping trips, hiking expeditions, or outdoor fitness sessions. These could be monthly or quarterly gatherings dedicated to challenge-related activities. You could also organize friendly competitions or challenges between your family and another family or group of friends. This could include sports, games, or outdoor races. Or, dedicate specific days or weekends throughout the year as “Family Challenge Days” where friends and extended family are encouraged to participate. Plan a range of outdoor activities and games related to helping your family meet your goal.

    How to turn a failed challenge into a win

    While it’d be great to always be able to complete your family challenges, that may not be the case. Unexpected circumstances may come up causing you to fall short of your goal, or something may happen during the year to derail you or shift your goals. That certainly doesn’t mean the experiment was a failure. Even when a year-long family challenge falls short of completion, you should recognize that the journey itself is a resounding win. The memories created throughout the challenge, whether they involve laughter during outdoor adventures, heartwarming moments shared around a campfire, or the resilience displayed in the face of setbacks, are invaluable treasures that will be cherished for years to come. These shared experiences strengthen family bonds, forge deep connections, and build a reservoir of shared stories that become part of your family’s unique history.

    Moreover, a failed challenge can often lead to the establishment of enduring traditions and habits. It’s an opportunity to reflect on what went right and what could be improved, allowing you to adapt and continue refining your family’s approach to future challenges. The persistence and determination demonstrated in the face of adversity are powerful life lessons for every family member, fostering personal growth, resilience, and a spirit of perseverance. In the end, while the ultimate goal may not have been achieved, the immeasurable value of the journey, the traditions formed, and the growth experienced make every family challenge, whether successful or not, an undeniable triumph.

    Making a family challenge a tradition 

    If you loved your year-long family challenge and want to try another one the next year, you may be onto something! Your year-long family challenge could easily turn into a cherished tradition that evolves with your family’s interests and needs. Setting personal challenges has been my tradition every time New Year’s Eve comes around (not that I think any challenge has to be tied to a calendar year), but now I love the idea of bringing this to our family and getting the kids involved. 

    To begin, take a good look at how last year’s challenge went – what went right, what was hard, what would you like to do differently. Use this feedback as the foundation for selecting the next year’s challenge. By involving every family member in the decision-making process, you ensure that the challenge aligns with everyone’s interests and aspirations.

    As you embark on each new challenge, infuse it with elements that promote togetherness and create lasting memories. Incorporate traditions and rituals unique to your family, such as a special kickoff event or a symbolic gesture at the challenge’s conclusion. These rituals will help solidify the challenge as an annual tradition that carries emotional significance.

    Having successfully completed the 1000 Hours Outside challenge as a family, I got excited to bring my kids into the tradition as well. Although we aim to keep up the tradition and mentality of spending as much time as we can outside, I thought it was time for a new challenge for us. That’s why we discussed it as a family and decided on our new camping challenge. I’m SO excited to start working towards our goal!

    Tips for visiting the California redwoods with kids

    Visiting the California Redwoods

    We live in an incredibly large and beautiful world. There are more amazing places to visit than there are days in our lives, and deciding where to spend our few precious vacation days is a choice I don’t make lightly. You want somewhere epic, but not overwhelmed by too many people. You want something memorable, but without having to fight for parking.

    One place that I find myself returning to time and again is the Redwoods of Northern California. I hope as you read through this post, you will begin to understand the reason why my heart longs to view this stunning scenery. And if you have never experienced redwood trees in person, I hope you will want to!

    What are redwoods?

    Let’s begin our expedition with a little background knowledge about redwoods. Redwood trees, the towering giants of the plant kingdom, are a living testament to the awe-inspiring power of nature. These magnificent trees, scientifically known as Sequoia sempervirens, are native to the west coast of North America, particularly thriving in the coastal regions of California. Redwoods are celebrated not only for their sheer size, with some reaching heights of over 350 feet and diameters of 20 feet but also for their remarkable longevity. Redwood trees can live to be thousands of years old.

    Part of the reason they are able to live so long is because of their strong, thick bark. Redwood bark provides protection against pests, fires, and diseases. You might think that redwood trees have deep roots in order to live so long, but that is not the case. They have a shallow root system that intertwines with other redwood trees nearby, and the trees support each other against strong winds, storms, and floods. We can learn a lot from a redwood tree!

    The importance of redwood trees

    The importance of redwood trees cannot be overstated. Beyond their immense size and longevity, redwoods play a vital role in our ecosystem. Their immense canopies provide habitat for countless species of wildlife, while their root systems stabilize the soil and prevent erosion. These trees also act as carbon sinks, absorbing significant amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and helping mitigate the effects of climate change. Furthermore, the redwoods have cultural and spiritual significance for Indigenous communities, and they hold a special place in the hearts of all who encounter their majestic presence.

    Fostering a connection to nature

    Beyond their ecological and cultural significance, the redwoods provide a unique opportunity for people to connect with nature on a profound level, fostering a sense of humility, wonder, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. Preserving these extraordinary trees is not just an environmental imperative; it’s a commitment to safeguarding the soul-stirring beauty and ecological balance of our planet.

    John Steinbeck wrote of these trees, “The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. From them come silence and awe. They are ambassadors from another time.”

    Best places to see redwood trees

    Redwoods thrive in the cool, moist climate and can primarily be found along the coast of California, from southern Oregon to central California. Northern California has several places where you can experience the redwoods. My favorites are Redwood National and State Park, Julia Pfiefer Burns State Park, Yosemite National Park, Muir Woods National Monument, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, and Humboldt Redwoods State Park. There is even a redwood or two in Griffith Park in Los Angeles County. 

    As a side note, as you’re walking through the redwood forests, you might notice some familiar scenery. Popular films such as Jurassic Park: The Lost World and Star Wars Return of the Jedi were all filmed in the Redwoods of Northern California.

    Recently my family and I spent some time in Northern California, amongst the redwoods. Our first stop was Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. We camped here for several nights in the Elk Prairie Campground, named for the adjacent field where the elk are frequently seen. This campground is about an hour south of the California/Oregon border.

    This campground has showers, running water, flushing toilets, and several loops to choose your campsite from. There is also wood available for purchase at the campground. Many trails running through the campground will take you through breathtaking redwood forests. Photographs really cannot capture a redwood tree fully because of the height of these beauties, but this was my best attempt!

    The redwood forests of Northern California are a biodiversity hotspot, teeming with a remarkable array of flora and fauna. These ancient and towering giants create a unique microclimate that supports a rich diversity of plant life. Beneath the canopy of the redwoods, you’ll find a lush understory filled with ferns, mosses, and a variety of wildflowers.

    Additionally, redwood forests are home to a plethora of bird species, from majestic owls like the northern spotted owl to the colorful and melodic songbirds such as the varied thrush. The canopy itself is inhabited by several arboreal mammals like flying squirrels and tree-dwelling salamanders, showcasing the intricate web of life sustained by these towering trees.

    This intricate web of life, from the smallest fern to the grandest elk, illustrates the interconnectedness of the redwood forest ecosystem and the critical importance of preserving these ancient groves for future generations to marvel at and study. The redwood forests of Northern California serve as a living testament to the wonders of nature and a reminder of the urgent need to protect and conserve our planet’s precious biodiversity.

    One of the most iconic inhabitants of these forests is the banana slug, a large, bright yellow gastropod that serves as a critical decomposer, breaking down organic matter and recycling nutrients. My kids had a great time exploring the trails, playing at the amphitheater, and looking for critters near the creek. We were so excited to finally find a banana slug! Coming from Southern California, banana slugs were a new discovery for my kiddos. And isn’t “banana slug” such a fitting name for these guys? They could almost pass for a real banana if you ask me!

    If you’re only going to be in the area for a short time, my number one recommendation would be to visit Fern Canyon. Exploring Fern Canyon with kids is like stepping into the pages of a storybook where ancient redwoods and lush greenery create a magical, primeval world. Located within Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in Northern California, Fern Canyon is a place of wonderment that captivates young hearts and sparks their sense of adventure. As you and your children venture into the canyon, you’ll be enveloped by towering walls covered in ferns of all shapes and sizes, offering a verdant, fairy-tale atmosphere that feels straight out of a fantasy movie.

    You will need a permit to hike Fern Canyon, and you can get that here. The road getting to the trailhead at Gold Bluffs Beach is not all paved, but we were able to make it in our minivan without any problems. If there has been recent heavy rain, I would recommend bringing a vehicle with 4-wheel drive. The trailhead doesn’t look like anything special, and there are bathrooms, picnic tables, and beach access. The real beauty comes once you get on the trail.

    Walking through the shallow creek that winds its way through the canyon becomes a delightful game of exploration for kids, as they hop from rock to rock and splash in the crystal-clear waters. The towering redwoods on either side create a cathedral-like setting, where the filtered sunlight plays hide-and-seek with the ferns.

    Not surprisingly, there are 5 different types of ferns in this canyon. They start out only on the ground, but as you continue to walk, you’ll start to notice that the walls of the canyon are also teeming with ferns and other greenery. It’s like walking through a magical place unlike anywhere else. Streams run through the canyon, so you’ll want to wear appropriate footwear for mud and water.

    What to expect in Fern Canyon

    Chances are, if you’re in Humboldt County there will be precipitation at some point as well. We stopped quite a few times along the trail to play in the water, climb on the fallen logs, look at fun rocks, and just enjoy the beauty around us. The 1.1 mile loop took us about an hour to complete.

    Fern Canyon provides an excellent opportunity to introduce your children to the wonders of nature, teaching them about ecosystems, plant life, and the importance of conservation in a hands-on, memorable way. As you and your kids traverse this enchanting canyon, you’ll create lasting memories that foster a deep appreciation for the natural world and the ancient redwoods that call it home.

    Sue-Meg State Park

    A short drive from Fern Canyon is Sue-Meg State Park, formerly known as Patrick’s Point State Park. Exploring Sue-Meg State Park is an enchanting journey into a pristine natural wonderland where the beauty of the outdoors takes center stage. As you meander along its well-maintained trails, you’ll be immersed in lush forests that change with the seasons, providing a kaleidoscope of colors and scents. The park’s pristine lakes and serene waterways are great for kayaking and fishing, while the gentle rustling of leaves overhead and the sweet songs of birds create a symphony of nature that soothes the soul. Whether you’re hiking, picnicking, or simply savoring the tranquility of this hidden gem, Sue-Meg State Park is a sanctuary where you can reconnect with the natural world and savor moments of peace and serenity.

    Sue-Meg also has a small replica of a native village. I find it incredibly interesting to read about how the native peoples lived in the area, especially since they still have a strong influence in Humboldt County and many reservations in the area.

    Located inside this state park is Agate Beach Campground. While we didn’t stay here, I did note that there are cabins available, so I added it to my list of places to stay in the future. Five minutes along a fairly steep trail from Agate Beach Campground will give you access to Agate Beach.

    This beach is filled with millions of tiny stones, and the entire beach is one huge treasure hunt. Many agates (naturally occurring translucent stones) are hidden among the ordinary stones at this beach. I could spend hours digging around looking for them! If you have a kiddo who is into rocks or hunting for treasures, you can get that you’ll spend a lot of time at this beach.

    McKinleyville

    As a special treat for our kids, we booked the most amazing accommodations in a private redwood forest with creeks and a waterfall for one night of our trip. You can book your stay at these adorable, rustic cabins here. Located in the heart of the Humboldt Coastal Redwoods, these cabins were so lovely for our family. 

    The road getting to the cabins was treacherous for our little minivan, but if you have 4 wheel-drive, you should be fine. It was so private, and waking up in the middle of the redwoods with the stream running below was nothing short of a dream. Our kids loved every minute of our time there, and we wish we could have stayed longer. It was a memory we will never forget!

    Redwood Park in Arcata

    Making your way south from McKinleyville, your next stop should be Redwood Park in Arcata. Arcata is home to Cal Poly-Humboldt, a great university for anyone wanting to go into agriculture. Can you imagine exploring the old-growth redwood forests as part of your higher education? I’m feeling tempted to go back to school just thinking about it!

    Exploring Redwood Park in Arcata is like stepping into a living fairy tale, where towering giants of the natural world, the majestic coast redwood trees, reign supreme. This place is a true hidden gem. As you wander along the well-maintained trails, you’ll find yourself dwarfed by trees that can reach heights of over 300 feet, their canopies forming a cathedral-like ambiance that filters the sunlight to create a soft, ethereal glow.

    Wildlife and biodiversity

    The park’s lush undergrowth, moss-covered fallen logs, and babbling creeks add to its enchantment, while wildlife sightings, including banana slugs and varied bird species, enhance the sense of connection to nature. Redwood Park in Arcata is a sanctuary where you can walk among giants, listen to the whispers of the forest, and rediscover the profound beauty and tranquility of the natural world.

     Even the parking lot of the park is surrounded by towering redwood trees. The minute you begin walking on any of the plentiful trails, you’re immersed in the sights and smells of these old giants. Don’t forget to check under the leaves of the redwood sorrel (looks like a clover), because you might find a color there that you weren’t expecting.

    We were lucky enough to happen upon some rope swings during our time in Redwood Park. These whimsical contraptions blend the simple joys of childhood with the majesty of the redwood forest, offering fun for all ages. For the kids, it’s an opportunity to experience the thrill of swinging amidst towering giants, feeling the wind rush past as they soar through the dappled sunlight. It’s a chance to channel their inner Tarzan or Jane while developing coordination and balance.

    Everyone in our family took turns swinging high into the forest on the ropes. The kids all had a blast, so much so that my daughter said that the rope swing was her favorite part of our whole trip! The kids could have stayed and played here for the rest of the day, but we had a couple of other destinations to discover before the end of the day.

    Eureka

    Heading even farther south from Arcata is one of the bigger cities of Humboldt County, and the heart of the Humboldt Redwoods, Eureka. Known as the “Queen of the West Coast,” Eureka boasts a stunning backdrop of ancient redwood forests and the Pacific Ocean. The city’s Victorian architecture, exemplified by the Carson Mansion and numerous other well-preserved structures, adds an air of timeless elegance to its streets. 

    The city’s waterfront is a hub of activity, offering opportunities for kayaking, bird-watching, and scenic strolls along the boardwalk. Beyond its natural and architectural splendor, Eureka is a community known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It’s a place where local businesses flourish, and a sense of pride in environmental stewardship runs deep.

    The city hosts a variety of festivals and events throughout the year, celebrating its rich history, diverse culture, and the stunning landscape that surrounds it. The Eureka Inn is a functioning hotel with old-world decor and a retro pool area. The Carson Mansion is no longer open to the public, but you can walk past and admire the intricate Victorian building on your way to visit Old Town Eureka.

    Eureka’s Old Town district, with its cobblestone streets and vibrant storefronts, invites visitors to step back in time and explore a thriving arts and culture scene. The entire section of Old Town Eureka is on the national registry of historic places. As you walk around you will notice that the Carson Mansion is only one of a large number of beautiful Victorian buildings. If you want to save your steps for later, there are also horse-drawn carriages in Old Town that would be happy to give you a lift.

    Sequoia Park

    My favorite destination in Eureka is Sequoia Park. Spanning over 67 acres, this park is a haven for locals and visitors alike. The park’s centerpiece is a stunning stand of towering coast redwoods, some reaching heights of over 250 feet, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere that invites quiet contemplation and awe. Meandering through the park’s network of trails, visitors can encounter majestic trees, lush ferns, and meandering creeks that together evoke a sense of tranquility and wonder.

    Sequoia Park is not only a place of natural beauty but also a hub of community activity, featuring a duck pond, picnic areas, a children’s playground, and a popular gazebo where concerts and events are held. 

    This park is located directly next to the Sequoia Park Zoo, which recently added this fantastic skywalk. For a fee, you can take a walk 100 feet up into the redwoods and experience the forest from a completely different perspective. We unfortunately were not able to do the skywalk on this trip, but I have it on my list for next time!

    Humboldt State Redwoods and Richardson Grove

    Our final night in the land of the redwoods was another amazing one. Driving south on Highway 101 will take you to the entrance to The Avenue of the Giants. This is a windy stretch of highway that is lined on both sides of the road with beautiful redwoods and lush green ferns. Along the road, there are campgrounds, trailheads, gift shops, several state parks, and even Confusion Hill. This is a fun stop where you can walk through the Gravity House and have other wacky adventures.

    We drove south through Humboldt Redwoods State Park and camped at Huckleberry Campground at Richardson Grove State Park. This park is a pristine natural gem that showcases the grandeur of ancient redwood forests. Covering 1,800 acres along the South Fork Eel River, the park is renowned for its magnificent old-growth redwoods, some towering over 300 feet in height and dating back centuries. As you wander through the park’s shaded trails, you’ll be enveloped in a world of towering giants, lush ferns, and tranquil streams.

    Huckleberry Campground

    Huckleberry Campground at Richardson Grove State Park is a tranquil retreat beneath the towering canopy of ancient redwoods. Located along the banks of the meandering South Fork Eel River, this campground offers a serene and picturesque setting for nature enthusiasts and campers seeking a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

    The campground features well-maintained sites for tents and RVs, many of which are tucked away in the shade of massive redwood trees, providing a sense of privacy and immersion in the natural world. With access to hiking trails, swimming holes, and the calming sounds of the river, Huckleberry Campground is a perfect base for exploring the awe-inspiring beauty of Richardson Grove State Park and experiencing the magic of the redwoods up close. In the summer, you can access a fun swimming hole in the river just a short walk from the visitor’s center.

    The diversity of a California road trip

    From Richardson Grove, it’s about a 3.5-hour drive to get to San Francisco. That’s material for another day! The entire state of California has so much to offer us as outdoor enthusiasts. The landscape is extremely diverse, from the northern end of the state to the southern end. While you may think of California as sunny, sandy beaches with surfers galore, the northern half of the state has a completely different vibe. You certainly don’t want to swim in the ocean water of Northern California without an extremely thick wetsuit. 

    If you’re looking for a more serene, less crowded vacation destination, I hope you will take Northern California into consideration. If you’re heading north up towards Oregon, you’ll definitely want to check out this West Coast road trip post about NorCal and Oregon.  No matter what time of year you visit, be sure to pack a jacket and prepare for amazement!

    Where to stay in Chickasaw Country

    There are plenty of hotels, rental homes, and unique places to stay in Chickasaw Country with kids. But, the best place to stay is the Chickasaw Retreat and Conference Center, in Sulphur, Oklahoma. The resort sits on top of a mountain, with panoramic views of the surrounding hillsides. There are walking trails around the property that also offer incredible views of nature around the resort. For dining, there is an onsite pizza restaurant open Thursday through Saturday nights.

    Chickasaw Retreat and Conference Center

    The Chickasaw Retreat and Conference Center also has a full fitness center, including a spa, indoor walking track, indoor pool and hot tub, steam room, and sauna! It was such a treat to be able to work out in a fully equipped gym before we took off for our daily adventures. The pool has a wall of windows facing west, and it is the perfect place to watch the sunset! The pool is open until 8 pm, and it’s a great way to let the kids burn off any excess energy while you enjoy the sunset views on the mountaintop.

    CRCC also has spacious and comfortable rooms, including some with a kitchenette and balcony. The balcony is a peaceful place to enjoy some coffee from the in-room Keurig coffee maker.

    This is the best place to stay for a centrally located base while you explore all that Chickasaw Country has to enjoy. It’s a short drive into the town of Sulphur, OK, and a great launch point to explore all of the area.

    Outdoor adventures for kids in Chickasaw Country

    Chickasaw National Recreation Area

    The city of Sulphur, Oklahoma, sits right next to Chickasaw National Recreation Area, and should be your first stop. This park is the oldest national park in Oklahoma, and one of the few national parks in the Midwest. At the time of its founding, the reservation, later national park, was located in Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation. On March 17, 1976, Platt National Park was combined with the Arbuckle Recreation Area and additional lands and renamed. 

    It’s located within the Arbuckle mountain range. The Chickasaw National Recreation Area features a wide range of outdoor activities and experiences, such as swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, observing nature and scenery, hunting, camping, and picnicking. The park is filled with mineral springs, natural pools, and hiking trails. It’s located within Chickasaw Nation.

    This is a great place to visit in Chickasaw Country with kids!

    Travertine Nature Center

    The Travertine Nature Center straddles Travertine Creek near the northeast boundary of the park and serves as the park’s main visitor center. The nature center contains a variety of exhibits, as well as live reptiles, amphibians, fish, and an interactive learning area for visitors of all ages. Exhibits highlight the forest/prairie ecosystem of southern Oklahoma, the significant water resources of Chickasaw National Recreation Area, geology and hydrology, and the diversity of wildlife and plants located within the park.

    There are over twenty miles of hiking trails in and around the national park. Some of the trails are wide and smooth, and some are even paved and great for strollers. Nearly all of the trails at Chickasaw National Recreation Area are pet friendly, except the Springs Trails leading to Antelope and Buffalo Springs. The Rock Creek Multi-Use trails are more challenging and offer longer hiking options, ranging from 2 to 5 miles.

    TIP: head to Bromide Hill early in the morning to take in a gorgeous sunrise view, or for sunset to watch the sky change colors. For a full list of important things to take hiking, check out this post! Note: the Bromide Hill overlook is a steep cliff with no barricades, and I wouldn’t recommend this overlook with small children. It’s an easy hike, but a very steep cliff.

    Springs and creeks at Chickasaw National Recreation Area

    One thing that is unique about the Chickasaw National Recreation area is all of the water! You may not expect it, but the land is full of fresh, cold water springs. And I do mean COLD! Of the park’s 9,888 square acres, water covers 2,409 acres! 

    Travertine Creek, the most popular place to play, is a freezing 65 degrees year-round. But, when it’s 100 degrees outside, that water feels amazing! If you’re visiting this National Park on a hot day, definitely plan to spend some time in the cold water (and bring everyone a change of clothes!).

    Little Niagra Falls

    Little Niagara Falls is a very popular and picturesque swimming hole on Travertine Creek. It’s a natural swimming area deep enough to jump in from the surrounding rocks and is full of minnows! We even spotted a turtle and a larger bluegill. Travertine Creek is open for swimming and wading everywhere downstream of Little Niagara Falls.

    Other places to swim and play include Rock Lake, Veterans Lake, and Lake of the Arbuckles.

    Unique wildlife

    Chickasaw National Recreation Area is home to a wide variety of unique wildlife, including a small bison herd. The natural springs in the park were at one time a popular spot for large herds to cool off and get a drink. But, the increase of settlements in the 1800s led to the destruction of habitat.

    Bison made a return to a protected area in the park in the 1920s, thanks to a small herd brought over from the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. The Veterans Trail is the best place to view the bison when they’re housed in the east pasture. When they are in the Western pasture, they can be seen from the designated bison viewing area (the Bison Viewpoint turnoff on Highway 177).

    Another opportunity to see some unique wildlife in Chickasaw Country with kids is at Crossed Arrows Alpaca Farm and Fiber Mill. This charming farm is located in Duncan, Oklahoma.

    They raise alpacas and sheep for their wool and have an on-site fiber mill! You can call ahead to schedule a tour of the farm for a great learning opportunity! They have a store onsite where you can buy products made with wool from their animals. They also have a unique boutique downtown at the Duncan Tower Shoppes. The shop also carries their own grassfed beef! Or, you can shop online for wool items.

    Indoor adventures, museums, and learning experience in Chickasaw Country

    There are also plenty of indoor adventures to enjoy in Chickasaw Country with kids. The area hosts several museums, including the incredible 184-acre Chickasaw Cultural Center. You can easily spend several days exploring all of the museums in the area, from First American culture to Western history museums; it’s a complete learning experience.

    Chickasaw National Capital in Tishomingo

    The city of Tishomingo is also where you’ll find the historic capitol of the Chickasaw Nation. The building served as the central government for the Chickasaw Nation until 1906, when Oklahoma received statehood. It’s now preserved as a museum that’s open to the public. The building itself is beautiful and made from amber rose granite, harvested from a local quarry. Take your time to walk around the building and observe the grounds. There are some statues worth seeing!

    Inside, you can go on a tour and learn about how the Chickasaw Nation fought to preserve their culture and their independence. Be sure to read the signage and exhibit displays. There are many events throughout the year at the capitol building, the largest being the Chickasaw Annual Festival which takes place yearly at the end of September. There are exhibits and demonstrations, and it culminates with the State of the Union address by the Chickasaw governor.

    Chickasaw Council House Museum

    Just next door to the capitol building is another important historic site. The original Chickasaw Nation meeting house is preserved inside this building. You walk around the log structure as well as observe inside. There are displays with important heritage and history throughout the museum, and it’s well worth a guided tour.

    Another room displays honors and contributions by notable Chickasaw Nation members, including TeAta and Pearl, both of whom have movies about their stories. The Council House Museum is a wonderful place to visit in Chickasaw Country with kids because it also houses one of the largest collections of Chickasaw artifacts and has a wonderful art gallery and gift shop.

    Chickasaw Bank Museum

    This historic bank in Johnston County, Oklahoma, was the original bank used by the Chickasaw Nation. Governor Robert Harris signed a bill in 1897 for the new bank building, to be constructed using the same stone as the capitol. The stone actually came from a nearby quarry also owned by Harris.

    The bank was ruined in 1909 when an employee embezzled $40,000! It has since been restored and is now a museum. Inside, the space is set up how it would have been when serving as a bank in the early 1900s. It’s a beautiful building and has exhibits throughout the interior. The bank is a short walk from the capitol building.

    Chickasaw Cultural Center

    The Chickasaw Cultural Center is an incredible museum. It is housed on 184 acres in Sulphur, Oklahoma. The grounds are spectacular, with beautiful gardens and sculptures throughout. Start your day at the Chickasha Poya Exhibit Center, where you’ll learn about the history of the Chickasaw Nation.

    The Chickasaw Cultural Center experience begins at the welcome center. Here you can find helpful directions, schedules, brochures and maps. Also located inside the welcome center is a selection of Chickasaw-produced books and reference materials available for purchase.

    Be sure to watch the film and enter through the Spirit Forest. After the forest, you walk through a timeline of history, including the origin story of the Chickasaw Nation, to what happened with European contact, and then removal and the re-establishment of their sovereignty. This includes the story of the defeat and attack of Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto.

    After the indoor exhibits, head outside to the Chikasha Inchokka’ Traditional Village. There you get to see a meeting house, summer home, winter home, and many other features of 1700’s era Chickasaw life. You can also learn about the corn crib and how food was stored. The gardens are beautiful, and you can see examples of three sister’s plantings. The garden outside of the village fence is even larger and features a sensory garden.

    A unique experience at the Chickasaw Cultural Center

    Something that makes a visit to the Chickasaw Cultural Center extra special is watching the daily stomp dance demonstrations. You will get to enjoy the traditional song and dance of the Chickasaw tribe, and learn a little about the Chickasaw language. But, you will also be invited to dance along with them! This is an incredibly unique experience that you will not experience anywhere else. We recommend embracing this because the Snake Dance isn’t something you’ll soon forget.

    Traditional Chickasaw foods

    You will need to plan a full day to experience all that the cultural center has to offer. There is a cafe on site called Aaimpa Cafe and they serve traditional Chickasaw foods like pashofa as well as classics like burgers. The salmon and wild rice is gluten free and delicious!     Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Chickasaw Country

    This museum is another must-see in Chickasaw Country with kids. The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan, Oklahoma, celebrates the history, art, and heritage of the cattle trail, the American cowboy, and the American West. It is a phenomenal immersive learning experience. Plan to spend a few hours at this museum. There are two shows, one in a 4D theater and one featuring animatronic cowboys. 

    The Chisholm Trail museum is great for younger children and has lots of hands-on learning experiences, including a recreated early 1800s general store to play in. Kids can also try their hand at cattle roping from a real saddle. The museum also has an extraordinary art gallery featuring many artists, with multiple art forms, including sculpture, multimedia, and paintings.

    Educational opportunities at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center

    Chisholm Trail Heritage Center specializes in education. They have a wide range of programming available throughout the year, for multiple ages groups. They can do field trips for schools as well as homeschools, with different topics. Educational trips can range from two to four hours and can focus on things like writing or art. If you’re not able to make it there in person, you can watch their Facebook Live videos, where they share a different topic each week!

    Toy and Action Figure Museum

    Would you believe that there’s a museum in Chickasaw Country that’s guaranteed to make kids and adults happy? The Toy and Action Figure Museum in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, is a must-see.

    The museum began in 2000, thanks to toy designer, artist, and collector Kevin Stark. If you get a chance to tour the museum with Kevin, do it! The stories about the toys, some of the creative process, and the collection are incredible.

    The “collector’s bedroom” is set up with floor-to-ceiling action figures, which is sure to induce some nostalgia. The Star Wars room was, without a doubt, our favorite exhibit. Don’t miss this unique and quirky museum in Oklahoma.

    Best places to eat in Chickasaw Country with kids

    There are plenty of chain restaurants that you would expect in small-town USA in Chickasaw Country. But, there are also lots of great small businesses and independent restaurants to try. From cute “Main Street cafes,” to off-the-beaten-path biker bars, there is a wide range of restaurants to choose from. Each city in Chickasaw Country has great places to eat, and even some hidden gems. Here are just a few of them…

    Ole Reds Tishomingo Oklahoma with kids

    There are several restaurants along the main downtown in Tishomingo. One that’s not to be missed: Ole Red. Blake Shelton’s famous first big hit is the inspiration for this fun restaurant. They have a great menu of home-cooked favorites, including a gluten-free honey butter grilled chicken that’s delicious. Drinks (for both kids and adults) can come in keepsake mason jar glasses. Enjoy some live music, and don’t miss the gift shop and photo op on your way out.

    A campground and BBQ

    Smokin Joe’s Rib Ranch in Davis, Oklahoma is a great place for dinner. There is a large campground onsite, and it’s close to Turner Falls. This BBQ restaurant has delicious pulled chicken, pulled pork, brisket, or sausage. Classic sides include coleslaw, beans, or okra. The meat dinners can be gluten-free if you order them without toast.

    TIP: be sure to look up while you walk in the line to order. There’s a fun piece of decor on the ceiling that will definitely make your kids smile.

    The Artesian Hotel, Casino and Spa in Sulphur, Oklahoma, is a hotel that features a casino, small shops, a coffee shop, and a fine dining restaurant. The Springs at the Artesian is on the main level of the hotel, with a beautiful balcony. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Enjoy a fine dining experience when you visit for dinner. It’s especially beautiful during sunset. An unending supply of rolls is part of the menu; just make sure your kids don’t fill up on them before you eat dinner! They have a kid’s menu. The salmon with wild rice and asparagus is a delicious gluten-free option.

    The Market by Thinkability in Duncan, Oklahoma, is a gift shop and cafe that supports adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. The gift shop has a huge range of home goods and gifts, a healthy grocery market, gourmet foods, and an old-fashioned candy area. Upstairs, the cafe has plenty of seating and features garden fresh menu items like the salad bar, sandwiches, and more. The loaded baked sweet potatoes are a great gluten-free option.

    Fat Bully’s by the Lake is a really fun and casual restaurant in Sulphur, Oklahoma. It’s a beloved biker bar close to Lake of the Arbuckles. The restaurant has a great patio for outdoor dining in nice weather. They also have live music. The menu features favorites like fried cheese curds and all types of burgers. Be sure to check their Facebook page for event updates.

    But, what about the coffee?

    I’m so glad you asked! I would never forget the coffee! Luckily, the Chickasaw Retreat and Conference Center has stocked Keurig coffee makers in the room. But, there are plenty of other cute coffee shops to visit in Chickasaw Country with kids. Here are a few of our favorites that we visited:

    Indiana Dunes consists of 2,182 acres of primitive, beautiful, historic, and unique landscape in Porter County, Indiana. It includes more than three miles of beautiful beach along Lake Michigan’s southern shore.  Large sand dunes, located beyond the entire shoreline, have taken thousands of years to form, and tower nearly 200 feet above Lake Michigan. A wide range of habitats and plant species are found in the park, with vegetation stabilizing some of the sand. These habitats provide homes for many types of plants and animals. The lake also provides a habitat for many aquatic species, as well as a constantly changing fishery.

    The diversity in activities, variety of learning opportunities, and wealth of habitats make Indiana Dunes National Park a great family vacation spot. National Geographic even named it a “Best For Families” park. There are beaches to play on, hiking trails to explore, wetlands for bird watching, and deep history all to experience at the Dunes.

    We recently spent quite a bit of time there exploring everything that was offered, and here are some of our favorite activities from our trip!

    Why explore the Indiana Dunes?

    Midwest hidden gem (one of the only Midwest National Parks)

    Here in the central Midwest, National Parks are few and far between. In fact, Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas don’t have ANY National parks. Indiana was a part of that list as well until Indiana Dunes gained its National Park Status in 2019. Being from Illinois, I had only ever visited one National Park, Gateway Arch National Park in St. Louis, Missouri. This also happens to be Missouri’s only National Park and the smallest National Park out of all of them.

    Indiana Dunes, for many of us in the central Midwest, is the closest National Park to visit. It may not be on the top of your National Park Bucket List, yet, but it was on the top of mine and I can’t wait to convince you why it needs to be added to your list!

    Indiana Dunes National Park ranks 7th in biodiversity out of all of the nation’s national parks, because of the lake and shoreline, and the dunes in the habitats in between the Dunes. There is a myriad of plants and animals that are able to call the Indiana Dunes area home. The types of habitats at the dunes include bogs, rivers, forests, swamp forests, marsh, oak savanna, interdental ponds, foredunes, beaches, and lakefronts.

    All of these different habitats have their own species of animals and plants, making it a great place for birdwatchers and Arbor enthusiasts. Since all of these habitats are so close together, it’s a great place to bring children to learn about all of these different habitats in real life.

    Where are the Indiana Dunes located?

    The Dunes are made up of multiple Indiana Dunes National Park areas, with an Indiana state park nestled in the middle. The dunes area runs along 15 miles of Lake Michigan’s southern shore, from Gary, Indiana to Michigan City, Indiana.  For those looking for a short road trip, the dunes are only a few hours from a lot of major cities (1 hr from Chicago, 2.5 hours from Milwaukee, 3.5 hrs from Detroit, 4 hrs from Louisville, 4 hrs from Cleveland, 5 hrs from St. Louis and 5.5 hrs from Des Moines).

    What are the Indiana Dunes?

    The dunes are large mounds of sand formed by the wind along the shores of Lake Michigan. These dunes provide natural protection against storms, surges, and high waves. They provide a habitat for many plants and animals. Seeing the trees grow out of the sand was one thing we thought was really neat while doing our hiking. And the three tallest dunes, Mount Tom, Mount, Holden, and Mount Jackson, are located within the state park. The most dynamic and moving dune is Mount Baldy, which can “move” up to 4 feet a year.

    What to pack for a trip to the Indiana Dunes

    Clothes

    Being in the Midwest, the Indiana Dunes is open through all 4 seasons. Your clothes will likely reflect the seasons. From our experience visiting in the summer, we packed mostly summer clothes and lots of swimwear! Many of the trails lead to the beach. For convenience, you can hike with your swimwear in your bag, or with your swimwear on!

    You know how kids prefer to hike in Crocs, and usually, it’s not the best option? Well, this location is their place to shine. I wouldn’t bother even bringing tennis shoes. Most of the trails are sand, and obviously, the beaches are as well. I wore hiking sandals, throughout our entire trip, and my kids wore their Crocs. This is the best place for Crocs! The sand can run right out of them before we get back into the car. They were also light enough for me to carry when my kids would ditch them to be barefoot in the sand.

    Food and water

    How much food and water you bring may depend on where you decide to stay, but there are not a lot of places to eat in close proximity to the dunes. So, if you were staying for a couple of days, I would highly recommend packing some food and some water if you can. Especially, if you are hiking with kids, don’t forget to bring some snacks for the trails!

    Indiana Dune National Park vs. State Park

    The Dunes region is made up of both the national park and the state park. The state park is located in the middle. Because both of these parks require an entry fee, it’s best only to visit one park a day to get the most out of your money. You can get a national parks pass online or at the National Park visitor center. You can purchase a private vehicle pass for $25 that will last you seven days.  This pass gives you access to all of the national park, the beaches, and the trails.

    The state park is a one-day pass. For the state park, a one-day pass is $12 for an out-of-state vehicle or $7 entrance fee for an Indiana resident vehicle.

    We spent two days at the national park and one day at the state park. Both parks are definitely worth visiting. Each park has dunes, trails, and beaches. The national park has a visitor center, and the state park has a nature center, both of which are worth visiting!

    Kid-friendly hikes in the Indiana Dunes National Park 

    Hiking in Indiana Dunes National Park is a journey through diverse ecosystems that’s great for both kids and adults. With over 50 miles of trails, there’s a path for every skill level and interest. Families can embark on leisurely strolls along the picturesque shoreline of Lake Michigan or venture into the heart of the park to explore the rugged sand dunes and lush woodlands. The diverse landscape offers opportunities to encounter unique plant and animal species, and the park’s knowledgeable rangers often lead guided hikes, sharing fascinating insights into the park’s ecology and history.

    Due to the shifting of this dune, you are not allowed to climb up the dune, but there are ranger lead daytime and sunset hikes on the Mount Baldy summit trail occasionally. You can find a schedule of all the ranger-led hikes by going to the visitor center or the national park website calendar. The beach trail is not a restricted trail. It is only a 0.36-mile-long trail to the beach. While on the beach, you get a great view of Lake Michigan as well as Mount Baldy.

    Take the “Diana of the Dunes dare” by completing the dunes succession trail. Along the way, you will learn about Diana of the Dunes as you walk in the footsteps of a lady who lived on the dunes in an abandoned shanty for over nine years in the early 1900s. This trail was easier than most because of the stairs and boardwalk. Instead of being all sand, this trail leads up to the top of the dunes and along the beach.

    If you’re looking for a trail that is not sand and is more forested, this is the trail. This trail showcases more of the beautiful habitats in the national park. It’s a great place for birdwatching and seeing wildflowers.

    Kid-Friendly Hikes in the Indiana Dunes State Park 

    3 Dune Challenge

    Are you up for a challenge? The 3 Dune challenge is a combination of Trail 4 and Trail 8, which brings you to the peaks of Mt. Jackson, Mt. Holden, and Mt. Tom. Mount Tom, is the highest dune in both parks at 192 feet above Lake Michigan. While the 3 Dune Challenge is kid-friendly, it’s not necessarily mama with a child carrier on her back-friendly. My kids had no trouble bounding up the sand trails to the top of the peaks. I, on the other hand, with extra weight on my back, really struggled with uphill sand trails. The trails to Mount Jackson, and Mount Holden, are completely sand. The trail to Mount Tom, and down are stairs, which makes the end of the trail much easier.  

    The 3 Dune Challenge starts and ends at the state parks nature center. At the nature center, you can get a sticker signifying you completed the challenge. You can also explore exhibits about dune habitats, wildlife, and the history of Lake Michigan. I definitely recommend doing this trail in the morning or evening when it’s not as hot out.

    Indiana Dunes State Park Beach 

    The Indiana Dunes State Park beach is one of only two beaches that has lifeguards from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Coast Guard-approved life vests are allowed; you can only swim and water up to your armpits. and swimming is only allowed when lifeguards are present. We especially enjoyed this beach because there is a restaurant on site. The Dunes Pavilion Restaurant and Grill was a nice upscale place to eat after a long morning at the beach. They also have a walk-up area where you can get fast food, ice cream, and treats to bring back to the beach.

    The beaches at Indiana Dunes National Park are nothing short of spectacular (even for the Midwest!). Stretching along the southern shore of Lake Michigan (the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore), these pristine sandy shores offer a perfect playground for families visiting the park. With 15 miles of pristine coastline, you’ll find plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the sun and surf.

    What sets these beaches apart is their dramatic backdrop of towering sand dunes, creating a stunning contrast between the azure waters of Lake Michigan and the golden sands. It’s a haven for beachcombing, sunbathing, and building sandcastles with the little ones. Some of the beaches also feature designated swimming areas with lifeguards on duty during the summer months, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for families. 

    There are 8 beaches at Indiana Dunes National Park. We came across West Beach and Porter Beach while hiking. We swam and played at Portage Lakefront, Riverwalk Beach, Central Beach, and Mount Baldy Beach. It should be noted that West Beach is the only NP beach that has a lifeguard on duty.

    This was my favorite beach for swimming and spending the day. There is a large concession stand located at this beach that has great food. I had steak tacos, and the kids had pizza. This beach is only 1 to 2 feet deep for quite a ways out, which made it easier to keep an eye on my kids because I knew that we were not going to be going into deeper water. And because of the marina nearby, there are a lot of boats that come by this beach (which is fun for the kids). The boats are far enough away that they don’t cause waves to come up to the beach, but my kids loved watching all of the big boats go by. The lighthouse is also another great feature on this beach!

    Central Beach

    Central Beach is not far from Mount Baldy Beach, but there are two different parking lots. From the parking lot, you can walk through a nice forest trail to the beach. I don’t know if it’s because of its position on Lake Michigan or because of the tide and weather while we were there, but this beach was loaded with cool rocks and sea glass! Please remember that because this is a national park, you are not allowed to take rocks or sand from any of the beaches. However, sea glass is not a native part of the beach/park; therefore, it’s the ONLY thing you are allowed to take home with you from the beach. 

    Mt.Baldy Beach

    This beach is at the most Northwestern tip of the National Park. There are no changing areas or rinse stations at this beach. During our time at this beach, it was under a red flag warning, which meant no swimming or getting in the water because of large waves and riptides. Nonetheless, it was beautiful to sit on the beach and watch those huge waves and play in the sand!

    Indiana Beach State Park Beach and West Beach are the only two beaches with my lifeguards. Make sure you check beach conditions before you go on the National Park or state park website to make sure you are allowed to swim, and be sure to check to see that there are no red flag warnings. These beaches can get very busy during the summer, so try going on a weekday when there are fewer crowds so that you are better able to see children. Depending on your children’s age, make sure you have a talk with them before you go to the beach about only going into a certain depth to maintain safety.

    Things to do in Indiana Dunes National park beyond the beaches and trails 

    Education centers

    Beyond the beaches and the trails, you can visit the nature center at the state park, the visitor center at the National Park, and the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education in the National Park. Of these three, the Center for Environmental Education has the most kid-friendly hands-on activities.

    World’s Fair Century of Progress Homes

    I also recommend that you take a drive!  Each evening, we had fun driving along Beverly Shores’ Lakefront Drive. We loved watching the sunset over Lake Michigan as well as seeing all the different beautiful lake houses. Some of those houses include the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair Century of Progress Homes. You can walk past these homes and read about their history, or once a year, there are ranger-led tours of the first floor of the houses. We especially loved the pink “Florida Tropical” house. The other houses include the Rostone House, the Cypress Log House, the House Of Tomorrow, and the Armco-Ferro House. 

    Chellberg Farm

    If you’re interested in history, Chellberg Farm (sometimes also referred to as Anders Kjellberg Farm), is a historic farmstead of Swedish immigrants that became part of Indiana Dunes National Park in 1972. Chellberg Farm represents the ethnic heritage of a nearly forgotten Swedish-American settlement in the area. The farm includes a family home, a water house with a windmill, a chicken coop/bunkhouse, and the original barn. Other nearby Swedish landmarks have been restored or preserved, including the Burstrom Chapel and the Burstrom Cemetery.

    Like all United States National Parks, the National Park Service offers a Junior Ranger badge for visitors. The Junior Ranger Activity Guidebook can be picked up at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center or the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education. When you complete the Junior Ranger Activity Guide, bring it back to the Visitor Center or Paul H. Douglas Center to receive a Junior Ranger badge. 

    In addition to the larger Junior Ranger Activity Guide, Indiana Dunes has a Beachcomber Activity Sheet for families enjoying the beach for the day. You can pick up a Beachcomber activity sheet the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center or Paul H. Douglas Center.

    Where to stay in Indiana Dunes National Park

    Unfortunately, there are not a lot of family-friendly (yet affordable) places to stay within walking distance of the Indiana Dunes National Park (or the state park). If you want to be close by without doing too much driving, your best bet is to stay at one of the campgrounds. Campgrounds in both parks have RV and tent camping. If camping isn’t your thing, we stayed at Al & Sally’s Motel, which is not far at all from Central Beach and Mount Baldy and no more than what we needed as we were rarely there.

    You can also find some other historic places on the Indiana Dunes tourism page. Keep in mind if you get a hotel in one of the nearby towns in the near future, you may run into traffic as there was widespread roadwork and lots of construction being done while we were visiting!

    Camping in Indiana Dunes National Park

    Indiana Dunes National Park offers a range of camping options that allow families to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area. The park features two main campgrounds: Dunewood Campground and the more rustic Dunewood Youth Group Campground. Dunewood Campground provides a family-friendly environment with well-maintained facilities, including restrooms, showers, and picnic areas. It’s an excellent choice for those looking to strike a balance between modern amenities and the tranquility of the outdoors. The campground consists of two loops containing 66 campsites (53 conventional drive-in sites and 13 walk/carry-in sites). Four sites are wheelchair accessible. The campground is closed during winter (November 2 – March 31).

    If you’re seeking a slightly different camping experience, Indiana Dunes State Park offers its own unique charm. The state park boasts two family campgrounds: the Indiana Dunes State Park Campground and the more primitive Wilson Shelter Campground. The State Park campground provides all the amenities a family needs for a comfortable stay, from electric hookups to modern restrooms and showers. Located less than a mile from the beach and within walking distance of the South Shore Rail Station, this campground is one of the most popular in the area and fills up quickly, so be sure to make your reservations as soon as possible. Every site has full electrical hookups, with modern restrooms and shower houses available to every camper.

    Eats and treats 

    We loved visiting the State Park Beach and the Portage and River Walk Beach because they both had good food. If you travel with kids, you know that having easy, inaccessible food is of the utmost importance. Other than these two areas, you may have to drive a little way to get local food and drive even further into one of the nearby towns to find a chain restaurant or grocery store.

    Because of the road construction going on while we were there, and likely going on for a while, driving into the nearby towns, wasn’t the best option to get food. We mostly packed food for breakfast and ate lunch or dinner at the beach concession area/restaurants.

    We did venture into the nearby town of Portage for some ice cream at Super Scoops. They had generous portions of ice cream in tons of flavors, and they are half-price happy hour on weekdays from 2 to 4 pm. We just happened to go in during that time, and we’re pleasantly surprised to get ice cream for all four of us for $7!!

    Best time to visit Indiana Dunes National Park

    The best time of year to visit Indiana Dunes National Park with kids is undoubtedly during the warm and sunny months of late spring, summer, and early fall. These months, typically from May through September, offer the most ideal conditions for a family adventure in this beautiful park. During this period, the weather is generally pleasant, with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine, making it perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, beachcombing, picnicking, and exploring the dunes.

    In the summer, the kids can splash in Lake Michigan’s waters, play in the sand, and enjoy the many educational programs and ranger-led activities offered, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the park’s unique ecosystem. At this time, the park is in full bloom, with vibrant wildflowers adding to the park’s natural beauty, providing an inspiring backdrop for family photos and memories that will last a lifetime.

    Additionally, the summer months are when Indiana Dunes National Park offers full services and amenities (restaurants, shops, concession stands, camping, etc.).

You just need a refresher and some inspiration! Outdoor games and activities are a great opportunity for teens to take breaks from their screens, get social, exercise, and have fun. The best outdoor activities for teens are the ones that combine fun, friends, and fresh air! 

    The best way to encourage teens and tweens to get outside for some fresh air and fun is to ensure there is a lot of peer community. Contrary to popular belief, older kids need and want to play. I believe it’s important to give teens and tweens an outdoor outlet to play and connect with each other. And yes, the competition might be leveled up as the kids get older, but that’s all part of the fun for them.

    The benefits of outdoor play for kids (teens and tweens included) are boundless, ranging from physical health to mental well-being and personal development. If you don’t have any courses near you, teens and tweens will often make their own course through the neighborhoods. Local parks are also a good space to set up a homemade course.

    Putt putt golf

    For very little cost, teens and tweens can meet up together to play a little putt-putt together. Putt-putt golf, a miniature version of traditional golf, is a classic outdoor game that provides an engaging outdoor experience with its colorful courses and quirky obstacles. Teens can challenge their friends or family while developing focus and patience. This fun activity not only encourages friendly competition but also improves concentration and spatial awareness. This is also a great outdoor activity while traveling!

    Pickleball

    This fast-paced sport, most well-known for a more mature crowd, has taken the teen world by storm. Pickleball, a hybrid of tennis and table tennis, is played on a smaller court with a lightweight paddle and a wiffle ball. It’s perfect for teens looking for a fun and fast-paced outdoor activity that promotes agility, teamwork, and cardiovascular fitness. The relatively low learning curve allows beginners to quickly get into the game and enjoy the benefits of active play.

    Parks and recreation facilities are quickly adapting their tennis courts, and pop-up pickleball clubs are all the rage. Rent paddles or buy your own.

    Both tennis and golf are sports that are great for a group as small as two. Actually, golf can be played solo and well into the late decades of your life, making it a great sport to start young. Teens will definitely get their steps in and make memories playing.

    Kickball

    Kickball, reminiscent of childhood playground games, is an excellent choice for teens (and kids of all ages). It’s a fun game that encourages them to run, kick, and strategize as a team. The benefits include increased physical fitness, improved coordination, and opportunities for social bonding. It’s a great game that can be played in parks, schoolyards, or any open space, making it accessible and convenient. Kickball is a classic game and great for involving teens and tweens because it just doesn’t get too serious, and everyone can have fun.

    Big group games and activities

    Teens and tweens can have so much fun by engaging in big group games and activities outdoors. These large-scale gatherings create an atmosphere of excitement, camaraderie, and friendly competition that’s hard to replicate indoors. I often think about the field day activities that little kids have so much fun with and what a good time those were. This is similar, but maybe just up a notch for the older kids. They have a little more freedom and a little more self control, but at the same time the wild draws them in more.

    These types of activities can transform an ordinary day into an unforgettable adventure. The sheer scale of these activities fosters a sense of community, encouraging teens to bond with their peers, make new friends, and build lasting memories together. The laughter, energy, and shared moments create a sense of togetherness that’s both invigorating and deeply satisfying.

    Moreover, big group activities outdoors offer a unique chance for teens and tweens to develop essential life skills. They learn teamwork, communication, and problem-solving as they strategize with their peers to achieve common goals. These games also promote physical fitness, as running, jumping, and competing in large group settings provide an excellent workout.

    Glow stick tag

    If your teens find themselves bored or restless after the sun goes down, this game of tag is a way for them to extend their outside time. Better to play with a glow stick than the glow of a screen! Glow Stick Tag is a variation of the classic game of tag, but played in the dark with glow sticks. Teens experience the thrill of pursuit and evasion while enhancing their agility and reflexes. This outdoor game for teens is perfect for summer evenings and encourages outdoor play well into the night.

    Capture the Flag

    Capture the Flag is another classic game involving strategy, teamwork, and a bit of stealth as teams work to capture the opposing team’s flag while defending their own. Played in wide open spaces, this game encourages teens to explore outdoor settings, develop communication skills, and engage in friendly competition. Benefits include improved physical fitness, enhanced problem-solving abilities, and the cultivation of a strong sense of camaraderie among participants. There are all kinds of versions the game that the group can adapt and make work for older kids, younger kids, and even adults (if they’ll let you play!). This is great for maximum physical activity with fun.

    There’s also a glow-in-the-dark version of this game that can be played outdoors at night, making it extra fun and keeping teens outside into the evening hours. 

    Ultimate Frisbee

    Ultimate Frisbee combines the athleticism of soccer, football, and basketball with the joy of throwing a frisbee. Played on a field, this game promotes cardiovascular fitness, teamwork, and strategic thinking. Teens improve their coordination, communication, and agility while relishing the exhilaration of a fast-paced outdoor sport. This one will require a big, open space, so consider a local school field or park with lots of room to run. My youngest loves to gather his buddies on a rainy day and play this at our local park for maximum laughs and a reason to get as dirty as possible. Bring towels and a change of clothes!

    Outdoor scavenger hunt

    Outdoor scavenger hunts (or treasure hunts) are fantastic for unleashing the inner child and explorer in teens. Armed with a list of items to find or clues to decipher, they venture into nature or urban environments, promoting an appreciation for the world around them. These hunts enhance observational skills, boost curiosity, and provide educational opportunities about the environment and local history.

    Teen group activities are great, but if it’s a huge group, sometimes breaking into smaller groups helps the quieter ones. You can find online resources to make clues and/or ridiculous lists of treasures to find. A fun variation of this to make it a photo scavenger hunt or use the Goosechase app to create the scavenger hunt. Teens and tweens can use their phones, so it’s kind of a win-win for everyone.

    Manhunt

    Manhunt, a modern twist on hide-and-seek, is an exhilarating outdoor game where one person hides (or one team hides), and the other team members seek to find them. Teens experience the excitement of exploration and strategy as they work together to outwit their pursuers. It’s like hide & seek in reverse, and awesome for larger groups (and any age group). Manhunt fosters creativity, adaptability, and quick thinking, all while getting teens to move, run, and explore the great outdoors. End of the game is when all players have been found. It can be adapted for teens who are driving or can be done on a large property for high-level fun.

    Water games and activities

    Teens and tweens will take any chance to play around water. There is no better way to motivate my teenagers to get outside than to just add water! Because of the summer heat where we live, sometimes water activities are the only way to get my teens outside. Use whatever water you can get your hands on. Hoses, sprinklers, pools, natural waterways, whatever works! For instance, water balloons, add a refreshing twist to classic games like tag or dodgeball. The splashes and giggles that ensue create unforgettable moments, while also providing a much-needed respite from the heat during hot summer days (bonus points if you add ice cream to the mix after the game).

    Activities like slip ‘n’ slides turn any ordinary backyard into a water park, allowing teens to slide and glide to their heart’s content. These games not only offer a great workout but also inspire creativity as teens invent new ways to make a splash and keep the fun flowing.

    Pool basketball and pool (or beach) volleyball

    Pool basketball and pool volleyball transform a typical backyard pool into a vibrant arena of aquatic competition. These games encourage teens to engage in friendly matches, improving their coordination and teamwork as they chase after the ball. Beyond the physical benefits, these activities offer a refreshing escape from the summer heat, promoting a sense of well-being and relaxation.

    Both of these games are great for small groups, big groups, or even just one-on-one hours of fun in the sun…or rain, as my kids would have it! They’re a great way to get everybody involved. If you have too many to fit in the pool, do a rotation to make sure you’re being inclusive to all. We like this 4-way volleyball set that can also be adjusted down for badminton. 

    Mass water balloon fight

    Water balloon fights are a lighthearted way to bring large groups of teens together for a wet and wild adventure. These battles not only foster social interaction and laughter but also promote strategic thinking as participants aim to soak their opponents while staying dry themselves. The spontaneity of water balloon fights creates unforgettable memories and strengthens bonds among friends.

    You can play something like this with any number of players. If you have a big group you can set this up as a dodgeball-type competition, or if you have a smaller group, then perhaps an egg toss-type event. Even a combo of Capture the flag with water balloons could work and be a fun way to mix it up. You could also do something similar with Nerf guns or water cannons. The idea is to get everyone outside and having fun.

    Giant slip ‘n slide

    Turn any grassy slope into a thrilling water park. Teens can slide and race, mastering the art of balance and speed. These slippery adventures provide a full-body workout while keeping everyone cool and entertained on hot summer days. For this to work well, it needs to be a rainy day, or you need access to running water. Either way, your teens and tweens will have some war wounds they can brag about. I’ve seen these set up to land in a lake or a pool. I highly suggest using something as a trial run to make sure no one gets seriously injured.

    Tubing, water skiing & wakeboarding

    Tubing, skiing, and wakeboarding introduce teens to the exhilaration of water sports. Whether gliding behind a boat on an inflatable tube, skiing across the surface, or riding the waves on a wakeboard, these activities promote physical fitness, balance, and coordination. Add a little speed on the water really gets the teens goin’ and keeps them outside for hours with some healthy risk-taking. They also foster a deep connection with natural bodies of water, encouraging teens to appreciate and protect these environments.

    Backyard games for teens and tweens (or at the beach)

    Whether it’s a game of cornhole in the backyard or a round of spikeball on the beach, these fun activities create opportunities for physical activity and social interaction. Backyard games offer a casual yet competitive setting where teens can bond with friends or family while honing their hand-eye coordination and aiming skills. What’s particularly wonderful about these outdoor games is their adaptability to different skill levels, making them accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

    Backyard (or beach) games encourage teens and tweens to unplug and immerse themselves in the sensory delights of the outdoors, from the feeling of sand between their toes to the warmth of the sun on their skin. These activities not only provide a well-rounded workout but also offer countless opportunities for laughter, camaraderie, and spontaneous moments of creativity as teens build, chase, and compete in the beauty of the backyard or along the shoreline. 

    Spikeball

    The ultimate yard and beach game is set up for a 4 player game. Spikeball is a dynamic and fast-paced game that combines elements of volleyball and four-square. Played on the grass or sand, it demands quick reflexes, teamwork, and strategic ball control. It’s an excellent way for teens to engage in an action-packed outdoor sport that keeps them on their toes. If you have multiple nets, you can set up a tournament or just keep it small with a few friends. I see teens carrying this game in their cars so they have it at all times when the opportunity arises.

    Cornhole

    Cornhole, the classic bean bag toss game, offers a perfect blend of leisure and competition. Teens can gather in teams, honing their tossing skills while enjoying spirited matches. Beyond the fun, cornhole fosters precision, focus, and friendly rivalry among players. This easygoing game is great for all ages and allows for a lot of peer interaction. For tweens, this can be a good activity to get the conversation rolling without too much awkwardness. 

    Horseshoes

    Horseshoes is a classic yard game great for family events! This game combines skill, precision, and friendly competition. Played with the simple goal of tossing a horseshoe to encircle a stake in the ground, it requires a keen eye, a steady hand, and strategic judgment. Horseshoes is not only a great way for teens to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine but also an opportunity to bond with friends and family in a relaxed and social setting. Whether played casually at a backyard barbecue or in a more competitive tournament format, horseshoes provide a perfect blend of leisure and challenge, making it a timeless favorite that connects generations and fosters good-natured rivalry.

    Bocce ball

    Bocce ball is a simple yet strategic game that encourages teens to engage in precise throws and tactical thinking. Played on a grassy surface, it promotes gentle physical activity and can be enjoyed in a relaxed or competitive setting.

    Obstacle course

    A great way to get teens and tweens involved is to have them develop an obstacle course. Obstacle courses are versatile and adaptable outdoor activities that allow teens to construct challenges from everyday objects or purchased equipment. Building and navigating these courses enhances problem-solving abilities, creativity, and physical fitness. There are so many different way to adapt this idea for kids of any age. Teens can design their own courses and compete for the fastest time, fostering a sense of accomplishment. Help them brainstorm creative ideas to use items you have around the house. Invite the neighborhood friends and find a way to make it a fun competition. 

    Shoot hoops

    Shooting hoops is a timeless activity that encourages teens to practice their basketball skills, improve hand-eye coordination, and engage in friendly competitions with friends. Whether they’re aiming for a casual game of H.O.R.S.E. or a more serious one-on-one showdown, shooting hoops is a fantastic way to stay active and develop athletic prowess.

    Ladder golf

    Ladder golf combines strategy and precision as teens aim to toss bolas onto a ladder-like structure. This game promotes balance, accuracy, and the joy of aiming for a challenging target. Ladder Golf is an ideal choice for socializing and refining coordination skills.

    Slackline

    Slacklining involves balancing on a narrow, flexible strap suspended between two anchor points. It challenges teens’ core strength, concentration, and balance. Slacklining offers not only a unique physical workout but also a sense of accomplishment as teens progress from wobbly steps to confident walks on the line.

    Other outdoor activities

    There are other things to consider as a way to get your teens and tweens off screens and outside more. Plan a field trip day for big fun. Make a plan and invite friends. Or engage in some everyday outdoor fun like biking, fishing, or hiking.

    Water park

    Make reservations or buy tickets to a nearby water park. This is a great way to spend all day long outside in the hot summer temperatures. Most places allow you to pack your own picnic lunch and provide facilities to shower or change clothes. 

    Theme park/amusement park

    These may not seem like outdoor activities, but your teens and tweens will get in lots of steps on a day exploring. Even the waiting in lines keeps them outside and off screens for the day!

    Zoos and aquariums

    A trip to the zoo or aquarium can be both entertaining and educational. Teens can learn about various animal species, conservation efforts, and even participate in behind-the-scenes tours and interactive exhibits.

    Historical sites and museums

    Teens interested in history can enjoy visiting historical landmarks, battlefields, or museums dedicated to art, science, or culture. These trips provide valuable learning experiences while keeping them engaged offline.

    Outdoor adventure parks

    Adventure parks with activities like zip-lining, ropes courses, and rock climbing can satisfy the thrill-seeker in teens and tweens. These parks often offer age-appropriate challenges that promote physical fitness and confidence.

    Botanical gardens

    Strolling through beautiful gardens filled with exotic plants and vibrant flowers can be a serene and visually stimulating experience. Some botanical gardens even host seasonal events and workshops.

Green spaces, such as parks and forests, can calm a child’s mind, help them focus, and reduce their anxiety. But, just as beneficial in other ways are the lesser talked about “blue spaces.” Today, marine biologist, photographer, writer, and South Florida mom of two, Bethany Augliere, sheds light on the powerful benefits of spending time near and around water, called Blue Hours. We will delve into the transformative magic of water, exploring why it is essential for our well-being, and how embracing the beauty of “Blue Hours” can lead to a richer, more fulfilling life.     Our attraction to water

    Humans have an innate and profound attraction to water, and this connection is deeply rooted in our evolutionary history and our basic biological needs. Water comprises about 70% of the human body. Water covers more than 70% of Earth. Humans spend the first 9 months of our existence in a watery womb. We require water for various physiological functions, including digestion, circulation, temperature regulation, and waste elimination.

    Our attraction to water may be instinctual, as our ancestors needed to locate and consume freshwater sources to survive. But water also provides a natural playground for humans. From swimming in oceans and lakes to kayaking down rivers or simply relaxing on a beach, water offers a wide range of recreational activities, as well as natural therapy for stress relief. 

    Many of us have heard that green space, or time in nature, benefits the body and mind, especially to combat all our time behind screens and inside under fluorescent lights. Less attention has, though, been paid to blue spaces —  areas around rivers, lakes, oceans, and ponds. Recognizing the importance of water and “blue spaces” in our lives can lead to a deeper appreciation of its value and the need to protect and preserve this precious resource for future generations.

    Ocean memories

    Childhood is a time of wonder and exploration, a period when the world’s mysteries are unveiled through the lens of innocence and curiosity. For many of us, some of the most cherished and enduring memories of our early years are those spent in those blue spaces near water. These experiences aren’t just fleeting moments in our past; they lay the foundation for a lifelong connection with nature. The time we spend as children near water not only forms indelible memories but also fosters a profound bond with these environments that can shape our relationship with the natural world throughout our lives. 

    Some of my best memories involve water, from my childhood to just this past summer. When I was growing up, the water was like a second home. My dad’s parents lived on a lake in northern Virginia, and my mom’s parents lived five minutes from the beach in Long Island, New York. I spent my childhood learning how to bodysurf and boogie board with my grandma, cousins, and friends. We often got tossed in waves, emerging from the water with sand burns on our legs. In the winter, we took family trips down to the Florida Keys. I loved snorkeling in the tranquil waters, scuba diving on coral reefs, and kayaking in mangroves. I have fond memories of searching for hermit crabs with my little brother at the shore’s edge.

    Blue space and mental health 

    Today, Western countries are experiencing a rise in mental health issues, including social anxiety, especially among young people, which is linked to increasing social media use and academic and social pressures. Among all disease groups worldwide, mental disorders are the leading cause of years lived with a disability. We all have stress, but how can we better cope with that stress?

    Get outside and see some blue!

    Blue Mind Theory

    The Blue Mind theory, popularized by marine biologist and neuroscientist Wallace J. Nichols, Ph.D., is the mildly meditative state people fall into when they are near, in, under, or on water. This theory posits that spending time near or around water (be it oceans, lakes, or rivers), triggers a neurological and psychological response that promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and enhances overall well-being. By immersing ourselves in the sights and sounds of blue spaces, we tap into a deep-seated connection with water that calms our mental state, encourages creativity, inspires reflection, and fosters a sense of interconnectedness with the natural world. 

    Blue spaces vs. green spaces

    Spending time in both green spaces (parks, forests, meadows), and blue spaces (near water) can offer a range of benefits to physical and mental well-being, yet they provide distinct experiences due to their unique characteristics. The key difference between green and blue spaces lies in their sensory experiences. Green spaces provide a predominantly visual and olfactory experience, with lush landscapes and the smell of vegetation. In contrast, blue spaces engage multiple senses, including visual, auditory, and tactile sensations. The sound of water and the feeling of coolness in the air or on the skin contribute to a more holistic sensory experience.

    The presence of water has an inherently calming effect on the human mind. The benefits of spending time in blue spaces come from 4 main ways: physical activity, stress reduction, providing a space for socialization, and the environmental factors that impact health. Experts have found that spending time in blue space lowers the risk of stress, anxiety, obesity, heart disease, and even premature death.

    Some scientists claim that bodies of water can unlock problem-solving and creativity and that water’s color, sound, and feel can lower pulse rates. Water’s ever-changing patterns and reflections often inspire creativity and introspection, making it a source of artistic inspiration and personal insight.

    The rhythmic sounds of waves, the reflection of the sky on the water’s surface, and the cool breeze all contribute to a sense of serenity. Blue spaces are associated with improved mood and increased feelings of happiness and relaxation. Being near water can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

    Like green spaces, blue spaces also offer opportunities for physical activity, such as swimming, kayaking, or boating. These activities promote physical fitness and mental well-being. Swimming, hiking, exploring, enjoying the company of friends, soaking up vitamin D, it all happens when exploring blue spaces. Many people report feeling a profound connection with nature when near water, which can foster a sense of interconnectedness and environmental stewardship.

    Benefits of blue spaces for kids

    A recent study reveals that recreational exposure to blue space as a child can have a major impact on a person’s adult mental health and can encourage them to maintain a healthy relationship with nature into adulthood. In the study, respondents shared their experiences with blue space during childhood, including how frequently they visited it and how comfortable their parents were allowing them to be in and near water. In a nutshell, more blue space exposure as a child results in better adult mental health and a greater propensity to spend recreational time in nature as an adult.

    And not only that, but adults who had familiarity and confidence around coasts, rivers, and lakes, were more likely to spend recreational time in nature during adulthood, leading to continued benefits. 

    Spending time recreating in blue spaces can also help with your child’s social skills and behavior. Another study found that higher beach attendance each year during childhood was associated with decreased total difficulties and peer relationship problems and increased pro-social behavior.

    Turning a love of water into a career

    While you won’t find this in the study, to me, there’s no question that spending so much time in and around water as a child made a profound impact on who I became and sparked a curiosity that turned a passion into a career.  I whole-heartedly believe that being in and around the water is good for my mind and body, and I feel lucky I had the exposure I did to lakes and oceans as a kid. I truly feel that’s where my love for the water began and shaped the person that I am now. 

    As a young adult, I spent a decade studying wild dolphins in the Bahamas to film and photograph their underwater behavior as a marine biologist with the Wild Dolphin Project. I loved the water so much that I learned the art of freediving — holding your breath while diving until resurfacing. Descending beneath the surface with nothing but the air in my lungs is a sense of peace I often cannot find on land. My time underwater has brought me eye-to-eye with tiger sharks, great hammerheads, dolphins, manta rays, whale sharks, moray eels, sea horses, sea turtles, and countless other fascinating creatures. 

    Fear of what lies beneath

    While I have always loved water and have loved discovering what the open ocean holds, water can illicit fear and anxiety for some people. What’s lurking beneath the surface that I cannot see? Will I get bitten by a shark? The good thing is that countless ways exist to enjoy and benefit from blue spaces. You don’t even have to get wet if you don’t want to.

    For those who harbor a fear of open water and the mysteries it may hold beneath its surface, the benefits of blue spaces are still accessible and transformative without ever having to take the plunge. The simple act of being in blue spaces (near water), can offer a profound sense of calm and connection. The soothing sounds, the refreshing breeze, and the visual serenity of the water’s expanse can instill a deep sense of peace and tranquility. These moments allow one to breathe in the therapeutic essence of blue spaces, nurturing mental well-being, reducing stress, and providing a valuable opportunity to reflect and recharge while maintaining a comfortable distance from the depths that may elicit fear. In this way, the healing power of water remains fully accessible, catering to individuals with varying comfort levels, ensuring that everyone can experience the restorative embrace of nature’s watery wonders.

    Ways to start exploring blue spaces

    Blue space, which encompasses the sea and coastline, rivers, lakes, canals, waterfalls, and even fountains, has been used therapeutically for years. Whether you are already an outdoorsy family looking for new adventures or simply want to find yourself in more blue space, here are some ways you can incorporate water into your life.  

    Keep it simple

    If spending time in lakes or oceans is outside your comfort zone, then start small. Take a walk along a lake or stream, or sit on your patio and watch the rain. Take your little ones to jump in a puddle and watch the water splash or search for salamanders in a small creek. The point is to be intentional with your mind and time. Searching for places to explore water can often lead to finding cool new areas in general that you might not have otherwise found.

    Try something new

    If you are feeling adventurous, try a new (to you) activity on the water, like stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, or tubing down a river. We started bringing a boogie board and skim board to the beach for my 4-year-old just so he could start getting comfortable with them. (We get most of our sports equipment second-hand from thrift shops or friends, especially when we are just starting to try stuff out). 

    Snorkeling

    Most people think you can only snorkel on tropical vacations to Hawaii or the Caribbean, but I often bring my mask and snorkel to lakes and rivers to see what I can find. This summer, I found a newt while snorkeling in a lake in Oregon. In prior years I’ve found giant snapping turtles, American eels, and landlocked salmon in the lakes of Maine or river otters and snakes in the freshwater springs of Florida, in addition to manatees. So, put on a mask and dip your head beneath the surface; you’ll never know what you are going to find.

    Let them lead

    It can be tempting to want to push your kid into trying something new or something that you love. But pushing them is rarely an effective method and can often backfire. Let them lead and take it slow. When I was teaching my then three-year-old to snorkel, I’d take him to a calm lagoon area, let him stay where he could stand, and just dip his head under with goggles to look for critters. Finding calm, clear water is one of the best ways to start building confidence when swimming in lakes or the ocean.

    In Florida, if it’s windy and choppy at the beach, we often take the kids to little spots on the Intracoastal, an inland waterway system made up of natural inlets, saltwater rivers, bays, sounds, and man-made canals. It’s more protected than the beach, which means the water is much calmer and without waves. 

    Bring friends

    Nature is a great place to reconnect with friends and socialize. Adventure friends, shared joy, and positive peer influence can help us and our kids expand our horizons and potentially try new things we might not otherwise try. And parents might also feel more comfortable trying new things with more experienced parents nearby. I love being that positive influence, helping other families feel a bit more comfortable in the ocean if they are with us.

    100 Blue Hours movement

    My passion is to help others enjoy the water for their own mental and physical well-being. Ultimately, I also hope this inspires people to care about these vital ecosystems and take positive action toward the environment, whether it’s recycling more, shopping second-hand, minimizing single-use plastics, participating in beach cleanups or learning about a local endangered species.

    For this reason, I co-founded the 100 Blue Hours movement along with Brittini Arlene, a fellow marine biologist and water-loving mom.

    The mission: spend 100 hours in or around the water in one year. This averages to about 2 hours a week.

    The movement underscores the importance of reconnecting kids with the natural world. Spending quality time in blue spaces fosters a deep and lasting connection between children and the environment. These experiences instill a sense of wonder, respect, and appreciation for the natural world, encouraging future generations to become stewards of the environment. After all, “in the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand,” said Baba Dioum.

    Why 100 blue hours in a year?

    The goal of spending 100 hours in blue spaces over the course of a year is significant for several reasons, but it is also achievable, striking a balance between setting a meaningful target and ensuring it’s realistic for most families:

    100 hours represent a substantial amount of time spent in nature, which can lead to tangible physical and mental health benefits for children and adults alike. Regular exposure to blue spaces can reduce stress, boost mood, and promote overall well-being.  Setting a specific goal of 100 hours encourages families to consciously prioritize outdoor activities in blue spaces. This intentionality can lead to positive behavioral changes, such as reducing screen time and increasing physical activity.

    One hundred hours spread across 365 days provides flexibility for families to plan outings at their own pace. It allows for a variety of short and long visits, accommodating busy schedules and different seasons. 100 hours over a year adds up to meaningful and cumulative experiences. Over time, these experiences can shape a child’s perspective, fostering a deep and lasting connection with the natural world.

    We also think the goal of 100 hours over a year is attainable for families of varying backgrounds and access to blue spaces. It doesn’t require expensive vacations or extensive travel. It doesn’t require you to homeschool or forgo other meaningful activities. Many communities have accessible local water bodies, parks, or green spaces where families can spend quality time. While it encourages regular outdoor time, the 100-hour target is not overly demanding. It allows families to enjoy the process without feeling pressured to meet strict quotas, making the experience enjoyable and sustainable.
